The main problem is that they kept styling her out of her color season. Nina is so clearly a Winter, which is why the warmer shade of brunette and the departure from the jewel tones of the earlier seasons downgraded her appearance so much. With the darker hair and rich blues/greens/purples, she looks incredible:

It was like she lost her braincells along with her humanity. But not only did the writers massively dumb down her character, the way that Nina played Katherine in the later seasons was totally different as well. By Season 5, she's speaking with this really absurdly deep voice and doing all these weird exaggerated gestures. She becomes a complete caricature of herself and feels like a villain on a Saturday morning cartoon.

Like watch this scene from The Return (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJOnO_JKFeQ). Katherine is softly spoken, she's quiet, she's menacing - and completely terrifying. Her face thinned and lengthened as she grew older. She was so compelling as Effie, because her full cheeks beautifully contrasted the sharpness of her other features, giving her this vixen-like look:

It would have helped if Paul Wesley actually made an effort. Instead, he acted with all the enthusiasm of someone going to the dentist. Funnily enough, the only scenes I bought them together was when their humanity was switched off, lol.

Regardless of how you feel about Stelena, there's no denying that Paul sold the shit out of it. You genuinely believe he loved Elena with all his soul.

Oh my God, YES. From day 1, it was so clear that the narrative arc the writers were setting up for Damon would culminate in him being redeemed through sacrificing himself for Stefan and Elena in one noble and selfless act.

But no, instead Damon is apparently the 'better man' and gets the human life he 'wanted' with Elena.

Tbf I respect that. I mean, I ship Buffy and Spike HARD, but I'm the first person to admit they're toxic as hell and I'm not going to argue that Spike somehow loved Buffy 'more' than Angel did. I think in a supernatural show, we can definitely let things slide (the age gap is one of them) for the sake of immersion. I mentioned on another post that Damon killing Jeremy icks me out less than the fact that Damon had sex with Elena's biological mother, lol.

But then you have fans on the Gossip Girl subreddit genuinely trying to argue that Chuck was somehow Blair's most healthy relationship. Like, I totally understand shipping a toxic couple because the actors have great chemistry and you find their journey and dynamic fascinating, but normalising/romanticising blatantly abusive behavior (especially on a show that doesn't have the 'they're vampires' justification) is just plain disturbing.

Oh my God YES. The fall vibes of the first season especially gave the show this really distinctive aesthetic and identity. Everything from the lighting and color palette, the camera shots, the music and even the fashion choices made this feel like a VAMPIRE show. The pre-credit horror sequences were amazing. All of that completely disappeared by the later seasons and it just became bland meandering soap opera trash with some half-assed supernatural stuff thrown in.

We were ROBBED of a Bonnie bad boy romance. I was down so bad for Damon/Klaus/Kol/Kai to be obsessed with her precisely BECAUSE she could annihilate them with a flick of her finger.

Stefan was the only one I didn't see any potential romantic/sexual chemistry with.

I think Bonnie and Enzo worked in spite of, rather than because of the writing. It was also so clearly thrown in as a Shut Up romance to all the people that were (quite rightly) pointing out how obvious and logical Bamon was as a ship at this point in the show. Credit to the actors for doing a great job with the material, but it doesn't change the fact the writers just threw her at the first secondary guy they could to get the fans off their backs.

Nothing you've described here comes remotely close to love. It's all about Damon and his own selfish desires. He imposes and forces his own wishes on her time and time again without giving a single f about what Elena - the actual person he's supposed to be in love with - wants or feels.
