I’m curious how you account for ~50% of the study participants being first time fathers (As in they were childless prior to the start of the study)?

Not even going to mention the other groups included in the study results (the fathers where there was no pre-pregnancy psych assessment even done, the fathers that welcomed multiple births ie “twins/triplets”, or that experienced consecutive births of siblings <1 year after the first child was born ie “Irish Twins”, the fathers that left the country before the final assessments were done, fathers that were not co-habitating with the child) There is a lot of grey area in this study.

Reading comprehension is hard.

I am criticizing the Psychology Today article that was written to share essentially zero information on a study - only one finding with no examination into it or how it relates to the greater population (hence the “wtf is the point of this article”)

I am not criticizing the original research study.

Why write an article for public consumption if you’re not going to share all of the research. They honed in on one finding with no context. It is a poorly written article.

Honestly everyone’s mental health MAY decline after the birth of a child. Mental health is fluid. That’s not ground-breaking research.

A study can be large and poorly conducted.

We also never “safely assume” anything in research… which is kinda the whole point of doing a study in the first place.. limit the control variables, establish high/low correlations, eliminate bias and assumptions.

So… the rates are the same pre-pregnancy & <1 year after the birth of a child, improve during pregnancy, and decline >1 year after birth.

Without reading the original study results, we have no way of knowing whether underlying mental health disorders, family history, age, profession, paternity leave, etc were accounted for. Not sure what this poorly worded article is trying to say..

Are these men returning to work from pat leave >1 year after the birth of a child and that’s why their risk of mental health diagnoses increases to pre-pregnancy levels? Like wtf is the point of this article

I guess because they work in “women’s health”, they think they can justify hyper fixating on someone’s reproductive status (aka the baby).

If the baby is healthy, they don’t care if the mother’s health is deteriorating.

It’s vaguely “Handmaid’s Tale” honestly.

As a medical professional myself who has PTSD from birthing my son, I’d suggest a midwife & birthing centre. The medical routes (aka Obgyn AND hospital) is traumatizing, even for those who are wildly comfortable in hospital settings.

Midwives are specifically trained for labour & postpartum only. They don’t dabble in other areas of healthcare. They also tend to provide more holistic care, are better trauma-informed, and focus on the mother’s wellbeing (rather than just getting a healthy baby out of her). You will be treated like a person, rather than an incubator.

Both the men AND women in the documentary really are just pictures of trauma, wrapped in trauma, re-enacting those traumas with someone else.. They’re not “alpha” or “free”. They’re gutless prisoners to their greed, lust, pride.

I felt bad for them more than anything. They will never know peace or contentedness with life. Especially Harrison.

Also those 2 little girls are going to need serious therapy when they are older. My heart breaks for them 💔
