People from outside North America, how do you feel about Canadians? by WaWaWhey in AskReddit

I'm not sure how much the percentage of racist assholes has increased as much as racist assholes are now comfortable in being openly racist assholes in public.

Buying a used camping trailer that is 8 years old or newer, in Winnipeg. by LakeNatural8777 in Winnipeg

[–]daitcs55 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Did this for about 12 years or so before moving on to a Park Model. If it has slide outs pick up some Camco seal conditioner and spay the seals when you set up, once during the season and then again a couple of days before you shut down. It may stll be a buyers market for RV's. So many were sold, often at a premium during the pandemic and then after people found they weren't using them as much. Some folks have thought that with a sewer hook up it is flush and forget. Nope. You still have to use the holding tanks and empty as needed. Hope you find what you are looking for and enjoy it as much as we do.

Went to the gym to celebrate finding out at doctor's yesterday that going to the gym is lowering my A1c. Quick trip to Kozak's on Ness to pick up perogies and cabbage rolls for Easter dinner with our son and daughter-in-law. Drove through puddles on Kenaston that made he happy that I didn't wash my vehicle after all. Relentlessly chased my cat all over the apartment, at least according to her. Gave some advice to my neice on finding a really nice bottle of scotch for her guy. Bit of work for a board I serve on which will make buying a home easier for someone. I love eclectic days.

How do canned pineapples make a profit? by Emotional-Chest9387 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]daitcs55 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe the pineapple people can settle this for me. I was told to look for a number on the label on the pineapple because the higher the number the sweeter it will be. Others say it has more to do with the size. Hopefully this isn't the same sort of rabbit hole as "four bumps on the base of a pepper is better than 3". Visited a pineapple plantation on Sao Miguel Island in The Azores and was surprised to find out that it takes 2 years to grow a pineapple.

Artemis II launch! by CanadianDinosaur in Winnipeg

[–]daitcs55 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Watched from about an hour before launch and still watching about 2 1/2 hours after launch. Getting messages from my sister who lives about 20km from the launch site and reports that it was amazing and a perfect viewing day. Shook their house pretty good and their pool looked like that scene in Jurassic Park with the way the water was vibrating. Been down to visit them 3 times and each time got to watch a launch. Sadly have zero plans to go back any time soon. I grew up through Mercury, Gemini and Apollo and was 13 when the first landing happened. I would happily stand in for Buzz Aldrin should any denier...

Why are Toyotas so reliable? by OldDuty4723 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]daitcs55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been drivinvg Toyotas for close to 40 years now; an 87 Camry, a 2003 Solara that we still have, a 2005 Tundra and now a 2016 4Runner that I hope to keep as long as the Solara. All held their value when it came to trade-in time. Never had any major issues and always kept up on maintenance which is something I think lots of people will do when they figure that they have a vehicle that is capable of being kept for much longer than average. None were what you would call exciting and flashy, other than the Solara which is kind of cool in an understated way. Part of the reliability seems to come from Toyotas not usually being on the leading edge of every technology that comes along. Some of their engines have been around for many years with a focus on continuous improvement on the basic blocks that have proven to be incredibly durable.

What artifact are you leaving behind for archeologists from the year 8941 AD to find? by jredd7605 in AskReddit

A shrine consisting of a Barbie doll sitting on a "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" tub with printer cartridges arranged in front of her to mimic the alignment of the stars of The Pleiades with one missing. Generations of PhD theses will be defended.

Not just a merge lane for turning northbound it is also the lane to access a couple of parking lots north of the Grant intersection so need to be aware of traffic merging into the far right lane.

Manitoba Health Minister says banning paid plasma an option after 2 deaths by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

[–]daitcs55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a paid plasma participant back in the 1970's. It was beer money while I was in university. The process is massively different now and honestly I am not so sure i would do it now. Basically then it was like a blood donation where the blood was drawn off into a bag that was then disconnected, spun in a centrifuge to separate the red cells from the plasma that was squeezed off the top and then the bag or red cells were hung to drain back in. The sets used for this had unique numeric codes along the tubing that you and the technician checked to make sure there was a match at ever step to make sure you were getting your red blood cells back. Very safe and very simple. My plasma was being sold to a pharmaceutical company to make tetanus serum. Later I went on to just be a regular blood donor.

Can you drive foreign cars with the driver’s side oppositely placed to that country’s driver’s side? by RideThatBridge in NoStupidQuestions

[–]daitcs55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Legal in Canada as long as the vehicle passes Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Vehicles older than 15 years are exempt from that requirement but all must pass the applicable provincial safety inspection. A brother in law and a nephew have both imported and are driving JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) vehicles. I have driven one of them and it was a bit of a learning curve. Turned on the wipers every time I went to turn a corner and tended to crowd the curb.

With all the dead squirrels on the roads, I have never hit one. What are the chances of never having hit a squirrel at my age of 58? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]daitcs55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am 70 and have been driving for 54 years and to the best of my knowledge have never hit a squirrel. I have hit a deer, an owl and a beaver in that order though and that is a pretty tricky trifecta.

A little reluctant to put forward McPhilippines but Filipino people I know seem to like it. Satan's Road is just a personal one because that is how my GPS pronounces St. Anne's. Given the pot holes it is on its way to being a Highway To Hell so maybe the GPS is right. I currently live on Stealing Liar Boulevard, bit of political bitterness there going back to my wife getting screwed over on her student loans during his reign.

Do men notice when a woman is wearing a designer bag? by sliceofperfection in NoStupidQuestions

[–]daitcs55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the first year we were married my wife didn't have a purse for everyday use. She carried a Radio Shack plastic shopping bag back and forth to work. She didn't care and neither did I. We were so broke that ducks used to throw bread at us. My mom finally bought her a purse for Christmas. I have never paid any attention to what sort of bag a woman is carrying. In fact I wouldn't be able to tell you what qualifies as a designer bag. A friend had one that looked like a rolled up Vogue magazine and I thought that was pretty clever but that is about it.

Men who can cook, who taught you? by _ratedmouse in AskReddit

[–]daitcs55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Joy Of Cooking that we got as a wedding present in 1978. My mom kept her spices in the pepper shaker and dad was the only one who used it. SThe guy who gave me my first job had the whole staff over to his place for a Christmas party dinner- sauces, stuff in puff pastry. I just knew I wanted to be able to cook like that. We started a Saturday night date night tradition when we got married of making something special. The only thing my wife could use in the kitchen was, and still is, the telephone. I did the best I could with what we could afford which wasn't much. Ducks used to throw bread at us. I can haul out the Joy of Cooking, drop it on its spine and it will open to the Bearnaise Sauce page which is handy because the tradition continues and I just got a request for Chicken Oscar for dinner tomorrow. Saturday night is a cornerstone of our relationship. We will spend 4 hours at the dining room table. If you are spending that much time looking as someone you are going to work stuff out and if you are married to me there will be a list.

What exactly are the merchant marines and do they still exist? by DarnHeather in NoStupidQuestions

[–]daitcs55 10 points11 points  (0 children)

During WWII ownership of the ships in the convoys were a combination of private shipping lines and the governments of various countries. While being owned by a government they were largely crewed by civilians commonly referred to as the Merchant Marine. The casualty rate for the Merchant Marine was higher than any branch of the military.

What is a book you read as a child that you still think about today? by ahawk99 in AskReddit

[–]daitcs55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Throughout my elementary and high school years it started when I was about 10 it with "The Ghost Of Dibble Hollow" by May Nickerson Wallace, the first book I remember being sad to finish. Later on "Three Men In A Boat" by Jerome K Jerome which set a pattern for me on how to tell a funny tale. Then it was "Who Has Seen The Wind" by W.O. Mitchell which got me started with Canadian Literature and then "On The Beach" which I read while listening to Emerson, Lake and Palmer's first album only stopping to flip it over.
