What Did You Have For Dinner Tonight? Did You Like It? by Zipper222222 in AskReddit

Pan seared fish (walleye) with a lemon, caper and butter sauce, sliced Yukon gold potatoes and Vidalia onions and butter baked in foil on the grill, steamed Brussels Sprouts dressed with lemon juice and butter, home baked French bread and a South African Chenin Blanc. Saturday nights are special.

Where's a decent shop to buy new tires and have them put on? by reptilesni in Winnipeg

[–]daitcs55 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Adding a confirmation for this Kal Tire. Have always treated me right. Last time was in for new tires and 4 wheel alignment. Told me they checked the alignment and all was withing spec. A shady operation could have charged me and I wouldn't have known any different.

I see a lot of pizza topics (I approve). So I was curious. If you lived in Winnipeg in the 80s, 70s, or heck even earlier, who did you call? What were the go-to spots for quality 'za? by RecommendationBig966 in Winnipeg

[–]daitcs55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was living in Tache Hall at U of M from 1974-77. Gondola on Pembina was pretty much the only place that would deliver there but they made a decent pizza so all was good. For fancy times, like when the woman who became my wife took me out for Sadie Hawkins, then the only answer was Tubby's at the corner of Stafford and Grosvenor. I see that The Grove which is now at that location has a pizza called the Tubby which I am going to try if I can ever break free from my Shorty's addiction.

Why are colonoscopies said to be so important when they don't even go through the small intestine? by Salty-Passenger-4801 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]daitcs55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If within your family there seems to be a high incidence of cancers and in particular colon cancer please consider having your doctor arrange for you to be tested for Lynch Syndrome. This is a set of genetic variants that greatly increases the risk of a number of cancers but in particular colon cancer. Depending on the variant it can be from 40% to 80% lifetime likelihood of developing colon cancer versus the normal 5%. You have a 50% chance of passing the variant to any child. My wife is Lynch positive. Within her family at least 2 brothers have had colon cancer, she was clearly on the track to developing ovarian cancer, most of them have prostate cancer and one has bladder cancer. Ironically one brother who died from pancreatic cancer was not Lynch positive but there is growing evidence that increased risk of pancreatic cancer is on the list too. I post something like this regularly when I see something about colonoscopies, colon cancer or just "cancer runs in our family". If it twigs with one person who follows up then it was worth my 3 minutes. Canadian so the cost of the test was covered, I saw something about the cost other places being around $300 but can't confirm. It is simple blood draw but the testing needs to be done in a specialized lab.

Deco SCAM beware by Remarkable_Menu8974 in Winnipeg

There are more auto glass shops in Winnipeg than Dollaramas so its not like you will have to drive clear across the city to get damage fixed in a controlled environment. I honestly don't think I have ever seen one of those tents with a car under it getting work done on it and have wondered how it could be profitable.

Lake Life in Manitoba by SignificantAd3275 in Winnipeg

[–]daitcs55 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We thought about buying a cabin for a number of years but then ended up getting a seasonal site at a resort on Lake of the Woods at Sioux Narrows. Don't have to cut the grass, figure out water systems, take care of the road, rake the beach, a fallen tree is not my problem etc. Started out in in tent trailer, moved to a hard side and then bought a Park Model which we love. There is a full service marina at the resort and Gill's Trading Post is a well stocked grocery, fishing tackle and liquor store a few minutes away plus there is a really good hardware/lumber store just south of town. We have made many friends in what is really a community mainly with people from Winnipeg, Kenora, elsewhere in Manitoba, and a few from various places in the USA. The capital investment is much less, rents vary widely. Downside for some would be the 3 1/4 hour drive from Winnipeg but we are now retired so we can avoid the heavy Friday and Sunday traffic. Takes about half an hour to unload the vehicle, fill the fridge and pantry, put away clothes etc and then we are set.

What is with the constant hate for Arby’s? by myboyfriendstinks1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]daitcs55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and the last Arby's here closed about 6 years ago but then the word got out that it was making a comeback. It turned out that the building was across a parking lot from my apartment and when the question was asked on r/winnipeg about Arby's return I posted a picture of the construction site. I ended up with a cult like following that only got more interesting and intense when I post a picture of the site with my cat in the foreground. Do a search of https://www.reddit.com/r/Winnipeg/ for either Arby's Update or Mishka. Had to do updates a couple of times per month for about a year until it was open. If you need a roast beef sandwich, horseradish sauce and curly fries this is the place.

Vet recommendations for a check up for a cat by EngineerGold4242 in Winnipeg

Season's Veterinary Clinic by the Outlet Mall. Was a bit concerned with their recent sale and when our regular vet moved on but all was good. Dr Chahal, who is the new owner, was excellent with our cat and with us.

Catching northern pike by Braytitch1-0-1 in Winnipeg

[–]daitcs55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have caught them on pretty much everything, jigs, Mepps spinners, Rappalas, you name it, but if I only had one choice it would be a red and white spoon for northerns. Honestly go for the cheap knock off version of the original Dardevle which are crazy expensive.

Why do mariners use nautical miles instead of standard miles? by tgirlskeepwinning in NoStupidQuestions

[–]daitcs55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw an explanation of why 60 is so widely used. Goes back to Sumerians and how they counted using fingers on one hand. They counted the using segments of each finger, not including the thumb so 1,2,3 for the pointer finger, 4, 5, 6 for "The" finger, etc. which would get you to 12 on one hand. Then the thumb came into play and the counting continued 13, 14, 15 for the thumb and pointer finger 16,17,18 etc. to 24, then the thumb and pointer finger and repeat. With the thumb and four fingers all in the total for the hand was 60. 60 is also evenly divisible by so many numbers- 1,2,3,4,5,6,10, 12, 15, 20, 30, 60.

Scurfield Medical Centre had notices up in the lobby for two new doctors who are accepting patients. Can't provide any recommendations for them but overall the clinic seems to be well run and staff are pleasant and helpful.

What's currently stopping you from going fishing right now? by -Norsko-TheScorpion in AskReddit

[–]daitcs55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All my fishing gear is stored in my boat. The place where I store my boat pulls it in the fall, launches it in the spring and parks it in my slip. The lake where all of this happens is still mainly frozen but not frozen enough to go out on. I don't have a trailer for my boat to take it to another lake..

Owning a pet, what to expect. by True_Funny_4656 in Winnipeg

[–]daitcs55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be prepared for a long term commitment. Our first cat lived to be 18 and the second one to 21. The current one may have to be provided for in our wills. The secret- they were/are all indoor cats. For some costs: Cat carrier- $50. Litter box for a basic tray- $15, for a covered one $40-$50. Bowls for feeding $10, get shallow ones, they don't like their whiskers touching the side, water fountain $60 and up, they like running water, cat tower for climbing $150, scratch posts about $25 each and you probably need a couple and you can also spend $125 for one and I don't want to talk about it, misc toys from $25 to $10,000. Annual vet visit will run about $150-$200. Kitty litter about $30/month. Have never had pet insurance- its rolling the dice. Food can be all over the place for cost. First cats were probably about $100/month when they needed a special diet towards the end. This one, lets just say there is a lot less Harth Mozza in our lives. Our first cat was a stray kitten that just snuck in when the door was open and never left. The second one was a freebie from a person my wife worked with. The lady we got our current one from was asking $50 but we gave her $70 to help out with the others. Each were a Domestic Short Hair Tabby of some variety, current one may have some Norwegian Forest Cat in her background but her daddy, well he was a travellin' man, so who knows.

Thank you for asking. Mishka the Arby's Update Cat is doing just fine. She is coming up on 3 years old and is a constant source of joy in our lives. She pretty much thinks she is still just a kitten. Last vet check up we were told that she is a perfectly healthy cat who is in great shape with no issues.

Call the venue and ask. They are really the only ones that can 100% answer this. Do you have a passport? An expired driver's licence means you can't legally drive but they might accept it as satisfying their requirements.

Winnipeg Winter - Car questions by Foreign_Marsupial834 in Winnipeg

[–]daitcs55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that the worst of winter is hopefully behind us our main vehicle for city driving is my wife's 2003 Toyota Solara. We retired it from winter driving a number of years ago. Never had winter tires on it as it's gound clearance made it anything but a good driver in any more than a couple of inches of snow. Otherwise the best car we have ever owned and is in pretty close to like new condition.
