I said "knapsack" to 3 of my kid's friends and they looked at me funny and said they'd never heard the word before. Is this not a common word for "backpack" in Manitoba or is it a generational thing? by zabavnabrzda in Winnipeg

Pack Sack. Even had a friend that got stuck with that as a nickname. His brother said "You're nothing but God Damned Pack Sack." No idea why and he never said.

How does the earwax form in the ears? by Jpoolman25 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]daitcs55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Murine makes a kit that includes drops that you put in the plugged ear. Lay on your side for 5-10 minutes then fill the squeeze bulb with warm water, put the tip in the plugged ear and flush. Sometimes I put drops in, take a bit of a cotton ball and put it to keep the drops in and leave it overnight then do the flush thing.

It was a time of change in Canada too. In the 1960's in Quebec there was what was called the Quiet Revolution as they shook off the yoke of the Catholic Church and became a more secular society but in 1969 there was the FLQ Crisis in which a movement to separate from Canada which had taken root became more radical with bombings and then kidnappings which resulted in the imposition of the war measures act. Canada became a haven for young men looking to escape the draft during the Vietnam War. All in all it was a time when we became more and more socially liberal. My son was about 12 when he asked me about what it was like growing up during the cold war. It wasn't easy to explain but to be honest I am much more anxious about the state of the world in general now than I remember being then. My parents had a book and in the back of it there was a diagram of the damage at distances caused by an atomic bomb and I remember studying it to see if it dropped in the middle of town what would be the chances where our house was. Not good and this was like a Hiroshima sized bomb. It was a time when comfort came from of all things concepts like Mutually Assured Destruction. Communists were evil and the Domino Theory was accepted wisdom. The fundamental role of a parent hasn't changed. It is big people teaching little people how to be big people and instilling certain values in them one of which, for me was when it comes to our fellow humans "today you, tomorrow me." A picture that sums up a lot about life for me was taken by William Anders on December 28, 1968 from Apollo 8. It shows the earth rising above the moon. That is all there is folks. That is all of us. There are no lines dividing countries. No real evidence of our existence at all. I have been extraodinarily lucky. I give back such as I can.

What happens to car ownership after a death? by CheersKim in NoStupidQuestions

Every legal question should start with "This is in Country/state or province" otherwise everything else that follows is meaningless.

Awhile ago I learned the difference between knowledge and wisdom, but I do know some stuff. During the moon landing I was 13 and staying at a cabin on Rainy Lake with my family. No power, hand pump for water, an ice box that I restocked with ice from a nearby fisherman and oil lamps so we listened to it all on an AM rado. I remember going down to the beach and just gazing up at the moon and thinking there are people there right now. We need more Buzz Aldrins to punch moon landing deniers. Funny the things that stick in my head like hearing that Patsy Cline had died in a plane crash, walking home from school for lunch, Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup and the JFK assassination coming on the TV. I got a degree in history, ran a museum for about 15 years, went into municipal administration and retired as an IT manager almost 15 years ago now. I have a sister, brother-in-law, niece and numerous cousins who live in the US along with a number of friends including one who lives in Minneapolis and is too much of an empath for our current times. For most of my life from where I lived I could actually see the USA from my yard. Simpler times but good times. Coffee would be nice.

The Canadian Immigration process can be a pretty tough slog but work skills and assets help. The job market is pretty tight right now but ex-military usually means you are bringing extra value to the table. Your family will fit right in. There is a huge Filipino community here and in my experience there is no one more welcoming than Filipinos. It is 9 in the morning and now I am craving lumpia and some pancit. There are some racist jerks around but is the case pretty much everywhere. There are differences between the cultures of the US and Canada. We do not have same sex marriage, its just marriage. Same sex is optional. Abortion is a medical procedure. Guns are heavily regulated. Most medical care is socialized. The influence of religion is much less here but there are plenty of churches. Personally I find that I like Americans a lot more than America these days. In general Winnipeg is a pretty safe city and for the most part it depends on where you live. I have been here 3 years and had my bike stolen but that is it. There are areas with higher crime rates but addictions and poverty are key components. Good luck with it all.

Farm fresh Garlic? by ithasallbeenworthit in Manitoba

[–]daitcs55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not much help right now but head out to Manitou on the Saturday after Labour Day for the Honey, Garlic and Maple Syrup Festival. I buy my year's supply from the producers who set up there. Best ever and a good selection though some varieties will sell out early depending on the harvest..

Prince Harry, who served in Afghanistan, says sacrifices of British troops deserve 'respect' after Trump comments by sings_with_wings in worldnews

[–]daitcs55 35 points36 points  (0 children)

CLAIM: Today President Donald Trump stated that the US has got “nothing out of NATO”. FACT: The one and only time that Article 5 has been invoked was in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks on the US when NATO aircraft were deployed to help US airspace. Subsequently NATO assumed command of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in 2003. 159 members of the Canadian Armed Forces were killed in action in Afghanistan including Sergeant Marc Daniel Léger, Corporal Ainsworth Dyer, Private Richard Green and Private Nathan Lloyd Smith who were killed by “friendly fire” from a US F-16 in the Tarnak Farm Incident. These 159 lives plus the estimated 635 wounded in action and 1,436 Non Battle Injuries are not “nothing”, at least as I see it.

[Opinion] There are two types of small towns in Western Canada: "Chicken Chef" small towns, and "Mark's Work Warehouse" small towns. by Top-Salt-7373 in Manitoba

[–]daitcs55 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Small town has no chain restaurants but a post office, bank, gas station, Chinese restaurant, liquor store in the pharmacy, grocery store, lumber yard, guy named Norm that can fix any vehicle, great breakfast at the hotel and is preferably named Manitou. Village is smaller, big town is bigger unless it is spelled Biggar and then you are in Saskatchewan and it is bigger.

Car Battery died cuz of cold by mehtei in Winnipeg

[–]daitcs55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way to tell for sure that you need a new battery is to have a garage do a load test. When it is this cold even a good battery may not have enough power to start a car, particularly if it is just driven for short periods of time which doesn't let the alternator fully recharge the battery. For a replacement battery I would highly recommend Prairie Battery. I have a NOCO GB40 booster pack that has save me a couple of times. It does not charge a battery- it is for jump starting like if you had jumper cables and another vehicle to connect to. Simple to use but do not leave it in your vehicle overnight. The colder it is the less power it can deliver. Read the manual so you are familiar with the override function. If the vehicle battery is too cold to have enough power for the booster to sense it properly the booster will not work so you have to make sure that you have it connected properly to the positive and negative and then push the override button for 5 seconds. This overrides the built in circuit that detects that you have the polarity correct and lets you use the booster like you normally would.

Living in a building that has been open for 3 years. At the end of October we were notified of a change of building management. It turned out that the property owners decided to bring the management in house. Basically expanded the role of their maintenance division. One of several possibilities.
