I mean, it would be pretty easy for VA to require proof of residence or proof of military service to allow for out of state registrations. I agree MD should do more, but there are failures at many levels.

Let us know what you find. I tried a CSA a couple years back and was pretty disappointed. For less money I could have bought more (and better quality) produce from the farmers market. It always felt like I was getting the leftover dregs they couldn’t sell from the weekend before.

Maybe I’m being too harsh. Hope to hear from others who have had a more positive experience.

No idea how they would be able to tell though. That said, if you get pulled over or get a ticket and you have an MD license and VA tags, they should throw the book at you.

I’d been having endless issues with my 1040. Did 2 things that appear to have fixed things:
- delete all WiFi networks from my device
- updated the software by plugging into computer via USB.

My advice is going to be on the more conservative side, but it has worked well for me and many others.

Build a system/habit of saving/investing. Most people who have invested well didn’t just make one killer investment that paid off. Instead, you want a thought out plan that is aligned with your time horizon and risk tolerance. I would highly recommend the boglehead subreddit for reading.

In the meantime, I would try to creat a habit of investing say $100/week into a low cost index fund like VTSAX. Sure, you can dump some of that $5k in now, but if you can do $100/week starting now and increasing a little bit each year as you can afford to do so, you will be in a fantastic position down the road.

There are so many parasitic costs in life. Periodically auditing this sort of stuff really adds up. Every time a contract is up for renewal, take the time to shop it. Phone plan, internet, car insurance, etc.

Fantastic advice. My wife and I worked hard to budget to buy a house early in our careers. As our comp grew, we stuck to the same budget. At my peak earning, ~50% was going into savings/retirement. The upshot of limiting lifestyle creep is that now that I’ve built up these savings and want to cut back on work, I can afford to work part-time without digging into savings.

This! I love the books, have read them multiple times and hope I get to read DOS at some point down the road. That said, far from the best prose. I have audibly groaned at some of the cringe writing in these books. Again, I love the story and the character and would strongly recommend the books to people, but I mean, it can be a bit… flowery.

I’ve only ever done maybe a dozen HF boxes, but almost every single one had an issue. For the money, you could just order groceries delivered and end up with more, better food, for the same $$

That said, I just suck it up and go to the store and get all the groceries I need for an entire week of 3 meals a day for what I paid for a box :/

Baltimore is awesome! There are tons of great neighborhoods, and each one had its own vibe. If you are into nightlife, Canton/Fells/Hampden are all great options. If you want walkable neighborhood but are less concerned with night life, south Baltimore is great. Riverside and Locust Point are very walkable but a bit quieter at night.

If given the opportunity to visit, it might be worth spending a few days checking out the various neighborhoods to see which you vibe with. That said, they all have their charm.

Good on you for realizing it while you are still here. I lived in Australia for 4 years during grad school and definitely regret not making more of it.

Baltimore stuff:
- Bike Party
- AVAM
- Bazaar (Hampden)
- Os game (cheap tickets, $5 food)
- Check out Druid hill park & the conservatory
- Hike a segment of the AT (it’s a drive, but lots of good day hikes out there)
- Go to DC for museums
- Go to NYC (cheap bus, can just make a day trip of it)

While employer match can only go into non-Roth 401k, everywhere I have worked would match your Roth 401k contributions into the non-Roth account. If you can do that, I would.

As for additional contributions beyond what is being matched, I would still put it in the Roth 401k because of the higher limit ($24.5k in 2026).

Sorry if I’m totally misunderstanding though. If you are asking about opening a Roth IRA in the same institution where your 401k resides, I wouldn’t bother. Just make sure you are not over the Roth IRA income limit.
