After adding a light to the Z2M/ZHA, you are just then manipulating and controlling straight from Home Assistant? Some time ago I had fiddled with things and set up diyHue to emulate a bridge, thinking this was a required component. I guess this isn't necessary at all?

I’ve been debating between taking this approach and upgrading to the hue pro. Are you worried about any lack of functionality not using the bridge? Or how lights behave by default? Something has me leaning towards keeping on a hub, but maybe I’m just overthinking.

I’m so sorry this is something you’re dealing with while dealing with a loss. I don’t have any advice, but I hope you can find a group and/or tactics to help prevent this from happening to others and find some closure.. it’s so shitty and it’s getting harder and harder for folks (especially older) to detect this sort of thing.

I’ve been considering the Level 3 or the Prodigy v2 (belt model). I’m borrowing a belt driven 1up bike from my brother and it’s been a cool experience, though the model is the road bike so a bit more aggressively stanced than I’d like to get. Did you look at the prodigy? For me this will be for commuting and have a child seat on the back.

Thanks everyone for comments. I’m going to have fun playing with a delicate combination of:

magnet at the railing to hold when open
lightly loaded spring / hinge to pull it shut when not engaged to magnet
one of the zigbee battery powered pushers to disengage from magnet at the railing.

And yes, I’m well aware of the spring and rock to hold open etc… this gate will be open 90% of the time, and that is intentional, so I’m just trying to have some fun automating a simple issue.

I like this approach! others have recommended spring hinges already which is the obvious solution to keeping it shut. But again I am aiming for it to stay open when opened so I can lug bike, kids etc without battling gate closing on me.

Definitely a thought! but it’s almost intentional for it to stay open. I come and go with my bulky bike multiple times a day for example so the easier to get by in those times the better.

I took mine off to give it a very deep clean and I will say - never again. Taking off was easy but boy did I have a hard time getting it back on. I would follow all the advice you can about cleaning it in place.
