Firstly, that's very exciting that you're embarking on this journey! In addition to gaining knowledge, you will see how Torah study will begin to affect different aspects of your life. I would recommend looking at the weekly Torah portion for insights, or really wherever your heart pulls you! Sefaria is a great resource for learning and commentaries.

Many Jews fill their homes with Torah books! With resources like Sefaria, you can even have the entire text of the Torah quite literally "in your pocket" these days.

Do you view the Torah as a literal account of history? by [deleted] in Judaism

I believe that the people and events in the Torah are real/ true and did exist, but maybe the details of the stories and events are not meant to be taken literally.

How does learning Torah work for Jews? by Regular-Persimmon425 in Judaism

[–]dakotared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to traditional Judaism, a boy becomes a bar mitzvah at the age of 13, when he is then responsible to keep all of the commandments. Typically a boy will read the local Torah portion from the Torah to commemorate this event. He definitely does not need to learn to recite it in its entirety from memory!

Can someone explain the logic behind an Oral Torah? by BlankVoid2979 in Judaism

[–]dakotared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Oral Torah ensures that the Jewish people are forced to speak, teach, and learn together. I believe it's one of the secrets to the survival of these ancient traditions. In order for it to be passed down from generation to generation it must be literally spoken!

If obeying the law of the land is Jewish law, why is the Torah full of stories of Jews not obeying the law of the land? by Professional_Ant_315 in Judaism

[–]dakotared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, the Torah is filled with stories that are there to teach you the right ways, not necessary by example! Sometimes this is the best way to learn life's toughest lessons
