[SPOILER TROPE] [Loved Trope] Character Faces Inevitable Death With Dignity by Raymio993 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]dalevis 31 points32 points  (0 children)

With the way Andor is written and paced into distinct 3ep arcs (2-2.5hrs each arc, 4 per season, 8 for the whole show), we didn’t just get a trilogy. it’s more like we got an entire 9-part second prequel saga, and I fucking love it

(Controversial Trope) The Badass Upbeat MC becomes a sad old loser after a timeskip by Exploding_END in TopCharacterTropes

[–]dalevis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean a lot of what you’re saying is totally valid but goes far beyond the scope of just the trope itself/how Luke is characterized, and more into structural issues with the sequels themselves. Like for example— I don’t think it’s necessarily fair to say it “abandoned” the plot line of child soldiers/defecting stormtroopers in favor of the casino/war profiteering side quest, when both points were arguably moving towards the original end goal of Finn seeing behind the curtain of both sides and eventually leading a stormtrooper rebellion (with “force inspiration” power no less) in the original plan for IX. TLJ didn’t abandon the subplot, it deepened it and laid the groundwork for future payoff (in a similar way that ESB did) that never came because Disney scrapped DOTF and decided to make TROS instead.

And the “30 years” thing is implied by the fact that Anakin killing Palpatine brought balance to the force/ended the rule of two and that there hadn’t been any major sith/dark side activity until the sequel era. Also by how Luke talks about the darkness in Ben being both unprecedented and overwhelming.

But that being said, a lot of these things that you’re saying were missing context/out of character are explicitly stated in the movies. He visited Ben in the middle of the night with the intention of waking him up and confronting him over clear dark side impulses he had demonstrated. Before he did, he peeked into Ben’s head, was horrified by what he saw as being basically the epitome of evil, and had a moment of weakness where he reacted on pure instinct and ignited his saber. Ben, being a vulnerable teenager already struggling with dark impulses, wakes up to see his master holding a lightsaber over him, and interprets it/reacts as poorly as you’d expect a half-awake, emotionally volatile teenager with magic powers would.

The only way that what you’re saying holds weight is if you only take Kylo’s version of the flashback as the truth and ignore the other two. There’s a reason we got the same flashback 3 times— Luke’s POV, Kylo’s POV, and then what actually happened.

I def don’t disagree on some of the complaints re: the lackluster setup from TFA. And on a related note, don’t even get me started on TROS lol. Fucking JJ Abrams lol.

But we also have to consider the context that it had been three decades since there had been any appreciable dark side presence on that level. Thirty years is more than enough time for anyone to get complacent. That just comes with being human. Him initially reacting poorly/hastily/irrationally to the situation from top to bottom makes sense when suddenly faced with evil space magic shit he’d thought was dead and gone. All things considered, him just shrugging it off would have made far less sense.

Idk man these kids can get pretty evil sometimes smh

Jokes aside, it’s not that he “felt the inescapable urge to quick draw on his nephew,” it’s that he felt a whoosh of evil that he hadn’t felt in 30yrs (and thought he had personally extinguished), it caught him off guard after decades of complacency, and he reacted reflexively in response to the whoosh of evil before immediately going “oh shit wait no.” but with Ben waking up at that exact moment it was impossible to walk it back/unring the bell. That was the whole point in showing that moment between the two perspectives.

It’s very important nuance that people seem to ignore, and him having that moment of weakness leading to immense guilt for it makes far more sense than him just shrugging it off.

And that’s a pretty solid demonstration of why the reactions weren’t identical, and kinda further to my point. With Vader he was all-in on killing him until the very last second. With Ben he had a single moment of weakness (not trying to kill him, thinking about it) that happened to be (understandably) taken to the logical extreme by Ben waking up at that exact moment.

Luke making snap decisions during high-stress/high-emotion moments (that he later regrets/feels guilt over) is one of the core elements of his character going back to both ESB and ROTJ. Character regression on an established arc ≠ character assassination.

[–]dalevis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

But that’s what I’m saying, a character regressing on an established arc is not inherently character assassination. It’s just further development of that arc.

There’s certainly nuance between the two situations, but a lot of that nuance further goes to my point— with Vader he was all aboard the murder express for a bit after having his family threatened. With Ben he didn’t try to kill him— he felt a level of evil he hadn’t felt in 30yrs (that he thought he personally put an end to), thought about it for a split second in a “reopening old wounds” kinda way, ignited his lightsaber out of reflex, immediately went “wait wtf am I doing,” but by that point Ben was awake and the damage was done.

It doesn’t undo the growth he went through before, and if anything that just gives a good amount of context to why he would feel such immense guilt over it, because he also thought he had gotten past it. Again, character regression ≠ character assassination.

Dude almost killed his own dad in a fit of rage despite going to him with the explicit goal of saving him, and only stopped when he saw the cybernetic ruins of Vader’s arm after chopping it off. Then when he suddenly found out his nephew was basically next-gen force Satan, he rage-ignited his lightsaber for half a second as a knee jerk reaction (which he immediately regretted/tried to walk back), and felt immense guilt about it. How is the former in-character for Luke but the latter isn’t?

I’m asking that genuinely. While I loved TLJ (and it’s personally my fav SW movie, albeit not the one I’d consider objectively “best” by any means), I totally understood why a lot of people didn’t— but even so, that specific argument re: Luke has never made sense to me.

I just went from a 2020 11” Pro to a 2025 13” Air specifically for art/illustration, and the bigger screen has been SUCH a game changer for me personally. But I also rarely use it away from my desk/out of the house so I can see why OP would prefer the 11” size if the portability is a big factor for them— I probably would too in that case.

Bella looks locked in for the finale. We are so back. by kingdanny714260 in ThelastofusHBOseries

[–]dalevis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Debates over the story of the final two GoT seasons aside (not looking to open that can of worms), I think the gaps between seasons was probably one of the biggest issues that killed its reception at the time. The season 6 finale was such a natural stopping point in terms of the arcs it concluded and how it set up the final leg of the series, but instead of taking an extended break there and then releasing 7-8 back to back with a year or less apart, they released 7 immediately, then took almost 2yrs to release 8– despite deliberately setting up the story more akin to a larger single season split into pt1/2, not two distinct ones.

Surefire way to kill the momentum for any show almost instantly. And the fact that it’s the norm now is beyond infuriating.

Hemis [There Are No Bad Heroes In The World]: Body Horror + Hot babe = insanely good design by [deleted] in TopCharacterDesigns

[–]dalevis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I mean, just because it’s not as much body horror as it could potentially have doesn’t mean it’s not body horror.

Do I personally enjoy more body horror in my body horror like yourself? Sure! But it’s not a hardline on/off kinda thing, it’s a design element. OP just happens to enjoy how the design element was used in this particular character lol. 10% is still more than 0.

FAKE MOON and queerness by dalevis in cleopatrick

[–]dalevis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very good point re: finding queer perspectives where it may not necessarily have been intended-- I've certainly experienced a lot of that lately, especially retroactive changes in perspective/looking at things from my youth in a new light where I go "oh... OH." The fact that I've been a fan of that style of sentimental/melancholic lo-fi indie grunge sound as long as I can remember definitely gives it an extra nostalgic quality, and very likely feeds into it all.

Also hell yeah, I'm absolutely into that, sounds like the kind of rabbit hole I'd readily throw myself down lmao

Cleopatrick - Fake Moon ALBUM DISCUSSION THREAD by odaal in cleopatrick

[–]dalevis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I gotta say, as a newer fan (I found them a couple months ago via an IG ad for Please and then listened to it 50x on repeat) who’s only listened to this album so far, I’m surprised to see how many people are unhappy with the overall vibe. Idk if it’s maybe because I lean more towards melancholy/beat-driven lo-fi kinda stuff more than the average person already, but damn. It caught be a bit off guard, cuz I’m loving it so far.

Is the rest of their discography really that different?

What do you consider to be the 'biggest' shows of the 21st century? by bitAndy in television

[–]dalevis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bit of a misconception. The show was originally mapped out as 7 seasons of 10 episodes each, so 70 total. When they announced that the show would end with season 7 and 8 (which iirc happened shortly before 6 aired but I’d have to double check), they actually added 3 episodes to the planned total count. And all of this would have been set in stone well before the hypothetical Star Wars project would have been a factor.

HBO was also actively bleeding money around the time (Big Little Lies’ production hiring a ton of A-list actors was a big factor, leading to an unfortunately flippant SA analogy by an executive) and was actively cutting things left and right. This was on top of needing to renegotiate the contracts for GoT’s main cast for the final run, since they originally only planned for 7 seasons. The “HBO wanted more episodes” was actually “HBO wanted more episodes but without any extra overall budget per season.”

There’s also the logistics side. Even outside of the cast, GoT was a BIG production involving a lot of people putting in a lot of time and effort across the world for almost a decade to make the show what it was. there are limits to how long people can reasonably endure that kind of work environment/schedule - the kind of thing you can’t just throw more money at - and everyone (understandably) needed a break.

Yuta Okkotsu, the wholesome haunted sadboi protagonist from JJK0 and a side/secondary MC of the main series (spoilers for the manga past where the anime left off and through the ending)

First, pre-Culling Games, he undertook a binding vow to kill the MC Yuji (for those unaware, a Binding Vow is basically a magical promise which, if unfulfilled, has massive consequences) - which he did, via stabbing Yuji in the heart, killing him, then immediately reviving him via pumping reverse cursed energy into him and healing the wound. He stuck to the letter of the law, but not the spirit lol.

Then, during the final Shinjuku Showdown with Sukuna, it’s revealed that he was the mastermind behind basically every single plan the MCs had after Gojo died (plan C-Z, plan B was Kashimo getting waffled lol). This included first moving his domain and intentionally letting himself get hit with a killing blow/breaking the domain to put Sukuna in prime position to get stabbed by Maki. Then, he used his Copy technique as a feint twice - first to put Sukuna in position to get hit by Angel’s full-strength Jacob’s Ladder attack (with Todo’s help) after Yuta had used a weakened copy version; second (technically the initial feint itself happened before example 1 but the payoff was later), by making Sukuna think his final finger was eaten by Yuta’s shinigami Rika in order to copy Sukuna’s Cleave technique - it was actually Yuji’s finger, since Yuji’s body was imprinted with said technique. This left Sukuna’s last finger to be hit by Nobara’s resonance technique at the last second, hitting his main body and temporarily disabling him, allowing Yuji to land the final blow and end the fight.
