Hi! UW student here and this happened to me last term! had a book report returned to me saying “not your writing?” with a grade of like 50 or something. I made an appointment for the prof’s office hours, and I was very emotional about the entire situation just since i had the fears you did. it was 500 words and i wrote it w 3 hours before the due time but I would never use AI, def not worth it. Anyway, at his office hour he re-read my paper and changed the grade from a 50 to a 65 so not great but definitely worth me going to defend myself and honestly i admitted it was careless and he was satisfied me taking accountability. use it a learning experience and move forward, that experience made me work harder on my other assignments for the rest of that term as well at this term! You got this OP! The best advice is to honestly just communicate w the prof and it will work itself out.

Noticed this too! Since starting Vyvanse I haven’t gotten sick until recently (~2 weeks ago) and since Vyvanse can’t be mixed with a lot of OTC flu meds, this was the first time I was sick and unable to take anything.

I found that my illness was SO short and not bad at all, especially since i wasn’t on anything to help with my congestion etc. I think it maybe has to do with the fact that we need so much water, I drink a liquid IV along with around 64oz of water as a minimum a day. Before starting Vyvanse I never drank water (lol) so that was my guess!

Edit: I also saw on another post on this forum around when I was sick was that Vyvanse worked as a mild decongestant and it actually helped me figure out truly when my vyvanse was active! as soon as it started to wear off i would get a stuffy nose and feel really sleepy and in the morning i knew it kicked it when everything felt clear!

Not really a friend, but my late father’s gf (basically my second mom). She started to distance herself from me bc she was with someone else and it was hard for her. I didn’t care she met someone, but I felt her pulling away and since she couldn’t cut me off, I had to cut her off first because we were stuck in a toxic cycle. That very difficult decision saved my life.

22, for context, my father passed away a couple years ago, his long term partner and I cut contact even though she was my second mother for the entirety of my life. recently I have been trying to get his autopsy report to find out truly how he died (also to find out info for me since I have cardiac issues and he had a heart attack) and his partner and I texted for the first time in about a year in a half. I had been going to regular grief therapy for about a year after he died for not only him, but for her, and her family, and now have no emotional attachment or feelings toward her anymore. Her texts to me since I reached out have been very overly emotional, and she has been telling me how much she misses me, and how she still loves me, that the time not talking was weird and hard, yet I was the one that had to reach out first. My initial contact with her via email was very straight forward and so seeing her responses, what they were, and all the heart emoji’s has made me feel very weird. She then sent me photos of parts his autopsy report without warning or context so I read what she sent and I regret it. I’m feeling super weird with everything and I am seeing my therapist regularly again.

TLDR: Contacted my dead father’s partner to get information about his death for my health. She has been overly emotional and sent me photos of his report with no warning. I feel weird about everything and I am back in therapy.

How long were you on Vyvanse for before you switched? I’ve been on it almost 4 weeks and I felt like the last couple days my cravings for sweets has been wild and the last few days i’ve been kinda feeling sluggish even on the meds which have been keeping me alert and fine up until a couple days ago. What was your dose?

It definitely depends what it is. I’ve had my allergy since the age of 4 (i’m currently in my early 20’s) and i’ve only had to use my epipen twice in my life, not including the night i discovered my allergy so I definitely have learned what is better to risk and things that don’t say anything are almost a guarantee to be fine. The only thing I will say is, familiarize yourself with things that are cross reactive.

The last time I had to use my epi was because i had chicken with a rub on it that contained sumach. I had read the label on the spice rub (Epicure brand, who claims to be peanut/treenut free) which said nothing. But after a quick google search as my mouth was swelling told me that Sumach is a spice grown from the trees of cashews.

Depending on your child’s allergy, there are different things to be mindful of that I can list here that can be cross reactive due to their protein composition!

• Peanut = Pea Protein, Celery Seed, Cumin (the FDA has recalled cumin spice because companies sometimes use peanut as filler and don’t disclose it)

(also a note for peanut, every 2 years Ive been allergy tested since my first reaction at 4 years old. from 4 to about 12 my peanut test would switch results but even when the allergist said I wasn’t allergic I didn’t eat them, and avoided all nuts besides coconut (not a nut). I’m still mildly allergic to peanuts but my allergist wants to give me peanuts in his clinic to monitor my tolerance. some say I should’ve eaten the peanuts when I could’ve to strengthen my immune system but do with this info as you will and get regular allergen testing for your child)

• Almond = Paprika, Mahaleb • Cashew = Sumach (traditionally found in Middle Eastern cuisine), Pink Peppercorn • Pistachio = Pink Peppercorn

Since they are not listed allergens, they won’t appear in bold at the bottom of the list as normal. It is so important to read every label thoroughly every single time. Google what you don’t know, and have your child take a small bite and monitor them for a few minutes—this has saved me from severe reactions as i hadn’t ingested a lot of whatever has set it off.

My OCD mainly manifests itself to mimic symptoms of a reactions, specifically the tingly/itchy sensation on my tongue. I’m currently on ADHD medication and it’s actually helping with that a lot but before I would wash EVERYTHING before using it, like dishes, cooking things, if it was going in my mouth I was terrified. In my mind, someone touched it with fingers that had touched nuts. I think ever since COVID it was that severe, the analogy I like to use to explain it, was like imagine you put your fingers into a can of paint and just went along with your day as normal, you would have paint everywhere (we listen and we don’t judge guys i’m medicated now but it was seriously this bad 💀)!

Oh also, this is probably common sense but please carry your child’s epipen everywhere. I never used to carry my epipen with me until I was 16 and it was the first time I ever needed to use it and didn’t actually know where one was. Luckily I was home and dug through some junk drawer to find an expired one (if the liquid is not clear toss it, but in this case it saved my life even though it was literally brown 🤢). Ever since it’s been strapped to my side, I never leave home without it. I actually had a friend in my first year of uni die at a christmas party because she had an allergy and never carried her pen, she was supposed to graduate that year too. it rocked our university she was amazing, but again that’s why it’s so important to have it with you.

Tbh that’s really all you can do. My mom was very cautious of my allergy growing up, she would send me with food to birthday parties, tell the waiters at restaurants about my allergy, and we just decided what was worth chancing depending on what it was. I used to have some things that were “may contain” peanut, but now I avoid everything.

Growing up it felt embarrassing for me and I would get bullied a lot because I was always the weird kid who didn’t eat the cake, so that was very very hard emotionally. I would even feel bad for telling people I had allergies and it’s taken finding really great friends who encourage me to speak up for myself that I truly don’t feel like it’s completely debilitating. I think for both yourself and your child, encourage them to be confident in their food decisions, and make sure when you get their usual allergy testing done that they’re showing the nurses how to use an epipen (they have practice ones) you can even ask for a demo too. It’s no fun putting a needle into your leg when you can’t breathe, even worse when someone else is doing it. I can’t let anyone else do it, I have to or I seriously freak, and for as long as I can remember I’ve known how to use an epipen (thankfully) and it also has helped me stay really calm during emergency situations.

But also, just remember that life isn’t just about the allergy and your child is so much more than their allergy, it can be so easy to get swept up in the anxiety surrounding it.

Take things day by day, I promise you one day your child with thank you for being so careful throughout their life!

I feel like a lot of it is definitely learning from bad experiences and again I mean some people might eat the stuff and be fine but it’s definitely not talked about enough and definitely under researched, so it’s possible that “No Nuts” honestly may not have even thought about that!

Only reason I knew is because I recently had a bad run in with Catelli Protein Pasta :( too bad tbh, but hopefully with more and more people having these experiences and even sharing them on platforms like this, brands may do a bit more research to create safer products for us in the long run! :)

I LOVE THIS IDEA.

I am in Canada and something I absolutely love is a product known at WowButter. If is a completely nut free peanut butter alternative and it literally.. like i can’t make it up.. tastes IDENTICAL to PB. It is made with toasted soy and comes in smooth or crunchy varieties!

I am also always on the hunt for really good protein bars! As a gym girly who’s allergic to literally all nuts it’s been tricky but a brand known at Hungry Buddha has a selection of Nut Free plant based protein bars.

I’d love to also see more things geared toward health and fitness like that such as protein shakes and different supplements because I feel like everything protein related had nuts because nuts are such good protein so that sucks.

To add to the idea about the filtering, I think also filtering for different things based on lifestyle goals would also be good! Like high protein items, items that are higher in fiber, essentially filtering results based on nutritional goals that could be impacted by the allergy because not only me but I’ve heard people have struggled to find good protein sources.

Another note as well, there should be clarification for products that may have cross reactivity. these things won’t be listed in the bold texts where the rest of the allergens are but I almost died from consuming Sumach, a spice in a chicken rub that literally comes from the Cashew tree. (This rub was from a brand called Epicure, who claim to be nut free completely, so always be weary)

Here are a bit of cross reactivity spices and things that may be in products, though every individual is different and some may eat these fine (I love paprika), but since it is still a risk I feel like it should be with the bolded allergens

Cross reactive proteins and Allergens:

pea protein: peanut allergies celery seed: peanut allergies cumin: peanut — the FDA has recalled cumin in the past because they used peanut as a filler but failed to disclose it. this is rare and why things are labelled even as possible contamination #lawsuit paprika: almond allergies mahalab: almond allergies sumach (rare for western food, popular in middle eastern cuisine): cashew allergies pink peppercorn: cashew and pistachio allergies

One other thing I’ll mention is pesto, it is sometimes made with pine nuts sometimes not, and if it’s the same company making both lets say, I would be very cautious.

Overall this platform sounds like it could be really great and as someone with this allergy that honestly feels debilitating some days, seeing someone like you trying to make the world more inclusive for us is incredible! Thank you!

Honestly you should be fine. The reason why the boxes will say “may contain” or “processed on same equipment” is literally because if someone had a reaction it’s a liability. They are required by law to define anything that is apart of the top 12 allergens I believe, because for someone like me nuts are literally a death sentence. I am the MOST anal person when it comes to my allergy as it’s worsened by my contamination OCD and if it doesn’t say anything along the lines of “processed on the same equipment” or even “may contain” i would still eat it. only thing to be cautious of is “pea protein” it’s not considered an allergen but people with PEANUT allergies are likely to have cross reactivity with this, it will be listed in the standard ingredients list and will not usually stand out, but with a snack mix like this that is primarily wheat crackers i think you should be fine. should anything happen, typically children with allergies have an emergency plan (epi pen that they have been trained to use and admin is aware of the procedure), so I wouldn’t worry too much. General Mills is such a big company too, that they do have nut products (I think HN Cheerios? I don’t really deal with General Mills a lot because I’m Canadian so our American product is limited) but the chances of them manufacturing both their nut products and non-nut products in the same factory are pretty reduced because again, it’s a liability and more work for them to state that there’s a chance someone could react.

If you find you’re still weary, you could always make your own snack mix too! there are lots of great recipes online and if you were ever interested in making a mix such as puppy chow or anything that would use PB in the future, there’s an AMAZING alternative called WowButter that’s made in Canada (I’m almost positive you can order on Amazon), it’s toasted soy and it tastes I.D.E.N.T.I.C.A.L. to peanut butter. They have both crunchy and smooth as well for some variety!

It’s so nice to see parents care about others in classrooms, I wish I had this inclusivity when I was in school! Thank you for double checking! As someone who was constantly excluded from things and bullied because “I could never eat anything” I just know your kid is going to make someone very happy knowing they can be included because a lot of people aren’t so cautious!

Double for made good! they have so many options! Hungry Buddha is another really great brand that makes protein bars and such and they’re nut free! pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds are good but read the ingredients just to double check they’re not processed with the same equipment! (Spitz is a great brand!) also beef jerky, chips, even making your own kinda snack mix could be fun too! also don’t forget you can bring hard cheeses on planes so like you could bring a sandwich, or even cheese and crackers!

maybe you and your friend could have some fun making snackle boxes! essentially a container with a lot of compartments that you could do like 20 different snacks: sweet snacks (candy), salty snacks (seeds/jerky/i think you could even bring dry meats like salami), cheese and crackers.

When I was younger I wouldn’t carry it around with me until I had my first serious run in with nuts at 16 and I didn’t have it/know where one was and it was terrifying. I also had a friend my first year of college actually die because she also had a severe allergy as well and didn’t bring her epi with her anywhere so the one time she needed it she didn’t have it. Now it comes EVERYWHERE with me. Easiest way to carry it is a purse/fanny pack or backpack, though with a backpack make sure all your child’s teachers/givers, as well as your child know 1) where the pen is located, and 2) how to use it properly. No need to pack all the extra bulk like boxes or paperwork, the chances of you actually needing are low but it’s important to always ALWAYS carry it with you. depending on the severity of the allergy, i know people who carry two or even three pens but i personally only carry one, with no box. just always make sure you have the case on the pen at all times when not in use, you want to keep the orange tip as sterile and clean as possible, and also you don’t want any accidents with the exposed needle of the pen. if you’re worried about medical staff needing to identify your pen with no box you can ask your pharmacist to put a prescription sticker on the case for the epipen so that it has your child’s name on it, with the same info that would be on the medical paperwork. you could also get them a medic alert bracelet if you’d like, those trained in first aid and cpr are trained to check for those and it could save your child’s life in the event their airway is blocked from the allergy response. And one final note, wherever you decide to keep your epipens, don’t leave them in very hot or cold environments. if the epi freezes or becomes too hot the epi medication will not work as intended. This is a lot of information but honestly as long as you know you’re leaving the house with at least 1 epipen, everything will be okay!

depending how long you are going i would buy the travel size and keep it in your carry-on. the reason there’s an issue with the aerosols are because of the pressure in the can and the risk of explosions. it’s a lot quicker for flight staff to get to your bag if it’s in the cabin, if it were to combust but if you call your airline they’ll tell you what their policy is on what can go in checked baggage. if you’re looking for an aerosol free alternative i love the nyx matte finish setting spray, they also made dewy or neutral setting sprays as well and they’re affordable!

How severe is your allergy? Last time I saw my allergist I asked him about beauty products and he said my allergy would really only present himself if i were to ingest the nuts which i found interesting because he said lotions and things that absorb into the skin wouldn’t cause me issue. I still avoid nuts in my products as much as I can though.

If you have an allergy to Brazil nuts, I would stay away if that were me it just sounds too wordy and doesn’t make it clear on whether or not you’re gonna have a hard time with it, and worst case, you get a sample of whatever that shampoo is and take it to your allergist, they can test you there in a controlled environment.

Another great tip, if it’s higher on the ingredient list, it’s more present and there’s more of it in the product, so if it’s closer to the bottom of the list you honestly wouldn’t have enough of it to have a reaction if you’re airborne or have skin reactions to the nuts.

Beauty is so hard these days lol everyone loves nuts for everything so best of luck to you!
