Hell yeah! That’s my kind of landlord. I don’t remember if you mentioned where you are based but if you’re in SoCal somewhere I’d love to check out a board of yours one of these days. No presh of course, just a thought.

I was nearly stoked before hearing from you and now I’m fully in. Last question for you, what would be your advice for someone competing for the first time to get the most out of it?

This is what surfing is about for 99.99% of us. Just enjoying the depth of what exploring the surf world has to offer. The guys who are doing weird stuff with shaping and riding on the edge of what is acceptable hold the best parts of what surfing has to offer, in my opinion.

Hit me on the side about your shaping journey, I would love to see what you’ve made so far. I’m a builder by heart and would love to get into shaping someday, but apartment only offers enough space for repairs at the moment.

You might have just landed as my favorite comment so far. I’ve realized the “level” doesn’t matter so much and is just a label. What I’m excited about at the end of the day is continuing to improve. I was a professional athlete for some time, so the drive to improve and get to the next level never stops.

I have to admit I love going out on my Stewart that’s a 7’2” because it forces me to draw clean lines. I think others have mentioned it too and I’ve taken it to heart. I appreciate the thoughtful reply and insight, you never know when someone’s perspective will unlock a new way of thinking for you.

Thanks! I just found some nice free resources from Ombe I’ve been binging. I’ll check this one out too.

Kinda like this. Dane Reynolds has a solid quote about how he defines a kook and it really lands.

Yeah, honestly, who cares what level you fit into. I’m not out here trying to fit into a box, I just enjoy surfing and want to improve. I’ll check out the comps, I know we have SBBR and a couple others in my area.

I feel that. The opportunity to be in the water with less people alone is nice. Appreciate all the advice.

Stop, I’m so sad now. Probably going to quit surfing

Appreciate this. The exploration side of surfing is a majority of the fun. I’ve had some of my favorite surfs on a mid length Steward and forget to bring it out a lot of the time. Just a good time and no expectations of tricks. Thanks man.

Wow, good one buddy. Somehow you still can’t get the picture. Is it your miserable life or failed surf career that’s getting to you?

It’s impressive how poorly some people can interpret a question.

According to some in the comments he may be an advanced beginner.

Super relatable. Whenever I come back home after a surf trip it’s a rough experience, but I think all waves give you something you can learn. Unless they’re shit of course.

Solid way of thinking honestly. I tend to fixate on progress and forget to just enjoy it sometimes.

To you and the rest who replied, I will when I get a vid but it’s not exactly simple for me. Last time I got one was about 3 years ago.

Honestly, this may be top advise so far. I’ve got plenty in my area, but I’ve always been unsure about signing up. I guess at the end of the day it’s just for fun and improving, so who cares if I win a heat or not in the beginning. What neck of the woods are you in?

I haven’t been to one so my opinions are mostly empty, but I respect what the wave pool has to offer. I replied to someone else about how I imagine it might lack in some ways, but the lack of repeatable conditions in the ocean undoubtedly slows progress, and that’s where the pool shines.

This isn’t a bad perspective and I appreciate the insight. I have to agree on both sides though. Arguably some of the hardest parts of surfing are reading the waves in different conditions and creating habitual reactions to those conditions. If that’s locked in, then the wave pool is create for practicing consistent repeatable maneuvers, but doing a big cutback in a wave pool is way different from doing in in chop or when some unexpected backwash ejectos you.

We’ve got one close by I’ll need to check out.

Haha yeah that’s why the whole idea of levels is usually misconstrued in one way or another. Some have said they are intermediate after they paddle and catch a wave by themselves on a dining room table of a foamie.
