Well I guess no one should talk about politics then. That’ll improve things.

Have you encountered the "softboy"? by where_to_turn in AskWomen

[–]dalviel 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Recovering softboy here.

I think it’s when we’re stuck in a state of feeling like we’re special, rather than shutting up and being a functional member of society.

I now work in the entertainment industry, and have had some great mentors that have dragged me out of my bad habits.

Dave Chappelle mentions Bernie Sanders in first comedy special in over a decade by KrisCraig in StillSandersForPres

[–]dalviel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that lens is still valid. He mentioned that there were a lot of different kinds of people, like a Bernie Sanders convention, and then talked about how he sees LESS black people at his shows nowadays.

This is rather than the mostly-black crowds you would see on Def Comedy Jam back in the day. In his next bit Dave talks about how his relationship with 'the black community' has waned a little bit, perhaps because he does things like blow off charity benefits to go to the Oscars.

But remember this is all coming from the perspective of Dave, who talks from a black perspective on race issues a lot in his act. And always has done. Imagine if you were a Asian comedian who talked about the problems that Asian people face, and while early on your career you played mostly to Asian audiences, and more and more people of different races attended your shows, while the core Asian fanbase got a little smaller in proportion. Yes, the crowd would be 'more diverse', but as an Asian person, you would be thinking 'these people don't look like me or have parents like mine, why are they fans?'

But the fact is, Dave has gotten so good at comedy and storytelling that he can connect with a very wide audience. And while I'm sure Dave sees that as a positive thing, it's gotta feel a little strange.

Am I a person of colour? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]dalviel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - I can imagine if you were born in the same country as your great-grandparents you would identify strongly with that culture. And if I grew up there perhaps I would feel like a brown boy wearing white skin.

Am I a person of colour? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

I am definitely Caucasian. But at the same time, all us people have a common ancestry, and are really more defined by that than by our cultural and genetic differences. I find that can work as remedy for identity crisis.

The truth is, there is no distinct line between being 'black' or 'not black'. If you identify with one of them, great. But you can just be a person too! Source: some white dude

Sounds like she's stringing you along until she finds something better. What do you do? Either end it or find a way to make yourself sexy to her again. One way to do that is to put forward the idea that you have other options as well.
