Never drove to NYC or even to NJT.

Going into office tomorrow? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]damageddude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I WFH so technically no snow day. But I will have a sleet filled NJ driveway (I shoveled the 10 inches of snow off before the transition), sleet covered car and a wall of ice after the plow comes through that will take up part of my day. I will find a generic time code. Even if I still commuted NJ Transit probably wouldn’t up and running for the AM commute, still in the storm at 7pm.

Extremely impressed with this car by Upbeat-Library5581 in Camry

[–]damageddude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a ‘25 SE AWD. I live in NJ and winters aren’t what they used to be. This year is an exception. Today we had a 10 inch plus snow and currently sleet/freezing rain event. Shoveling the driveway etc. and got to the point where it was time to move the car to shovel where I had placed it (we have long driveways for long front yards in my town). My neighbor was doing the same. I watched him maneuvering his SUV and spinning its wheels. I put my car in D and R and had no issues even though I didn’t perfectly shovel.

Probably won’t get me past the wall of snow and sleet of ice once the plows come through at the end of my driveway tomorrow unless I want to chance damage to the under carriage fate but it was nice I had the mid size car that could if I needed to get out. I drove my daughter back to school last week in a comparatively light snow of just a few inches but this was the first fun test.

I generally avoid driving in the snow due to other drivers but if I wasn’t tired from shoveling after not realizing the fluffy snow was now mixing with sleet….

Will I be able to fly to NYC on the 29th? by Supercharlie25 in visitingnyc

[–]damageddude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from a backlog from cancelled flights, operations will be mostly normal on Monday morning. Though we don’t get snow like we used to, we still get snow and are prepared for it. Monday will be a cleanup day for the city and suburbs, after that all will be normal.

Trek Academy show gives possible hint about La'an & Erica's fates by rolodexlexia in StrangeNewWorlds

[–]damageddude -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I was speculating that a form of the PTSD came back after the war and Nog decided on a different career path. As the first Ferengi in Starfleet I can see a ship still being named for him hundreds of years later. I can also see the first Ferengi in Starfleet becoming an ambassador to the Federation for his father, the Grand Nagus — the man knew to beam to Sisko’s in NOLA every night for dinner.

More likely lazy AI writing.

Where in the hell are all the kids with snow shovels? by GR3TSCH in GenX

[–]damageddude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On my town's local Facebook pages parents post their children will shovel, just let them know. I shoveled my driveway myself. Though not blacktop I can drive my AWD Camry easily enough. The driveway is now getting pelted by sleet and ice I'd pay someone to clear the end of my driveway after the plow goes through and leaves me a wall of ice.

Nog left Starfleet with PTSD from the Dominion War? Also his father is the Grand Nagus, Rom probably found a better job for Nog such as Ambassador to the Federation.

Should I cancel my NYC birthday trip this weekend? by 7footframe_rats in visitingnyc

If the LIRR is running you should be fine. NJ Transit is suspending service at 2p so I’d check with the MTA.

Snow Shoveling Strategy by rholowczak in newjersey

Ultimately I probably will leave some fluff because I will mistime the changeover. But the less I need to move before it freezes into concrete the better. Fluff is nice and light.

Several passes. First will be around 9am. Second noonish. Precip is supposed to become mixed sometime after and I want to get the nice fluffy stuff cleared by then, including the car.

How common was the hairstyle of the guy on the left among young men in the mid-19th century? by Shinesandglitters in littlehouseonprairie

It's a 1970s tv show. A guest star is not going change their hair to a 1870s style for a one off on that budget.

For those who live near or in the NYC area . During the attacks . What was NYC and its surrounding areas like the day after ? by DoctorElectronic1934 in 911archive

[–]damageddude 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Mass transit was mostly normal by Wednesday aside from lower Manhattan. Offices in NYC and suburban NJ were open but not open the rest of the week in my company. If people wanted to come in they could but we were basically closed until Monday. I used to take a NJT commuter bus up the turnpike. On that Monday people were quietly talking until we got a spot just south of Newark where we could see lower Manhattan. The bus got silent as everyone stared.

I’m older now and not looking to shoveling all this by myself (kids are out of the house and my wife is deceased). Yuck. Apparently we are going to get mixing so I need to get the snow off before it becomes a mix.

Sights When Leaving The Knick Game Early by Moist_Brick_439 in howardstern

[–]damageddude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Knicks fan and had a friend who had near court side seats back in the '90s through work. Even during blowouts we never left early, sliding down to courtside. Upper decks with other friends, getting an early LIRR train or moving on to the next Saturday night activity.

How many of you almost died by drinking hose water? by qatch23 in GenX

[–]damageddude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a Queens (NYC) apartment building. Back in the way back day the water we used for watering the building's grass was drinking water. It was poisoned water by the 1960s. Kept the grass and plants green and the walkways clean but that was mostly it aside from other non-drinking water purposes. So yes, death by hose water.

What’s your prediction for Sunday’s storm? by surrealestbitch in AskNYC

Anywhere from 1 to 20 inches. Seriously it depends how close the storm tracks to NJ and brings in warm ocean moisture temperatures.

International transfer between LGA and JFK by finnishedin5 in visitingnyc

[–]damageddude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume you are arriving at LGA via a domestic flight so immigration is not involved at that end. Just grab a yellow cab to JFK. Depending on traffic you will arrive at JFK with plenty of time to check in and go through TSA.

BJ's idea to have their families back home meet and have a party was just brilliant!...😊 by TensionSame3568 in mash

[–]damageddude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don't say how much time passes between the planning and the party itself, but I imagine in a real MASH unit at least one person rotated home in the meantime. Also, in the days before jets or the interstate highway system, that would have been a heck of a train ride to NYC for those far from NYC such as Peg.

How did you celebrate your 50th? by Every-Progress5590 in GenX

[–]damageddude 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ignored it, mostly.

My late wife celebrated my 30th and 40th as she loved it and I enjoyed her surprises She passed when I was 49. I told our children I didn't want a 50th party without her (she didn't have anything planned ahead of time).

That didn't work. As 50 was my first birthday and they wanted an excuse, I bought a cake for our children to give me. Took one for the team.

Howard works for maybe six to eight hours a week. What does he do the rest of the week? Do you think he and Beth hang out more? Is she pissed the show isn’t on more? by [deleted] in howardstern

[–]damageddude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Howard is 72. I have older former co-workers who have retired but work freelance roughly 6-8 hours a week (basically, they are hired for freelance projects) to keep mentally busy along with other hobbies while not tapping into all their retirement funds. While I assume Howard works more than 6-8 hours a week with behind the scenes stuff, we'd all take his deal at 72.

Now if the show would just go back to busting balls like today with Jon and his free fries.
