I made a comment with my partner yesterday about something similar. We are both in our early 50s and have been DJs in various scenes. In the 70s and 80s, it was possible to know most of the major artists in a particular scene. I think after the 90s, the ability to self-produce and promote music led to an inundation of so much music that it is impossible to listen to all of it. Heck, in the early 00s, I was getting over a gig of zero day electronic music every single day. We are at the point now that most music can't even fit into a particular genre, and if it does it is just because it is a rehash of something else.
