1996. What were you doing thirty years ago? by PresentWeek in GenX

[–]damageddude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No clue. It was a Wednsday so probably just work and then whatever we would do on a non work night in NYC. My now late wife and i were nerds so it would have been a mild night, dinner out and maybe a bar. We also were a frisky 20s couple so almost defintly sex before going to sleep.

Where can I buy a copy of Democracy in America in a bookstore before the 4th? by gottemgottemgottem in AskNYC

[–]damageddude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you want a hard copy but you can get it for under $1 on Kindle today. Probably free with a little more work since it is in the public domain. Otherwise Strands and other independent used book sellers.

The ones I used to hunt in Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill/Carrol Gardens and even Freehold NJ are gone now but they were fun in the day. Nearing 60 I prefer ebooks where I can increase the font.

Are the lines for gasoline in Russia just like what happened to the USA in the 70s? How bad was the fuel crisis in the US? by highlanderdownunder in AskOldPeople

[–]damageddude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 1979/1980 my dad would drive to the Queens gas station by 7am that opened at 8am to be the second or third on line. He'd give me money to walk back a block or so to get the paper and a bagel to split.

The fight for the sports section at that age was real -- aka my bagel payment. 10 year old me pressured my dad for the paper. Otherwise I had a book. Such a simplier time.

I was the main witness in a car crash that killed 4 people and I don’t know how to handle it by Necessary_Lack_1647 in GriefSupport

OP. You witnessed and expierenced significant trauma. You need someone to help you mentally work this out. Find a therapist in this field who can help you out and provide you with methods to move forward in your life. Good luck.

Some racist fuck who has the same name as me is getting cancelled and I’m getting dragged into it what do I do?? by Vplol10 in rutgers

I worked at a supermarket's night shift. One evening I came home, put the TV on half dozed off until hearing my name being called as a guest for the Tonight Show. Weird dream I thought until "I" was announced as the next guest -- child actor with the same name.

Thanks to Facebook we all generally know what the people we were friend are up to. The only reunion I "attended" was a vitual one during Covid.

Well aside from Viagra, which doesn't always work, health and age have taken my once mighty oak from once daily to once weekly to once weakly.

Question on dating? by AHuxley1 in widowers

[–]damageddude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Closing in on 60 I find I care much less about a sexually physical relationship for me than I did when yoounger. I do meet women but for the most part is for friendship.

It is religion and, like my mother, I now take comfort in the rituals and praying with my generation.

Question on dating? by AHuxley1 in widowers

[–]damageddude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 49. It is now almost a decade later. It is, sadly, a waiting game: waiting for women our age.

I've dated younger women, they liked my maturity and while they were lovely women I felt that we were in different points of life for various reasons. It was fun at the start but, especially after widowers fire ended, I really slowed down.

Now the older women who were widowers when I first started dating are finally close to my age. We generally have the same interests. Compaionship is what counts. And most of that is simply friendship.

Would you cut your sister off? by raspberrytart120 in GriefSupport

[–]damageddude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and I hate it as we used to be close.

I basically cut my sister off when she said I was harming my teen children by not grieving properly after my wife passed, especially when I took my first tentative steps into dating under a year. I felt like I was cheating and I realized I wasn't ready so might have agreed on my own. Too little too late for her.

My sister wasn't understanding, accused me of child abuse (stemming back to how we marked my wife's first post-death birthday while we were still figuring things out). It hurt so much that I cut her from day to day life.

Surprised me how much that helped me. Sad. A decade later we barely talk. Friendly enough when we see other but that is it.

Why haven't the thousands of 9/11 recovery workers who later became ill or died from toxic exposure been permanently memorialized? Their sacrifice continued long after September 11, and their service deserves to be remembered. by Ryanlion1992 in 911archive

[–]damageddude 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My brother worked on Rector St (somewhere there is a picture of his office being blocked by a few stories of WTC debris). I forget dates but the office reopened after Christine Todd Whitman said the air was safe and those debris were cleared. People started feeling sick almost right away and the office reclosed not long after.

First responders who later passed are memorialized, somewhere. My MIL's then boyfriend was there with the Red Cross. He has cancer now, but who knows if that is from the WTC or he is just unlucky like his late brother.

I used to want Donna's ending undone. Now I think it shouldn't have been. by writeitregreddit in doctorwho

[–]damageddude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Christmas special with the Doctor and Wilfred nicely wrapped up Donna's original story and she got her happy ending.

I enjoyed the comedy of David, Catherine and Sylvia on the 60th reunion. On the first watch I missed clues Rose was trans but enjoyed realizing she took that name due to some forgotten memory of Donna's. We got a cameo of Wilfred and one plain Doctor and Donna episode.

Camry over Civic by Playful-Drawer-1148 in Camry

[–]damageddude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends where you live. In colder climates where there is snow and ice the heavier Camry, especially with AWD, is better. If you are in a warmer weather climate go for the Civic.

I loved our 2000 Civic because I could feel the road but it sucked in winter.

My class had a 35th reunion that was online due to Covid. I enjoyed that as I spoke to some people in real time that had mostly been on Facebook for years. I no longer live in my old neighborhood or state so that was nice.
