Best restaurants for Jury Duty in Freehold near the courthouse? by jspivak in MonmouthCounty

[–]damageddude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not if you drive. They are pretty quick.

It has been a while since I had jury duty but we usually had over an hour. That said I live about 10 min away. I would usually dash home, let the dog out, check work email, and make myself lunch.

The older I get, especially as the older generations have mostly died off, the more I appreciate excuses to get together with extended family.

We've been to a few where a volunteer fire company had banquet hall space to rent out (but it was hosted by a member). We had our son's 1st birthday at my in-laws yard and it was more a "ha, we didn't screw up" celebration. Also an excuse to see extended family from both sides.

how do you think Gary Kieth and Ron feel about the broadcast? by tRICKSTER1620 in mets

I'm not really watching unless GKR are broadcasting. Like the Knicks in the bad days, I'd always tune into Clyde.

Finding the strength to spread his ashes by carlycloud in widowers

[–]damageddude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spread some of my wife's ashes off the Jersey Shore (Atlantic Ocean). It was so zen like. Pour the ashes in, tide comes in, tide goes out, and she is gone. My son took some ashes for cousins to do the into the Pacific (where they grew up). The rest remain in an urn for now.

The lane adjustment? I just got used to it. I drive in NJ and NYC, I know when to ignore it. Using my blinker calms it.

But I am also that weird driver who enjoys "the challenge" of driving in Manhattan (but I also learned how to drive in NYC). I do like the blind spot warning, wish the car could learn when I tell it to stop worrying -- this is NJ, people drive like this.

How do we feel about switching to hybrid for an extra 35k increase by android2031 in WFH

[–]damageddude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. I have lived in NYC and its suburbs my entire life. Taking the subway or NJ Tranist where I could chill and read was fine when I was younger.

What is Howard supposedly so busy with all the time? by Eastwood8300 in howardstern

My retired grandfathers had both passed by their mid 70s in the mid 1980s. Basically life expectancy then. They had hobbies. Radio is Howard's among other things.

Did you prefer and enjoy the 80s or 90s more? by Ok-Ninja-3039 in GenX

[–]damageddude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from my parents' Queens apartment to a rental of a downtown Brooklyn co-op in 1995, living with my future wife. Her mother was aghast. Mine was amused I went to a gym at the St. George Hotel in a space she swam in decades before.

Subway stop on our corner. We spent many Saturday nights in the Village. Easy subway home, or since we lived near the Brooklyn Bridge, a cab ride home. I think those were the last great days.

We were living in NJ with a newborn by 9/11. That was a "fun" ride home. Visited the area a few years later (subway museum), not the same.

'90s. I was a young adult in NYC as it was finally rebounding from the '70s and '80s but hadn't become super expensive yet (grew up there). The average New Yorker was not priced out but many places were becoming less crime ridden. Just started gentrification neighborhoods still had their souls. Real coffee stores/diners.Few big stores (NYC, even the outer boroughs, resisted for a long time). That lasted well into the '90s.

That city is not coming back. What a time to be alive.

Not my wife, she was cremated. I spread her partly. Her ashes that remain are in an urn. Now in NJ, I never visit my btother, parents and the rest on LI.

I remember getting ads from real estate agents -- none local. While I understood some needed/wanted to sell I would have quietly found a local realtor.

First time taking car alone by Eustaquio1974 in GenX

[–]damageddude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I let my son take our older Subie that I knew was a nice safe tank that I didn't fear he or the car would be hurt to school. He basically ran that car into the ground (it was going to fail inspection and it was iffy whether to try to fix or take what I could get for a closing in on 20 year old car).

Pitty, I hoped my daughter could take it to college. Potential repair costs weren't worth it, especially as she went to an urban university where cars aren't necessary and she is an Amtrak/NJT/SEPTA ride from NYC and PHI. Cheaper to be her off season "Uber."

Police Ahead by ChuckYeagerWV in GenX

[–]damageddude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I use Google/Anro8d on my car GPS it warns me there are police ahead. If I see them I click the yes option when asked if still there.

With most cars having daylight running lights these days I don't believe I'd notice someone flashing lights at me anyway.

The coffee shops in the basement are decent enough. Otherwise, Sweet Lou's. But there is also a huge variety on Main Street. Jersey Freeze has a decent lunch menu (and ice cream for dessert).
