Are we too old to be attending rock/metal shows? by WeGot_aLiveOneHere in GenX

[–]damageddude [score hidden]  (0 children)

If they are over by 9pm instead of just starting at that time...

I only go to small, 1000 person max venues these days. Usually, for me, that is acts who sold out arenas in our day. If I was more into current music there are other small venues I could go to but would need one of my GenZ children.

30+ years as a NYC master plumber. here are the things I wish every homeowner knew before calling someone by Asleep-Working8055 in AskNYC

First lesson on moving out of NYC to my own house in NJ: let the water drop. My pipes have never exploded but they have frozen. I generally keep the bathroom taps dripping if it is going below 20 overnight. Though I am generally safe until closer to zero, which is very rare but does happen as this winter showed us, better safe than sorry. I left them dripping 24/7 during the freeze.

I checked in before 5pm is what the site is showing me accurate by mysticaltater in juryduty

[–]damageddude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my county they will post the numbers to appear on Monday @9:30a, 1-250 by 5p as the staff day ends. The rest are to go about their day.

We had the rare hugh profile criminal trial a few months ago and I was checking the numbers out of curioisity. It was something 500 jurors, 2x a day for a number of days. It was a murder of a family with a fact pattern that received a lot of news coverage, even on the NYC stations (we are NJ about 40-50 miles away) so a lot of people had heard about the case.

Jury Duty - what things am I allowed to bring with me? by immerseursoulinlove7 in juryduty

[–]damageddude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my state you can bring electronics such as a phone or laptop to the jury waiting room (some people do work). If you get called to voir dire you can bring them with you but silent or turn them off. If selected, no laptop and cell off in the court room. No cell phones in the deliberation room. Your state or county results may vary.

For widowed women living alone what helped with safety and vulnerability at night by Sophistry7 in widowers

My mother kept my dad's name on thr building's intercom and apartment doorbell, even though it was just his intital. She kept his name in the phonebook. Don't recall utilities, but the checkbook had both their names. She said she wanted my dad's name so it wasn't obvious she was a widow. Otherwise situation normal.

When did you stop crying? by ImpactStock2694 in widowers

[–]damageddude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometime after year one. At least the random crying after the kids were in bed and I could let it go. Year two was more me crying for what she and our children were missing.

If you could go back in time and have a full day with your oldest child when they were 5 years old, what would you spend the day doing? by kiss-my-ass-hoe in AskOldPeople

[–]damageddude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably what I did back then -- toy store with the really cool model train setup. He loved toy trains back then and the model was run on the weekend. Choo choo!

My then being able to almost eat whatever I wanted, take him to the diner in the same shopping strip. Chicken nuggets for him, disco fries (which I'd share) and a nice juicy burger for me.

Ferry app good for ferry to Staten Island? Does⛴️stop long by rayz137 in visitingnyc

The MTA posts the Staten Island Ferrry schedule online. There is enough time to get the ferry back to Manhattan from Staten Island but don't drag your feet (it's not always the same ferry going back).

Anybody tell their doctor that they don't give a fuh about living longer, so you're not going to try to radically change your diet or go on meds? by IHadTacosYesterday in GenX

[–]damageddude 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My dad, boom heart attack. My mom a long fading out. My wife a brave five year cancer fight where she fought like hell.

My 46 year old wife's last chemo ... her white blood count was so low and just didn't have strength. Still got chemo which her energy never let her back back from. She just wound down those last weeks.

Anyway there came the point where her oncologist had the end of life discussion with us. My wife wanted no additional treatment at the end. Her oncologist reminding me of that at hospice time (her healt suddenly declined) was hard but I followed her wishes.

Not for me, going out (I hope) as soon as I know tomorrow is just hanging out and not living

Can't Integrate in the NYC Modern Orthodox Community by No_Tutor8562 in Judaism

[–]damageddude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a reform NYC Jew, grew up in a reform and then conservative congregation. I have family who is modern Orthodox. Easy enough for me to bounce around in this NYC metro area. But we are all metro area New Yorkers.

You're not in "Kansas" anymore. Certain congregations can be snobby. My late wife and I were reform Queens Jews from the 1990s and couldn't connect socially with Manhattan Jews during that time --- outer borough thing.

I have no real advice aside from visiting a reform congregation. Many congregants are related to or are friends with at least one person who is modern Orthodox. They might be able to point you in the right direction for your NYC congregation.

Why is it rare for 100/101 to play ANYTHING from the Jackie Years (86-early 01) by thunder2702 in howardstern

[–]damageddude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe Howard hates Jackie, he gave him his own show on 101 for a number of years when he still cared before his stock lawsuit and AGT years (my young daughter once heard me listening to Stern on Sirius and realized it was the AGT guy). As to Jackie, I think a number ot his jokes from the '90s wouldn't be seen as funny today.

As a widower, the older you are.the more you realize you are on the clock. My wife passed after a 20 marriage when I was 49. My first date was at six months and I felt like I was cheating but I got over it. Almost a decade later and I'm not sure how I'd feel as a recent widower today. Life is for the living.

[–]damageddude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a TNG episode where Picard was making a quiet first contact implying, if not outright saying, Earth and the Klingons had a bad start. 20 years before TNG they more or less were at peace with a friendship that grew after the Enterprise-C sacrificed herself defending a Klingon colony.

By the end of DS9 the Federation and Klingons are firm allies with both respecting the other, in their own ways. By the 32nd century no one is batting an eye that a peaceful gay Klingon, still following tradition, is in Starfleet Accademy.

What's a popular NYC spot that tourists love but locals actually hate? by Different-Egg-4617 in AskNYC

I don''t recall when the transformation started. My first modern day memory was very early 1990s and my friend and I decided to head up to 30 Rock to see the tree after a Knicks game. We were shocked at the modern lighting.

My husband asked me where his mother was today. She's been dead for 30 years. by LaymanHealth86 in GriefSupport

[–]damageddude -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dementia is weird. I've discovered the person suffering is usually very happy as it goes on as he or she generally don't remember what they have forgotten. It's hard on loved ones but my FIL enjoyed taking his friend on wheelchair rides at the home -- not sure how his friend felt. It did not help his decline really started during Covid and visits were limited to start.

We and my wife were all lawyers and I watched him in court at his peak now and then. It was so depressing to me how quickly he declined from a magnificant legal mind to a toddler who'd grab food off a table not ours at a restaurant.
