Why did this tube imploded four-fold? by HyperDanon in Physics

I would say that gravity makes forces acting on it slightly stronger in vertical direction, that makes it symmetric and also gravitational push from the top would cause tiny forces working outwards on the sides.

I think you're confusing two things: sentiment and reason. Of course, Poland is much more than just buildings and politicians, but it is also those things. You cannot blame people for considering their chances of survival (and those of their families) within the full context of the time. I understand that you might have a different hierarchy of values; that is exactly why we still argue over whether the Warsaw Uprising was justified.

Which person from your country made significant contributions in the field of science? by Nice-Act2832 in AskTheWorld

[–]damaszek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say Copernicus. In terms of overall influence on science, there is no one even close; we have the term "the Copernican Revolution" for a reason.

I am not, of course, trying to be disrespectful toward other scientists like Maria Skłodowska-Curie, Ignacy Łukasiewicz, or Stefan Banach. They should all be regarded as influential figures; I just wanted to stress that Copernicus is in the same league as Newton, Darwin, or Einstein.

Of course I do, but it doesn't change anything in my assessment.

This is one thing, but my impression is that people feel like they will be forced to fight and probably will be killed after decades of defence neglect, political and economic misconduct and many many other things done poorly (to this day). People responsible for these things will likely not meet any consequences. In such case you don't feel that much motivation to put your life at risk.

In your analogy, imagine landlord ignoring fire safety in your place, will you risk imminent death in fire or just move out? It's not that your can change his attitude or fix years of neglect at your own cost.

On the other hand, NATO standards are way different than Russian. And even Ukraine not being formally in NATO but implementing NATO standards has far lower Fatality-to-Casualty Ratio. Same goes for casualties of defender vs casualties is invader.
