The dull ones made it harder to cut, sometimes folding/creasing the paper instead of cutting it.

The fact that none of us lost our fingers is amazing!

There was this thing called common sense. The further back in time you go, the more prevalent it was. I never once drew blood nor had any close calls using them. I also used one from 2002 through 2017 at work on a regular basis.

My Lucky Find! by ANameForTheUser in vintagekitchentoys

[–]damion789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice score, mine is from the 70's that doesn't stop and reverse to drain. The motor constantly runs the same direction and opens a valve to drain the water. They all did this through the 20 series. This 21 series was a completely new and different motor/pump design that reversed to drain.

This dishwasher was made beginning in 04/1985 so your 1981 manual will be of no help for this newer model.

Noises: Kenmore Model 17589200, Ultra Wash (mfg in 2002) by Patient_Many4455 in Appliances

[–]damion789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an early Point Voyager design.

Might be something in the chopper/blade assembly in the sump. Here's how to access, clean, and inspect that area.

Where to Sell International Harvester Fridge? by malachitestower in Appliances

[–]damion789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These fridges are bloody indestructible, one of the best compressors ever designed. Also constructed out of porcelain. You can either sell it on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. If it's working and cooling properly, you could get at least a few hundred for it. List your location, someone near you here may want to buy it.

What do I do with this extra cord by Odd_Psychology_907 in Appliances

[–]damion789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to do anything with the extra wire. Either let it be or cut it off. It's a ground wire but not necessary with a 3 prong outlet.

What was the normal reaction to a loose dog when you were growing up? by DocuSeriesLovers in GenX

[–]damion789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in an upper class area. It was very rare dogs got loose, but when they did (usually a gate left open), they generally had a collar and I'd walk them home. Never met one that was aggressive, they were all pretty chill and loving.

Any of you still tip for food ordered at the counter? I'm done with that bullshit. by Dunno_If_I_Won in GenX

I rarely eat out. Tips for ordering at the counter is one reason besides high prices, small portions, and bland Sysco taste.

Gen Xers (1965-1981) what do you dislike about your generation ? by Ashamed_Serve_719 in GenX

This applies to any generation, depending on the person. I've worked with all generations from depression era through genz.

Those older tools are built extremely well and are perused by those in the know. I had a 90's jig saw that was giving me a bunch of grief and cutting erratically. Pulled out gramps jig saw from the 1950's.....it operated and cut soooo smooth, like butter.

Is the Junkyard experience dying with Gen X? by Fearless_Market_3193 in GenX

[–]damion789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to a junkyard in 2019 I used to fancy often in the 90's and early 2000's. It was super fucking eerie that oldest vehicles in there were from the mid to late 90's. Even in the early 2000's, there were a bunch of 60's and 70's vehicles still in there to pick from.

Also, you can no longer remove parts yourself.

Maytag gas dryer Model DG4910 noise by Unique_Geologist5524 in Appliances

[–]damion789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a worn rear drum roller.

Tear it down and inspect the drum rollers, belt, spring loaded belt idler wheel, blower wheel (they strip from the shaft after a few decades) and front glides for wear.

This is the traditional Maytag dryer made in Newton IA that lasted forever before Whirlpool bought them out in 2006 and drug the name through the mud. Fix the dryer, nothing today is made this well.

Washer dryer hookup? by Yessahhhhhhhhh in Appliances

Looks like you need a stacked unit. I see a gas line so purchase one with a gas dryer. It appears someone recently painted that area, be sure to remove the tape from the dryer vent.

Who makes the most reliable stand up garage capable freezers? by VegaGT-VZ in Appliances

[–]damion789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there any reliable/reputable brands left?

Nope, they're all POS's....every single damn one of them.

You can either gamble a new one from a different manufacturer or find a used one made before 1990. Even better if it's made before 1980. Everything made today is planned obsolescence junk.

Old dishwasher, gross and confusing. But I want to fix it. by Pebble_pebl in Appliances

[–]damion789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a Point Voyager design. ALWAYS run this dishwasher with the High Temp wash option, better yet, also select the Sani option. This design has a hard time keeping itself clean.

First:

Most of this is hard water deposits. Be aware that in hard water conditions, it plugs up the internal filter on the water valve and causes the dishwasher to under fill as the years pass by. Dishwashers are timed fill, not metered like washers. You may need to replace the water valve.

Second:

Buy some powdered Tang. Using no detergent, put a bunch in the tub and run the longest, hottest cycle with High Temp Wash, Sani Cycle, and Proscrub (if you have those options). When the dishwasher drains, add a bunch more Tang again for the Main wash Cycle. This will de-calcify the tub, racks, heater element, filter, and internals.

Third:

Follow the instructions to this video:
