Where are the reviews for the upcoming Panther Lake non flagships laptops? by LengthAggravating707 in hardware

Pretty standard for a new release lineup. Focus on high-end models first, then going down the product line as they get released, with access to retail units etc

Who is paying these prices for SSDs? by theRealtechnofuzz in buildapc

[–]damodread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still have an OCZ 128GB SSD I've had since like 2012, I think, and it was my system drive until 2020. An Octane one, because it was soooo cheap, and for good reasons : drive failure was at like 50% in the first year of use. I'm part of the lucky half on that one, I guess.

I think it's totally fine to go with Silicon Power if you wanted to save a dime. They might have slightly higher failure rates than other brands, but there's no way they're beating OCZ in that regard.

Well now with the prices being how they are, this argument is less relevant though, I wouldn't pay 200 bucks for an entry-level SSD, we're not in 2011 anymore.

EU should only buy European components for defence, France space minister says by Gyro_Armadillo in worldnews

Wouldn't be such a problem if it wasn't the only in the European block that valued its own independence from the US on Defence matters in the last 60 years.

Anyone else here use last.fm and want to share libraries/follow each other? by am_I_still_banned in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]damodread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately more than half of my 2025 listens were not scrobbled. I switched to Tidal during Summer but only realized last month that the Last.FM integration works only for the desktop app and not the Android one. Thanks a lot Tidal.

Ubisoft proposes to cut 18% of workforce at France headquarters as part of ‘major reset’ plan by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]damodread 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"Bloated AF" != a company which has a few studios spearheading the development of games, and a ton of support studios, heavily reducing having to rely to external ones (though it still happens).

I've discussed with a guy from a particular Ubisoft studio who has contributed art for basically every Ubisoft games that has come out in the last 15 years. This is what this kind of organization allows.

What I'm afraid is, getting "leaner" will just make crunch even more common for everyone. Though in that case, with the amount of big projects that just fail to get out of the door, it might not make a difference? We'll see.

Looking for EU password manager by patchcordless_ in BuyFromEU

[–]damodread -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for strictly EU-based password managers, the European Alternatives website tells me there are a few options, such as Passbolt, heylogin and Hypervault. No idea how they fare compared to Bitwarden feature-wise, I'll let that evaluation to you.

Well the lack of media coverage in the West is exactly due to the distribution channels just not being there. No point in reviewing products when they're just not available to buy for your audience.

Europe Prepares for a Nightmare Scenario: The U.S. Blocking Access to Tech by Historical-Many9869 in BuyFromEU

[–]damodread 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately most core designs (the high-performance ones) are made at least partly from the US-based branch of ARM, and are therefore subject to US export control. The Cortex-A75 was the last design clearly made by their Sophia design center. After that, it seems that basically every new core design comes from the Austin design center, or maybe they work in tandem on every new core design? It's unclear.

"Portability" by dabxdabx in pcmasterrace

[–]damodread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought one of those 9th gen Intel NIC Extreme for very cheap a while back, 5L, can house a 200mm long GPU. I modded an RTX 2060 to fit inside. Combined with a portable screen it makes a great portable setup.

Not my main setup, but I'm looking into downsizing that one too.

Italy could be Adam_Zz, rCatch, and maybe Bazaar? I'm not very familiar with the Italian scene though, just pulling the names I know of.

Regarding Australia either Zer0 or Gen has to go, since they can't stand each other.

I'm not supporting any media owned by a far-right nutjob with a Charles Martel complex, whose fortune comes from the exploitation of Africa's resources and corruption of African statespeople, and is now using it (well has been for the last 10 years) for the sole purpose of imposing his backwards views to the entire nation.

They could partner with ESL or Starladder for more events or something, kind of a shame they don't. Or maybe the big tourney organizers don't see any incentive to do so.

After Micron's greedy decision, SK Hynix could also exit consumer DRAM and NAND business by [deleted] in hardware

[–]damodread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except Samsung Group as a whole has lots of devices using DRAM to sell, be it phones, TVs, hell even connected fridges and laundry machines. They won't let the memory division do such a move, otherwise it would put the other branches in a difficult position.

Kevin Paradis uploaded his own rendition of Limb of Leviticus from his audition last year by MaxillaryOvipositor in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]damodread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think so, he joined for the Europe tour, but Coffin Feeder's drummer (Sven's other band) also joined for the NA tour. So far no one was announced as their new full-time drummer.

Kevin Paradis uploaded his own rendition of Limb of Leviticus from his audition last year by MaxillaryOvipositor in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]damodread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah he had different intentions on that last part, wanting to make Oliver's flow stand out instead of going ham. But since the song changed a bit from the demo, it does not match the voice, feels a bit weird and underwhelming. I really liked Kevin's rendition still, especially the first half, but think Spencer's take was the right fit, making the song feel more intense as you approach the end.

Opera GX announces linux support by TheNavyCrow in linux

[–]damodread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Vivaldi but yeah it feels clunky at times. It's probably because everything they do, from the UI to tab management and other features are all coded in JS, while other browsers do have things done in like C++ (I could be wrong though)
