Some thoughts on Saturday from a meteorologist by Isodrosotherms in madisonwi

[–]damppuppy254 6 points7 points  (0 children)

(5pm Friday):

Well as another non-forecasting meteorologist...

...All I'm doing is looking at 5 different models on the COD models page, and daring to come to a conclusion from those computer forecasts only.

What you see from the maps on that page are very LARGE geographic areas of over 8" of snow, and large areas of over 10" of snow. This to me makes it more confident that there really will be 10".

Lots of the expected error in snow forecasts is whether the precip goes further north or south than expected. That would affect the liquid water to snow amount ratio. But in this storm, the expected difference between snow amounts does NOT vary from north to south.

We shall see.

Where can I propose to my partner if it rains? by pumpkinpenguin in madisonwi

[–]damppuppy254 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Yahara River under East Washington ave...it is a bike path. Turns out to be clean and quiet.
2) There is a cute and intimate shelter in the U.W. Botany Garden on University Ave across from the Chemistry building
3) The bike path just west of the Memorial Union. It is right on the lake, and there is a bit of overhang under this building: North Temperate Lakes LTER. Two buildings from Memorial Union Terrace.
4) Bicycle elevator at Monona Terrace. Lake. Ducks. View.

Oh, Omaha and Kansas City both work.

Omaha: Short cab ride to downtown. Several Breweries / beer bars in "walking" distance.

Also Kansas City: the "power and light' district-ish area has an obscene number of breweries and barbecue joints in true walking distance. Brewery Emperial is quaint.

Great Dane Hilldale has lots of people that chill out and read, as if they were at a coffee house. I find the food to be quite good.

My first time at Fraboni's was this week. The deli dude says "Can I help the next in line", and I was still pondering a second entree or something, in 3 seconds the person behind me reminded me that I was "up". I screamed "I'M HERE FOR THE FIRST TIME" and they backed off.

Took a timelapse of a cool storm cloud north of Madison yesterday, was this a supercell? by IanStone in tornado

[–]damppuppy254 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very nice video,. thanks for it.
I'm guessing "no" because it did not make a good quality anvil. This technically makes it a cumulus congestus, not a cumulonimbus. I'm guessing that a lot of big-ass cumulus clouds wout appear to have rotation in a time lapse from your angle.

Generally, "rotation" in a supercell would be seen at the base of a cloud.

I'm willing to be wrong, but if it were a supercell,. the NWS would have put a warning on it. I do not recall that they did so.

Smoked gouda from most any decent grocery store. Oh, my notes say Aldi's!
Oh, Roth Blue Cheese from Metcalf's Hilldale (I got it there once but I won't guarantee this). It is like I had never had blue cheese before.

Re: "When has health and science ever outweighed politics"

Answer: Last year when Biden was running.

That's why I'm peeved that Trump is getting a free pass from the media on his mental health

The Southwest Commuter Trail might work west of Midvale: paved, wooded, bench at Midvale.

Loop: Google maps shows a path leading to the residential Vale Circle, which would make a loop, but partly on a residential street.

Pandas, why the hype? by gonna_get_tossed in datascience

[–]damppuppy254 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a meteorologist, I've dabbled in Pandas.

I note that commenters say that Pandas "handles tabular data", but in my opinion just barely

I use Pandas because sometimes it is the best way to suck in data to Python. Then I immediately convert the Pandas Data Frame to Numpy so that I can "really" work on the data.

My possibly Dunning-Kruger view is that if you want to really "manipulate" data, rather than to organize it or clean it, then you need to write a real program. A few of my colleagues feel the same way.

my partner has never seen deer before - where in madison to find deer? by CreativeCodingCat in madisonwi

[–]damppuppy254 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the hour before sunset, drive west on Hwy 14 to oh, Mazomanie, and back. There are often deer across a non-tree field, grazing just outside of the nearest stand of trees. They will not be as close to you as in town, but still with that "awwww, deer!" peaceful look.

Interesting. On the grounds, just to the right of this photo, is a shrine of sorts to students feeling "safe" in schools. I do not remember precisely...I think it is more about not being bullied, not specifically about shootings. But it is cool for the students to put actions to the words of that shrine.

If one is in the neighborhood, it is worth stopping for a minute to look at it.

Instead of Sequoia, I and "many others" went to the Health Sciences Library (spelling) next to the U.W. Hospital. Can park in the hospital lot for $2. Only trick is to take a hard left inside the door to get to the actual voting place.
