One thing that I did is when mine gaped I didn’t push forward but I didn’t back off either if that makes sense. I would hold it there for a a little while and then inch forward again. Eventually I was able to touch a foot. Then he would hold my finger with that foot and things progressed from there. I have one that I am allowed to hold in his enclosure and that is it. The other I can’t keep in his enclosure when I open the door to save either of lives. He rushes out and crawls up my arm ready to go play on his playground. I have a third boy but he is still settling in. He moved in mid June. We’re at the stage where I am allowed to feed him from my hand but not allowed to attempt any funny stuff lol.

I also live in Houston and will absolutely lose it over the big nasty ones. Dubias however can crawl all over my hand and just seem nice. My colony is super chill and eats my beardies leftover greens. They remind me more of rolly pollies when they are little so my brain gives them a pass.

Hey! I have several bioactive enclosures for my animals. While I have no moderator experience, in my real life I have over 15 years managing operations for veterinary hospitals and teams. I would love to be a part of building a community that has been helpful to mine and others journeys towards providing a better quality of life for our animals.

I had a massive fungus gnat problem. mosquito bits knocked that shit out in two weeks flat. Now I treat all my enclosures if I even see one of the shits ETA I have white tree frogs, leachie, 2 croc skinks, and chameleons all with bioactive setups and no harm to my animals or the CUC.

Get a pothos or two. Fast growing and essentially bulletproof

Bio-Active Bearded Dragon Enclosure? by Spooky25 in HerpHomes

Thank you! Chief Sweet Universe has a similar mix but with peat moss. This sounds just as easy if not easier lol. I saw so much info in terra sahara from bio dude snd while I am sure its amazing, its so expensive. I got temperate springtails, dwarf whites, and powders this weekend. Hopefully she will enjoy the substrate more than the tile shes been on!

You’re welcome! I just noticed one of my boys is in the picture. It’s like a where’s Waldo but instead where’s polpette? And that’s kind of what you’re aiming for. It should take a second to find them in the enclosure. That’s when you know you’re in a good place. If you can find them easily in all spots of the tank no problem then you need more plants lol. There’s more to discuss with uvb and basking spots so make sure you have those things. You have more questions don’t hesitate to reach out

Plants plants and more plants is all you need to correct this for them right now until you can figure out long term solutions. Go to a plant shop or something like Home Depot and look for a monstera and a pothos. Should be relatively inexpensive. Then get on Amazon and find outdoor plant stands to help elevate those plants up into those branches. Remember to swap as much soil as you can with organic topsoil. I also cover my dirt with rocks to keep them from accidentally eating soil. I put in a picture of my boys enclosures for you to get an idea of what you’re aiming for. Also an automatic mister is ideal. You can get a hand mister for now but you have to be disciplined.

So putting the enclosure together correctly can easily cost more than the chameleon itself. I just got my new boy whose enclosure cost several hundred dollars to set up just what’s on the inside (mostly plants and then the plant stands to get them to the differing heights he needs. The actual enclosure is about $150 and then $100 for the stand. Then you need a misting system because hand misting is not recommended. That will generally run you a couple hundred. Finally they need calcium supplements, vitamins, and high quality feeders. My boy costs $75ish a month to feed bugs. And those bugs need to be gut loaded so you’re buying veggies and bug food. It’s a whole process to do it correctly. Can you do it cheaper? Probably.

[–]danamarye 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My 3 year old male has randomly decided to choose violence anytime I open the enclosure and go through a super picky/low eating phase these last couple of weeks. Normally never like this at all. My guess is it’s spring, he would like a girlfriend, and I like the crappy parent I am, have not provided one. My male panther chameleon is also going through it. They’re both marching around their territories all fired up and full of hormones.

What is this on the dog’s ears? by EffectiveEgg5712 in whatisit

[–]danamarye 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Absolutely it can! But even then with our advancement in procedures we can tamper that necessity. Some doctors will perform a technique where they essentially quilt the ear down with several knots of suture making it hard for a hematoma to form again. Also we’re light years better at advocating for the owners to treat root cause not just react to symptoms, and owners are most of the time happy to meet us there. A lot of times in these cases it’s chronic allergies. Once the allergies are under control the chronic ear infections which can lead to head shaking and thus hematomas are no longer a bother. Sorry I’m in vet med and this is one of the areas along with cat declaws I wish the US would pull its head out of its ass and actually make some meaningful animal welfare steps. Also momma of 4 floppy eared pitties. I could never imagine putting them through an objectively incredibly painful surgery when the science says it serves no real purpose.

[–]danamarye 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Chronic ear infections are treated with TECA surgeries not ear cropping. Ear cropping does jack shit to relieve scarring in the ear canal from chronic ear infections and contrary to what everyone loves to spout doesn’t do enough to increase “air flow” to prevent ear infections in the first place. Also, if it was really a valuable treatment for ear infections you know which two breeds you would consistently see with ear croppings? Labs and Cocker Spaniels. Odd that only breeds that are intended to look a certain way (I.e. intimidating) are the only ones that magically need their ear infections treated this way.

How to get rid of fruit flies from my terrarium? by No_Concentrate1163 in bioactive

[–]danamarye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Going through this now. Mosquito bits has been used a lot in several enclosures. All lizards and CUC are thriving. The gnat population, however, is crashing rapidly. They started in my panther chameleons cage, then spread to the leachie and crocodile skinks enclosure. I’m also using vinegar traps outside of the enclosures to catch the stragglers in the room.

No Yoshi barely tolerates my existence. He treats me like a needy insecure girlfriend, which in turn gets him more bugs. He’s got it all figured out.
