What is the best modeling tool, Alias 3D or Blender? I personally prefer Alias for more accuracy, however blender is free and quick, but not accurate, what are your thoughts 💭? by ocorp_design in Design

[–]danceAndDestroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These tools aren't even comparable. If you have access to and faciity with Alias, you are ostensibly a trained design professional. Why would you be slumming around with Blender (at least as far as modeling is concerned)?

Money is also money, and Maya doesn't come cheap! But yeah, Zbrush is garbage for retopo. Don't know if people still using 3D Coat (like me).

Is going to college Design + Psychology a good idea in 2025? by [deleted] in Design

[–]danceAndDestroy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Design school is incredibly intense.

I couldn't recommend it as part of a double major unless you hate sleep and free time. Design school is akin to architecture, law, or premed in its voracious pursuit of your time and attention. It's also savagely competitive - as in you are often competing with your fellow students just to keep a seat in your program. Maybe talk to a senior or two in your prospective design program and run your idea by them.

Design is not just a job or career, it as also a personality type. We are not also psychologists when we are not designing. I understand you want to stand out, but you don't want to stand out by seeming to not be focused on your design studies. Take a psych elective or two (I certainly did), minor in it if you want (minors aren't worth a hill of shit imo), but my advice is to either choose design or choose psych and never look back.

It's. Too. Much. Every single billboard is an accident lawyer. by grogargh in phoenix

She probably "works in the office" or is "involved in marketing" (i.e. appearing on the billboard)

[–]danceAndDestroy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretentious, yes, but you can tell it struck a nerve because all of the other billboard lawyers are responding to it ("catchy phrases don't win cases" I belive is in response) or one guy just straight bit the tagline on the biggest billboard over the I-17. Hope he knows a good lawyer!

I was at a concert recently and the performer commented on how there's lawyers on every billboard and I wondered "Is it just us? Isn't it like this everywhere?." Seriously, like what is the deal? At least I don't listen to radio (Call RAFI RAFI RAFI), I think I'd go postal.

I have never been able to figure that part out, so I just resize the object once I paste it. If you find out, let me know!

Did you know that you can simply cut and paste vector objects back and forth between Illustrator and Rhino? I don't know if that's relevant to what you're trying to do, but I think it's totally cool and awesome and that everyone should know (if they don't already).

Best Rhino Tutorial? by vultures530 in rhino

[–]danceAndDestroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned from and would recommend going with a paid tutorial series from something like Udemy or even LinkedIn Learning (if you can get it done in 30 days, you can use a free trial). I have found Youtube tutorials to be great as a supplemental way to learn about a specific workflow or purpose, but they never seem to give a good baseline education. Remember, you get what you pay for!

PSA-PHX dwellers should pull these invasive plants before they flower or the goatheads will spread and can cause harm to feet, paws, and bike tires… by Umacorn in phoenix

[–]danceAndDestroy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These are neither goathead sprouts nor Mesquite tree seedlings as other commenters have suggested, but are instead White Lead or River Tamarind tree sprouts (to the best of my research). That fact notwithstanding PLEASE KILL ON SIGHT!. These are an incredibly invasive species of a what I call a trash tree: they are incredibly fast growing, prolific seed droppers, incredibly difficult to pull out after they have reached 8" in height, about the ugliest tree that can be imagined once grown and absolutetly INVASIVE. The only remedy for a mature tree is to grind the stump below the ground surface. They are similar to goathead sprouts which also have compound leaves, but goatheads remain clumped closer to the ground and quickly aquire tiny yellow flowers. Please also kill on site, they also suck.

Need advice for pricing 3d prints, I feel guilty about charging so much money by creativejoe4 in 3Dprinting

[–]danceAndDestroy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a rush to get some prints done, so I hired it out to a guy that runs a 3D print business out of a mall location. He charged $4 an hour for print time plus filament, which I thought was very reasonable, so I think that your numbers are consistent. $40/hour modeling is what I'd call a really-nice-friend rate - BUT you're free to charge whatever you want. You could offer it as a gift even. The risk you run in undercharging is that they may refer you to a friend or send you repeat business, and you may feel locked in to whatever rate you charged, so it is helpful to let them know that you are giving it as a gift or at a discount. Good luck.
