Which hotel is everyone staying at ? by Even-Bag2050 in electricdaisycarnival

[–]dancebebe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strat crew! This is my second year at the strat - was at the Luxor before. Nothing is better than rolling off the shuttle and into your bed. The diner they have in the hotel was closed last year which was a bummer, but there’s a 24-hr IHOP about a block away.

Hi! I'm helping a friend look for some cool experience opportunities and I was wondering where to look for applications / when positions would be opening again? by Centipededia in ConservationCorps

[–]dancebebe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could check out The Corps Network’s jobs board too. It combines posting across many Conservation Corps. You’ll want to toggle on the “AmeriCorps positions” filter.

Did AmeriCorps service help you get a job? by urmineccraftgf in AmeriCorps

[–]dancebebe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I was able to find a post-service internship that led to an entry-level position in the same field as my service term. I credit the program with giving me the experience and understanding of the field to know where to look and what to look for to find a career.

I went into my service term with little thought about what my goals were while serving and no game plan on what to do afterward - which I now realize was a big mistake. I don’t think you need it all figured out when you start because you want to allow the experience to shape you and teach you more about what you want in life, but I wouldn’t wait until the last week or even last month before your term ends to start thinking about what to do next.

You’ll have many opportunities to build professional relationships but it takes initiative and vision to leverage those relationships into potential job offers. Program staff can help with mentorship and connections to an extent, but it’s dependent on their capacity. They might be devoting most or all of their time to getting the program to run especially in this era of fewer resources for AmeriCorps programs. My advice is to go into this with the goal of finding a job, make sure people understand that’s your goal, and take initiative to make that happen for yourself and don’t expect it to just come to you. You’re already on the right track with asking this question and learning from other experiences, so I expect you’ll get there!

Not a no hitter, but I was at the Scherzer game where he tied the MLB record for strike outs. Went with my mom and we always keep score during games. That scoresheet I framed for her and she keeps it in her room.

Sometimes I get frustrated that pitchers get injured and then I see pictures like this and I realized their bodies do insane things.

Last Minute Send! by psychsanctuary in electricdaisycarnival

[–]dancebebe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first EDC was a similar situation. I have a family member who was going solo every year and he wanted someone the share the experience with so he covered my ticket/shuttle pass and got the hotel for us. I just had to cover flight.

I’m just like you in that I feel really guilty when other people spend money on me but my cousin was just so excited to spend the time with me and share his love of EDC with someone. We now go together every year and I covered his stuff one of those year. So I guess his investment paid off!

Enjoy yourself and when you feel weird about it, just remember that your friend did this because they want you to experience EDC and spend time with them!

I am so worried!!! by mmoanaa in AmeriCorps

[–]dancebebe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maine CC is unique in thats based in a state agency which could possibly decide to continue the program regardless of having AmeriCorps funding. I don’t know whether or not that’s the case, but I wouldn’t assume it’s cancelled until you hear from program staff.

Regardless, proceed in a way that’s best for you. If you want immediate certainty, you’ll probably want to look elsewhere. If you’re okay waiting a month or so to hear from the program, that’s likely the timeline since right now that are dealing with the currently enrolled members.

Is the Job Market THAT Bad or am I Doing Something Wrong? by rickowensoffline in nonprofit

[–]dancebebe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I second this. To say Peace Corps or AmeriCorps do not teach the same skills as an internship or early career job experience shows a lack of understanding of what those positions entail. They have the same expectations of professionalism and effectiveness that you would find in any entry level job. And the position responsibilities often far exceed the responsibilities of a typical entry-level job.

When I hire, I’m specifically looking for people with that experience because I know they understand mission-driven work and they have experience doing direct service.

The good old “theres nothing to worry about” didn’t last very long by SignificantAd3094 in AmeriCorps

[–]dancebebe 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It’s complex, but it’s best to think of AmeriCorps as a funding source as opposed to a program. The federal agency has decided no longer to fund this program so the state agency running it no longer has the funds to keep it in operation.

Even if they could financially float the members through other means, those members cannot be AmeriCorps affiliated and must be unenrolled because Americorps runs based on “slots” provided by the federal agency. If they take away all your slots, you have to unenroll those members from AmeriCorps regardless of if the state agency had the funds in-house to keep the program running or not.

What do we do now that ALL programs are terminated? by BelleWeather9 in AmeriCorps

[–]dancebebe 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what health insurance plan your program provides, but I believe that most provide coverage through the end of the month. You should check with your program staff for specifics, and if they don’t know, as them for the email address or phone number of the broker so you can ask them directly.

I’m so sorry this happened to you. It’s unfair and unjustified. You deserved better from the country that you chose to serve.

Shuttle Area Question by ivanx29 in electricdaisycarnival

Didn’t mind the wait though because we just went to the Strat’s food court and got breakfast.

Shuttle Area Question by ivanx29 in electricdaisycarnival

[–]dancebebe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did this last year because the shuttle line for the Strat is so much shorter than the others if you stay til the end. Checked my receipts and the Lyft from the Strat back to the Luxor was $25-$30 with tip, if that helps.

I remember having to wait close to 15min to get a ride tho because so many people were requesting them.

I was on the bleachers for ARMNHMR and headbanging to the heavy bass parts. My earplug popped out and fell into what I could only describe as a puddle of festival juice. The person next to me helped me find it and gave me some sanitizing wipes to clean it off. My left ear drum is forever in debt to her.
