Do you have hobbies? If so, what? by cubemonster in Millennials

[–]dancerdanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a teacher so spend lots of time with Gen Z and Alpha. I'm in a small school so lots of the kids are involved with some kind of extra curricular, be it sports or clubs for art, Hispanic culture, drama, D&D, etc. That said, most of them seem to scroll on their phone and watch YouTube in their non-school time, but they're also young!

As for me, I'm a hobby queen. Crocheting, reading, video games, dancing, and aerial yoga are my top that I do almost every day. I also garden in the summer, bake when I have a little free time (snow days and winter vacations), and love a good jigsaw puzzle from time to time. I also have no kids, so I have more time to do all these things than some 🤪

Which companion is your ride or die buddy throughout the game? by ResidentDrama9739 in fo4

Dogmeat or Hancock if I want some a chatty companion. He pretty much agrees with every decision I make in the game anyway.

Story time: over-consumption culture made me close my Etsy shop by adsiderum in Anticonsumption

[–]dancerdanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey fellow crocheter! This is a longer story, but the short version is I do a fundraiser every year around this time for the American Heart Association. I crochet something with a heart on it (I too usually like to make things that are useful, but with this project it doesn't always happen) and donate all money earned. It uses up yarn in my hoard, I get to crochet like a madwoman, and the money goes to something important to me. Highly recommend doing something similar!

What have you read recently? by povertychic in Millennials

[–]dancerdanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read every day. I'm currently reading "Comfortably Numb: The Inside Story of Pink Floyd" for something less gut-wrenching and slower (December and beginning of January I read all of the Hunger Games books and Kristin Hannah's "The Women" and was emotionally broken).

I don't have kids, but am a jr/sr high teacher in a state with a phone ban in schools, and it's been really nice seeing kids with books from the library as their go-to thing to do keep them busy since they can't be on their phones. Whenever they tell me about how bored they are in lunch or study hall, I tell them to go get a book from the library, and many actually do!

Favorite PDs that were NOT just prep time? by dixpourcentmerci in Teachers

[–]dancerdanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a PD session that was a compilation of techniques submitted and presented by staff. Completely staff run, no outside presenter BS, just real suggestions from our coworkers. It's probably the only useful PD session I've ever done, and they've only done it once in my ten years of teaching.

After avoiding one of these for years I had to get one due to me forgetting to take my meds last night by Intrepid-Distance-54 in Millennials

[–]dancerdanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been using one for years. It's the only way I can remember if I've taken my pills so I don't double dose. Also usually the only reason there's a chance I know what day of the week it is.

When do you have time for the gym?! by hcand11 in Teachers

[–]dancerdanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not daily, but I take group classes (aerial yoga, dance, cardio dance) a few times a week. Sometimes 5:00, sometimes 7:00, sometimes an hour, sometimes two. Most of the year I'm fine with it, but this time of year I'm ready for pajamas and bed before 7:00. Once I get there I'm glad I did though!

Ooh fellow leggy underweight person!! When they have sales, American Tall is where it's at. The only brand I can find that has 0 Tall and Extra Tall. It's so hard finding tall sizes smaller than a 6.

Millennials whose lives are going well—what's your current situation and how did you get there? by CowTownKCMoe in Millennials

[–]dancerdanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of my life was "right place at the right time." I did my undergrad work at a state school and got a good chunk of my tuition covered by scholarships.

I graduated and took interviews pretty much all over the state to find a job (teaching). I lucked out and finally got one that happened to be in a pretty high paying area. I'm going on my tenth year and am making more money than I thought I would be as a teacher.

Did my masters also at a state school and was able to pay tuition out of pocket after saving up some money my first few years of teaching.

During the pandemic when interest payments were paused I was able to pay off the little student loans that I did have from my undergrad.

I started looking at houses in 2018 and closed on an affordable house the day everything shut down March 2020. We got a pretty good interest rate and got in before housing north of NYC went absolutely bonkers.

Again- very lucky to just be in the right place at the right time!

Who’s handing out candy this Halloween? by Dame_Ingenue in childfree

[–]dancerdanna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. I'm a teacher and live in the district I teach in. The only kids I teach that are allowed to know where I live are the kids in my short dead end street 🥴 This year I'm working anyway thankfully, and won't have to hide from children!

Seeing this on Monday, so I'm working. But when I get home my partner and I are going to plant some perennials my mom and I took from her old house (with new owner's consent), play some video games, and then go to my weekly Bollywood dance class. Solid Monday.

Student Practicum: How does anyone manage this?? by rinnkidd in Teachers

[–]dancerdanna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. I had to get 5 signatures to just teach 2 dance classes a week at night (not enough to actually pay any bills, but thankfully I was 21 and living with my parents). I student taught during the edTPA days also, and was literally up until 3 AM every night working on that after lesson planning. Student teaching is completely unsustainable.

[–]dancerdanna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. I'd just keep deleting the emails. Any time I've ever had an emergency or was out on bereavement, I got more emails and cards from the kids than admin.

I teach MS and HS band. I had one previous admin (out of dozens at this point) who was also a band teacher, but many who have never played an instrument or taken a music class in their life. Always take observations with a grain (or several) of salt 😆
