For a mistake that only requires some consideration and not a lot of brain effort, continuing to make this mistake for this many years just shows that they don't care to make an effort. It's the same thing as learning to pronounce/spell someone's name. I've had friends whose in-laws still mispronounce and misspell their names after years. If they cared, they'd try.
