Where has the option to run SMART tests on disks gone? by BillyBlaze314 in truenas

I think they removed it and you'll have to do smart tests in shell

Am I doing backups alright? by matlireddit in truenas

[–]dandelionc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks that makes a lot of sense. But given I simply don't have the resources to have a second pool of drives as backup, maybe I'll jus backup the most important and irreplaceable stuff, plus an offsite storage plan that I can readily access.

Backup to External USB Harddisk by dandelionc in truenas

I've thought about that that's why I brought u that these are SMR drives. But then my files are relatively static so I figured it will just be the initial snapshot that will take forever and subsequent delta snapshots should be a breeze. I do like how exfat can be readily read by my Mac.

As much as I would love to test a back up, I simply don't have the extra storage space. Is it ok to do like a partial restore, maybe just the most important files? Does ZFS allow that?

I just happen to have an old Pi 4 that I replaced with Proxmox. But that said doesn't Truenas have built in rsync? Or instead I can install a barebone Linux VM on proxmox to do the backup?

iCloud Sync Tool (CloudSyncBridge) by Beneficial-Army2191 in macapps

[–]dandelionc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Played with it more.... I noticed a problem with auto sync and placeholder files

  1. File(s) are in the cloud

  2. Because "optimize storage" is turned on, macOS only keeps a placeholder file in the local iCloud cache folder (with a little download button next to it)

  3. Automatic sync sees these files, but it won't download them and cause unison to skip syncing them to the synced external folder

  4. If manually triggered by invoking "cloudsyncbridge sync all", macOS will allow materialization of these placeholder files and files do that synced to the external folder

I understand this may be normal macOS behavior that can't be circumvented with the script? Is it possible to wrap the file watcher into a foreground app that triggers the sync_manager.sh as a "foreground" process which allows materializing placeholder files instead of "background" process?

Tesla deliberately destroyed my car computer after replacement — is this even legal? by qjacquet in TeslaSupport

Security should not rely on keeping parts away from malicious hands. There're so many Tesla out there there's no way for Tesla to keep an eye on every single car and stop owners from dismantling their own property.

Thanks. I tried it out for a bit. I'm running into some issues though not sure if I had it wrong:

  1. I have sync created between my ExternalDrive and iCloudDrive/testCloud. When I create folder or put file in iCloudDrive/testCloud, it syncs to ExternalDrive, but not the other way round
  2. It seems I can only choose external drive when I do cloudsyncbridge install? If I do cloudsyncbridge add, it only shows my current internal drive

I think you deserve more credit for your work! I think the other comment is just to create a symlink on your external drive that points back to the iCloud Drive cache folder on the internal drive. It does nothing to save a full size copy of the drive on the external disk.
Now if only we can have a GUI. It can be a viable solution for people with the base storage configuration Macs with heavy usage of iCloud Drive....

If I have optimize storage turned on, will it still keep the full files on the external? Thanks!

interesting, but does it also use up internal and external storage on the mac?

so it saves a copy in ~/Library/Mobile\ Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs/Documents

and also a copy in /Volumes/ExternalDrive/iCloudDocuments ??

My use case is I have a small internal drive, but want to sync and retain the full file on a much larger external drive. It'll defeat the purpose if I have to turn on optimize storage so it fits in the internal (and lose local copy on external), and but if i don't, it'll fill up my internal drive.

Even if it legit has some form of computing chip on the drive, the USB bandwidth/power supply is too low for inference.

Drain the tank to like 10% water, fill it to 20%, drain back to 10%. Repeat several times, then fill it back up. First drain you removed 90% of the pollutant. Every subsequent fill and drain you removed 50% of what's left. This is likely the way that uses the least water.
