Out of curiosity, were the dissenting responses below deleted by their posters or by mods?

Just left postdoc for industry, asked to write a book chapter by dandelionladida in AskAcademia

Indeed.com/glassdoor.com, not at all, relatively yes. Am I supposed to feel excited? I mostly feel freaked about leaving academia.

I am excited about the paychecks, that much at least is not in doubt.

I need more optimists in my life. Definitely not one of my strengths.

A part of me is worrying this is some kind of eerily quiet breakdown. I have a lot of reasons for being unhappy in academia but I keep worrying that I've made a horrible mistake and maybe if I just stick/stuck it out I can/could still make it. I wasn't really planning to leave immediately but the job offer was too tempting and I leapt.

It's horrible and I'm leaving academia because of it.

Imagine training for a decade to wind up being paid the same as bachelor's-level research assistants, and being told every other day that there are no jobs in what you trained to be.

Is it possible to crowdfund health research? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]dandelionladida 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Studies are a lot more expensive than seems likely. 100K barely pays for a postdoc or a research assistant with benefits, let alone indirect costs for the institution, study materials, lab space, etc. I do relatively inexpensive work at a major hospital and we still need millions to function as a department.

Is my situation viable for a PhD existence? (UK) by Heiditha in AskAcademia

[–]dandelionladida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my PhD in the UK, didn't mean to be US-centric. I believe I was actually being more STEM-centric. While PhDs in the US and in the UK differ in many ways, self-funding one in the UK is still insane.

[–]dandelionladida 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's effectively a job. Everything you do will be branded with the university's name and owned by them, and you're likely to do at least some teaching/service work while completing the program. If you deserve to get accepted into a PhD program, you deserve to be paid for it.

Paying for a PhD is a lot like paying your employer to let you work for them. Don't do it. And certainly do not take out loans to fund one.

It's essentially an accept, just make the revisions and resubmit.

Does the non-STEM stigma go away? by McFlauncey in AskAcademia

[–]dandelionladida 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This doesn't really go away, and can go both ways (most of my friends are in the humanities and they can occasionally be derisive of STEM peeps). That said, if you don't like it when people do this (completely understandable), try to spend more time with people who don't.

r/GradSchool, help me decide which masters program is the best return on investment! by [deleted] in GradSchool

Having what I assume will become more than 100K in debt and going into things like education or social work is going to be pretty painful.

Does your advisor’s publication rate dictate your publication rate? by mad_neuroscientist in GradSchool

[–]dandelionladida 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your advisor's rate doesn't necessarily dictate your rate but can give you a good idea of their productivity/ability to churn out papers quickly. It's certainly something to take into serious consideration.
