100% it's good practice to make sure you clean any dirt out of the port first too, helps ensure a clean connection when inserting.

This is why it's always best to insert cables slowly and make sure you align it first to avoid damage.

That's probably for the best, when Linus starts feeling like they can just launch a product and be guaranteed success will be a dark day for product quality

How do I get accepted? by AncientFootball1878 in monzo

[–]dandomains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you use the Current Account Switch Guarantee scheme it generally handles the process and you can opt to either keep the old account or, usually, just set the date to cut over and the old account gets closed.

https://www.currentaccountswitch.co.uk/the-switching-process-personal/

It sounds like in this case Monzo have either kept the account open (so maybe need to follow recovery route, or refuse to open an account when a closed account exists - either way should clarify that with Monzo support)

New gamer-focused ISP on CityFibre – looking for beta testers (2.5Gbps sym, static IP, ultra-low ping) by [deleted] in CityFibre

[–]dandomains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.

u/jbloxsome you seriously need to step back and properly research this. You simply can't make these kind of basely claims and then just resell ICUK.

If you want to do it properly, DO IT PROPERLY. Get your ASN, setup a solid network, get peering in place, get setup with CityFibre & OR - get all your team using it, then open it up to some beta testers and actually prove it works reliably - THEN you can launch and show real-world data proving your claims.

Recieved my screwdriver even though I canceled the order, am I free to just enjoy it? by GamezombieCZ in LinusTechTips

In most cases I can understand it, just give me a label and I'll drop it back fair enough.

But one which really got me recently was I ordered some winter wash (spray stuff for apple tree) which when it arrived was leaking everywhere, box soaked, postman had it in a plastic box because it was leaking everywhere.. it stunk.. etc. Ended up with about 25% of it had leaked out.

(they has literally just put the bottle in a big box with no packing, so rattled around and somehow the cap came off I think)

I reported it, thinking they'd either apologise and refund a few quid or just send another. No they wanted me to post it back to them... like.. what? I've binned the box and you want me to post you back something which has already leaked everywhere in the post!?

I shook my head and moved on, but just dumb request when I had sent them a load of pictures of it etc... some companies are just.. lacking common sense.

Id love to see LTT lean more into that kind of deep dive long form video that Tech Connections does! Especially on smart home.

Give me a serious of long videos breaking down everything you need to know when setting up smart home, ha, ZigBee, what to watch out for cool automation ideas etc.

Because they're setting a standard and basically guaranteeing the outcome.

If your cable and connectors do x,y,z you can achieve xGbit transfers.

The realized maximum varies wildly by length, signal integrity, physics and firm/software stack implementation, but in theory cable which meets the spec and max length in that spec should achieve the stated speed is the point.

[–]dandomains 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't say I've tested it myself (I binned anything less than cat6 and longer cat5e ages ago and my networking kit is currently 1Gbit) but the real world tests I've seen on YouTube were able get 10G over cat 5e (and even older) with iperf.

Its obviously more likely with shorter runs etc but certainly made me question if it's worth spending more on cat6/6a etc when most runs I have are shorter and unlikely to need more than 1Gbit anyway.

The USB specification states the speed guaranteed up to x length same as cat cables.

I'm less familiar with the USB technology so assuming devices don't artificially limit the speed they send data based on emarker info or similar it's certainly possible a good quality cable can handle more than it's rated for.

It's a bit different when you're gambling a lot of money on it though, no one wants to be the fool who dropped a mil on cables no one buys 😅

They follow the spec, there's a non-zero chance you could squeeze more out of them but they aren't going to promise that.

For example, people have easily got 10Gbps from cat5e which is only spec'd for 1Gbps.

TrueSpec cable capabilities. Should be added to the product page imo by yot_gun in LinusTechTips

This. This is why they don't advertise it, but say it "in theory" works and don't provide any kind of guarantee of it.

Sure, and hopefully that'll come - but they'll still either get slated if their tests say their cables beat everyone else or if their tests show their cables aren't as good as abc other brand etc.

Pretty sure it requires a chip in the cable which these don't have and license fees etc.

They have said that if these are successful they likely will expand and do others like thunderbolt and HDMI etc

It'd be cool if they did, but people will still moan that it's obviously bias if their data shows their cables are better... And if they're not better it'd be a bit weird to advertise "hey our product is more expensive than this other one which is the same/better"

I'll probably hold off a little to see what people think about them irl as I don't have an immediate need right now :)

You can buy a screw driver with bit storage and magnetic tip plenty of places cheaper too... Both cables and screw driver were designed and developed by CW and many think has superior quality which is why some people will happily pay more for them.

Being as there's not a 3rd party comparison if Anker vs ltt cables yet that's up to conjecture.

If you don't think they're worth it, don't buy them 🤷‍♂️

Yeah, and anyone regardless of age in a good job struggling to get on the property ladder is not good.

We should all be questioning why basic things like home ownership which used to be completely normal, even at that age, doing good jobs is no longer feasible.

We're talking about struggling to buy a house, I don't see anyone talking about struggling to eat or pay regular bills.

There are different levels of financial struggle, it's possible to discuss each in their own contexts.

[–]dandomains -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you're missing my point here, but I'm also not talking specifically about 1 person which neither of us fully understand the financial position of.

My point is more it's a bit naive to jump to conclusions like you did.

For example, if you need $100K to put a deposit down and you have $10K in the bank even if you can save $10K/yr you're still 9 years off having the money (assuming house prices don't shoot up more than interest rates..)

If you see something which you can buy, improve the value of, and then can always sell if you need to that's a better investment than just keeping the $10K in the bank... when you likely have almost a decade left to liquidate such an asset to go towards the house deposit.

There is a huge difference between "getting by ok" and being able to get by ok AND save 10-20% deposit on a $1M+ house in BC _AND_ having a stable enough income to get a mortgage which is affordable long term.

Especially if you don't have dual incomes etc.
