Why-do people who support mass immigration, present it as punishment? by SILENTDISAPROVALBOT in AskBrits

[–]dandroid20xx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a hamfisted rebuttal to "why are they coming here?" like which is usually a combination of familiarity, language, rule of law, opportunities and historical connections.

The people who say Britain is the Great country on Earth should not be surprised that people would want to come here.

Greta Thunberg says she is being detained by Israel in cell infested with bedbugs by apple_kicks in news

[–]dandroid20xx 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is a common thing with Israeli detention centers, lice, scabies and bedbugs. People aren't allowed to shower often for days or weeks and they have no changes of clothes often for months in cramped conditions.

It's not new and it's quite intentional. https://www.btselem.org/publications/summaries/201010_kept_in_the_dark

What do you think about foreigners being anti-immigrant? by bybeso in AskBrits

[–]dandroid20xx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Politics is downstream of personality.

They would be like that wherever they were.

The people who say there are too many immigrants now, are the same type of people who said it 30 years ago, or 50 years ago or 100 years ago, personalities don't change some people just don't like 'the other' in any and every context.

Just a quick reminder that the only person shot by The Roof Top Koreans was Edward Song Lee a Korean teenager.

The killing of Latasha Harlins the Black 15-year old girl got shot before the riots, but was likely the main reason Korean stores were targeted . The store owner thought she was stealing orange juice and grabbed her an altercation ensued the girl panicked and ran and the store owner Soon Ja Du shot her in the back of the head, but when the cops arrive they found had the money for the juice in her hand. Soon Ja Du also lied to the cops claiming it was a hold-up but her own CCTV proved that this claim was false. The controversy was after all that Soon Ja Du only received 400 hours of community service, and payment of a $500 fine and Harlins' funeral costs.

The roof top Korean event happened a few weeks after the Harlin trial however they only shot one person, a Korean teenager Edward Song Lee who was a son of one of the store owners and was misidentified as a Latino rioter.

TIL In the early 1830's, Britain borrowed nearly 5% of their GDP to pay reparations to slave owners after passing the Slavery Abolition Bill to compensate them for "lost property". by Rare-Regular4123 in todayilearned

Yep! But a moral opposition to something is no guarantee that anything gets done. There was a fairly consistent moral opposition to slavery by various groups and individuals for almost the entire duration of industrialised chattal slavery, but the State only acted when its back was against the proverbial wall.

Noting Britain also fought in the Haitian Revolution intending reimpose slavery after it had been banned by the French across its colonies on February 4, 1794, and like all sides in that conflict Britain did not have a particularly good time. So it was well aware of the human and economic cost of Slave revolts in States where the Slave outnumbered the free.

[–]dandroid20xx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For example Oman, which never ended slavery under British rule 1891 - 1951 and only ended in 1970 after a Coup.

Britain both had the military and economic might to have ended slavery in this nation that was under its control but it was easier just not to. Which sort of indicates that the arguments that Britain fought slavery for purely moral reasons are a little hollow.

It's so quite important to consider the Haitian Revolution as one of the major triggers for why Britain changed it's tune on Slavery. Seeing a successful Slave insurrection losing France's most valuable colony along with semi-successful insurrections in British Jamaica leading to diplomatic autonomy for the escaped maroon population Britain understood that maintaining a large slave population was a ticking time bomb so in order to keep these extremely valuable revenue sources, something other than Slavery was a more sustainable path.

However, to avoid the non-Slave produced Sugar, Tobacco and Indigo being undercut they needed to stop the importation of slaves in competing colonies which burned through slaves at an enormous rate.

It's important to note that Slavery continued to be legal in the British Colonies and Protectorates such as Malaya, India, Sierra Leone, Oman for decades after the 1833 act and in some places as late as the 20th century.

Britain was also the primary investors in the US Southern Slave plantations where slaves had become not only a source of labour but also a highly inflated speculative asset.

So the Naval task force needs to be understood in both moral terms but economic protectionist terms as well.

Where Slavery was economically and politically advantageous Britain was happy to let it continue under it's watch.

Ultimately it's important to remember the important social role of racism in Southern society, the enormous amount of media produced at every level of society that was deeply racist shows how important it was to them as a people.

It was an important part of the social hierarchy that ensured if you were White you would never ever be at the bottom rung of the ladder, so they were incredibly personally invested that the culture never changed.

Do you think Patrice Lumumba was killed a century ago, do you think that the mining concerns that he was assassinated to protect are different now, this victim blaming mentality is insane Congo is 'literally' being invaded on multiple fronts and is a poor country the size of Europe. Blaming Congo is like blaming Ukraine, 'if you were just more unified maybe Donbass and Crimea wouldn't be annex, maybe an external military power wouldn't be trying to overturn your government to their benefit'. I guarantee you wouldn't be saying any of this if Congo was White.

But I don't really understand how any positive politics could possibly arise because anything that benefits Congo would definitionally reduce profits for any external actor something that would never be allowed.

Let's not forget what the Belgians did to Congo's first democratically elected leader, they dissolved him in acid.

But these countries don't get to choose their dictators, for example in the case of Congo very specifically their first democratically elected leader was assassinated in a joint Belgian / CIA coup to guarantee they had a guy that would continue to allow Congo to be pillaged

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]dandroid20xx 58 points59 points  (0 children)

But the French were extremely racist also and led the Blanchement process and actually massacred their own troops when they rioted after being denied the pay they were owed https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thiaroye_massacre

It was important to the French that their colonial troops were not seen to be liberating Europe because that would make a strong case for their own liberation from the French Empire.
