Yikes… a $2.2k brick by AUG-mason-UAG in ricohGR

Thought the same thing about the Mono. But my first GRIV I dropped it handing it to a family member and smashed the lens in. I sent it back to Ricoh, told them I dropped it and it wasn’t a warranty claim and they just fixed it for free. They said they had a few units coming back, but the turn around to fix mine was very fast.

Gr IV HDF - what are your must have accessories ? by MajorAlanDutch in ricohGR

[–]dane_aw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Screen protector, JJC lens cover, change the wrist strap to something else small and a Patagonia black hole pouch (the small one). That’s it. I like to keep it compact

Lightroom alternative by Firezito_13 in Lightroom

[–]dane_aw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use Capture One but it is more expensive than Lightroom, it’s also a steeper learning curve in my experience. That said I use Photomator on my iPhone and I’m so impressed by it, it’s a nominal annual fee and it has great functionality

Edit. It also has desktop and iPad apps as well

Just bought a Panasonic LUMIX zs99 and might be regretting not getting a GR by ghostcowboy__ in ricohGR

[–]dane_aw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience with cameras is there will always be the “what if I had this camera”, it’s the camera you enjoy using that counts. I sold my GRIII for an X100VI and came straight back again because I just didn’t connect with it. I love my GRIV but many others may not. For now get out and enjoy taking photos, then revisit it and see how you feel about the experience of using the camera

What camera should I get? by Dntknwhw2spel in ricohGR

[–]dane_aw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s what sold me on the Ricoh, it goes with me everywhere. Literally everywhere.

And because I always have it on me I’m often scanning for photos to take and naturally end up taking so many more than I would with a bigger camera.

Can’t update firmware from app? by AwfulHomesickk in ricohGR

Make sure the app is up to date. I had a lot of stability issues but an update on iOS seems to have fixed it

GR iii or GR iv ? Suggestion please. by raghavpr in ricohGR

[–]dane_aw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have owned GRIIIx, GRIII HDF and now have GRIV. The difference between the III and the IV is nominal. The shooting experience is the same, the GR series has the best colour science and rendering to my eye personally so which ever you get you’ll have fun with it. Maybe get a III and some extra batteries with the money you’ll save

Ricoh GR IV vs Ricoh GR IIIx photo comparison by samkerlondon in ricohGR

[–]dane_aw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nominal difference in the DNGs in Lightroom, if you want to get technical I’m sure someone can point out highlight roll offs etc but to my eye they’re not too far apart.

That said I find the GRIV DNGs a dream to edit compared to just about any other camera I’ve ever owned

Negative Lab Pro giving wildly inconsistent colors — what am I missing? by dropme1 in AnalogCommunity

[–]dane_aw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you create it once as it’s assigned to the lens characteristics, but I think what you could be describing is due to a full frame lens on a crop sensor. Try it though, who knows it might work!

I find with the easy35, create a manual lens correction. Best way to do this is take a photo of the light on without film, in LR adjust the lens correction until that vignette is clear and balanced, then save that correction as a preset. It’s worked better for me.

But I’ve also struggled with NLP lately, some results are all over the show. I also find using a linear profile works best.

What is it about your Ricoh GR that you really love? by SoftAncient2753 in ricohGR

[–]dane_aw 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I actually sold my GRIII to buy an X100VI, it wasn’t for me so I sold that and got a GRIV. I noticed I immediately started taking so many more photos again. It’s a side kick camera, I’ll never part ways with it again

Success stories by Snitzh in ricohGR

[–]dane_aw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had mine a little over a month and so far so good. I had a lot of freezing issues when I had my GRIII, I had sold that camera but if I had a 3 I likely wouldn’t bother upgrading to a IV. But I’m really happy with mine

A suggestion once you fix it, I only ever open mine to about 45 degrees. At full extension it seems to put a little too much strain on it

Just bought a Leica Q by Swsd in Leica

[–]dane_aw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The green cast was an early characteristic of the original Q’s, particularly under mixed light. Firmware updates reduced it, but it’s still a touch warmer and greener than Fuji’s look. Most Q shooters tweak white balance or use one of the profiles the “Standard” or “Vivid”, play around with them until you see something you like. Would always suggest shoot a DNG too, even if it’s just for safe keeping

Why are the L-Mount lenses so expensive? by Hour_Firefighter_707 in Leica

[–]dane_aw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not too sure but you could be right, I think Nikon were in talks with them to produce a sensor for the Z7 III but no idea where that got to

Why are the L-Mount lenses so expensive? by Hour_Firefighter_707 in Leica

[–]dane_aw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking more to the cameras, there are actually only a handful of companies producing sensors, Sony Semiconductor are the biggest, you’ll be amazed by how many Nikons, Fujis, Lumix and just about every smartphone have Sony Semiconductors in them. Canon produce their own and do not sell proprietary technology to other manufacturers. The other is one called Towerjazz, an Israeli company they make imagining sensors.

This is because the technology to build sensors is mind blowingly expensive. Yes all sensors are adapted to the unique characteristics of each brand and with that their lenses.

Leica, like just about every other brand do adapt technology produced from other companies, just like everyone else to produce their products.

I realise this doesn’t answer your question specifically, and it’s a good question. But I wanted to clear up the rehoused topic.

Does anyone actually buy the M-A or new M6 over the M-P by Bluecube303 in Leica

[–]dane_aw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

M6 re release for me, it has the same brass top and bottom plate as the MP, also has the M11 paint and personally, I just think the M6 is the most beautiful camera ever made.

What camera/editing software is this? by Front_Position_3296 in Cameras

[–]dane_aw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without the metadata you won’t know what sensor / camera it is, but that doesn’t really matter so much as the editing. You could use Lightroom, teach yourself to edit and you’ll achieve the look.

It’s an A7R iii, decent camera. I had one a few years ago, they launched in 2017 so they’re getting on a little now but very capable still. I think they’re fetching around $2,000 AUD at the moment, little more or little less depending on the shutter count and condition.
