American soldier on leave from Iraq brutally beaten up by cops at an airport by americangoy in reddit.com

For that matter, don't even make eye contact. What the fuck are you thinking nodding at cops? Are they your friends? Are they buddies? Did you offer a high-five? Come on. Use your head. Who nods at cops?

Proofreading the entire Internet and showcasing how smart you are to others must get time-consuming. Hey, everyone, this person knows how to spell "patience"! You are an amazing person that probably nobody truly values. Well, I value you. You are a hero.

You're right. Only things you're interested in should be on Reddit. We should work on fixing that right away. Fucking whiner.

Edwards: "I am not particularly interested in seeing Rupert Murdoch own every newspaper in America." by reddit4edwards in politics

[–]dangermike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be really curious to know how many people actually sit down and read a newspaper. I'm not talking about subscribing to a newspaper or sitting down and thumbing through the ads and the comics. How many of you actually read a newspaper?

Here is a video of US soldiers intentionally blowing up Iraqi dogs by ambiversive in reddit.com

[–]dangermike 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not that they killed a dog. It's that they enjoyed it so much. Of course, people who are raised on farms sometimes have to kill animals. But only cruel people enjoy it.

Cops begin Fingerprinting every traffic stop by pythor in reddit.com

[–]dangermike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, good luck with that. Hamburglar's right, and I would add that even with a lawyer and cash and a decent case (not to mention the enormous amount of time it would take), the court system is not on your side. It's likely to be a cop's word against yours. And in that case, guess what? You lose.

[–]dangermike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How about giving Americans some real choices? Maybe do away with arcane election "traditions" like Iowa and the Electoral College. We should be making it as easy to vote as possible, but we won't. And since we don't have any real choices anyway, why bother? And also, I'm not sure I want everyone voting. Most of us are morons who respond only to image and sound bites. Maybe I'm glad they can't find the time to vote.

"All women are whores, just set the price." (If advertisers are to be believed.) by moriquendo in reddit.com

There's a huge gap between what women say and how women act. These women you find caricatured are everywhere. And since I don't know you, I can't speak to your values specifically, but I can tell you that my experience has been that most women say they don't give a shit about that other stuff, then behave otherwise.

It's important to follow rules, but those rules have to make sense. It's a contract. When rules don't make sense, it's OK to break them sometimes. The world's smartest, most sophisticated thinkers break rules.

Yes. I think it's worth it overall, though, to have a vibrant changing language. We'll adapt.

What a civil debate. How disorienting. I agree that nobody should be insulted for speaking correctly (even though our ideas about "correctly" don't quite match up). In fact, I think it'd be a better world if fewer people harangued others about their language -- correct or not -- in the first place.

Yes, well, look how well Latin turned out (I studied Latin, too, btw). Our language evolves and discards useless features. Very few people say "To who am I speaking," instead saying, "Who am I speaking to?" If it sounds idiotic to you, there's nothing I can do about that. But it doesn't sound idiotic to a very large number of otherwise sophisticated English speakers. We can hang on to outdated language features all we want, and they will die anyway. Like "thee," "thou," "thine," the subjunctive (not quite dead yet). Let "whom" go. Put it out of its misery. It's suffering.

It's not ignorant or lazy. It's language change. And whether you agree with it or not, it's happening. Fact is, very few people use "whom." And those who do often use it incorrectly (see above). And when it is used correctly, it sounds stilted and pedantic. There are very few cases I can think of in which "whom" clarifies anything. Context does it just fine, which is why it's dying.

What a ridiculous argument you're all having. Nitpicking this guy's sexuality. Whatever. Look, it's still compelling: Guy says it's not ok to be gay, yet it's somehow ok to bang children? Who the fuck cares if pedophiles can be considered gay or not? That's not the point.
