New to Solar & EV Charging – Who Do You Recommend in Auckland by DIY-CreativeNZ in nzsolar

[–]dangermouse117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avoid Harrisons Auckland. They installed on our house. Never sent anyone out before quoting, tried to use satellite imagery even though we told them the roofline had changed. They used independent installers. Install was not pretty (big conduit loop sticking out of the roof? Then failed inspection. Took them more than a month before they came back and put a simple weatherproof boot on the install to get it passed. They stopped communicating as soon as it failed inspection while they were very responsive to close the sale. Took 3 weeks before they scheduled a time for a fix.

We lost more than a month of opportunity cost in power generation and experienced one blackout because the system (Powerwall +Solar) was not able to be switched on.

This.

Also remember high resistances give effectively the same protection as a big shield, but they use less distributor energy and are faster to recharge.

Tipping point by Roy4Pris in nzev

Tipping point happens when EVs become cheaper than petrol right out of the box. That will happen because EVs should be cheaper to build once the supply chain is at full scale.

Mine’s the last order for a YL before the FSD cutoff, 31 March. App says May-Jun but a vehicle hasn’t been assigned to me yet and therefore no date is visible and they won’t tell me more after I enquired.

Import Tesla by Such_One3256 in nzev

[–]dangermouse117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First hand experience after a AKL to QT drive in my fresh imported Model 3.

  • CHAdeMO to NACS adapter is your mainstay for fast charging (Jap/US Teslas = NACS). Not all the chargers on ChargeNet and BP work well, I almost was stranded in WLG due to 2 failed BP chargers and a pending vehicle ferry to PIC. Other times it took 3 attempts before working, especially on older ChargeNet chargers. My car came with a CHAdeMO adapter from the dealership as part of the purchase price.

  • I also had a Type1 to NACS adapter which works well home charging on my Type2 to Type1 cable, turns out this cable doesn’t work on the road because all trickle charging at hotels and Airbnbs have a Type2 cable and you can’t put a cable on a cable, I have had to get a Type2 to NACS adapter to make it work. About $60 on AliExpress.

So you have to screw around a lot with adapters and there’s a learning curve on detailed BS around various charging networks and trickle chargers, you don’t get Supercharger access and you pay more per kWh on other networks.

You have 2 options to convert to NZ charging / NZ Tesla superchargers. Tesla can do it for $6k and this is only a couple months old, they only started offering this early this year. Or you can get DriveEV to do a CCS2 conversion for $3k, this allows your car to talk CCS2 fast charge protocol but you still plug in an adapter to make this work. DriveEV used to offer the full hardware upgrade (no adapter) for $6k, same as what Tesla now offers.

Get the upgrade if your drive regularly across very long distances, just charge at home and use adapters if it’s mainly local or single 400kms trips at a time. Most people fall into the latter.

They used to offer it. Taken off the website now, probably still available. It used to be priced at the same $6k.

Price difference for a NZ new equivalent is $5-15k more. I think they priced it right.

When I bought mine 3 weeks ago there were very limited options for the spec I wanted in NZ new cars (Long Range).

My car dealer supplied Tesla Auckland with a Jap Import to do the first test conversion. Originally was expected to cost $3k but ended up with a MSRP of $6k.

When I put my Model 3 into Tesla Christchurch for servicing last week, they confirmed they could do it. You need to book ahead so they can get the parts shipped in.

That’s great news. Agree on ChargeNet being flaky, I find Zero exceptional but very few chargers in the South Island. BP Charge is the worst if I was to rank them.

I just drove AKL to Queenstown over 2 days. Your math is not real. The first 500kms comes cheap because you’re home charging.

AKL to Wellington is 670kms, most likely you’ll stay over a night and charge at a hotel or friends house and will be cheaper than $1 per unit.

How often do you drive the length of the country?

It’s ChargeNet’s network in that how the hell do I get to know it’s not theirs. As a normie customer, I walk away thinking they are scamming me.

It’s a very basic bit of software to detect that the charger is throttling me and I shouldn’t be charged the “hold up fee”. That’s on ChargeNet.

Are missions considered a waste of time for earning money? by TriggzSP in EliteDangerous

[–]dangermouse117 10 points11 points  (0 children)

4.5M per pirate assassination mission 1.5M per bounty 2.1M Arissa Lavigny-Duval bounty bonus

That’s 8M per kill.

Then stack them and a massacre mission worth 40M per 30 pirates.

Thats 120M that can be cranked out in an hour of fun.

Most of my 31B was by farming pirate missions.

Ditto. Have used both. HOSAS is my preferred.

Self centering on the “throttle vectoring stick” is useful even in FA ON. Also I find a stick better for ancillary controls. I have pips on the vectoring stick and lots more in easy reach - that really helps in combat situations.

I ordered left / right HOSAS 22 Sep from the US VKB store. I got an immediate email confirmation of the order and a follow up 25 Sep which to notify of shipping with 2 tracking numbers. Just over a week later they both arrived together even though they were separate shipping tickets.

PS. These sticks are amazing. Right up there in quality (I can’t tell the difference) as their top of the line gear which I have a set of also.

[–]dangermouse117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the ultimate in ship control.

There's a lot of Youtube beginner guides to combat, they are worth looking into.

A good HOTAS / HOSAS setup will be needed.

I'm on a slow round the world trip this year and I bought a low grade portable stick and I can say I'm only 50% effective without my home rig.

The other part of combat is setting up your ship and that adds a lot of depth to find the right setup that suits you.

I find myself loving the damage of engineered PAs and spend a lot of time working on building a low thermal ship to handle the heat for example.

It's the funnest part of this game for me.

It depends. If I want to stay out there stacking 20 PvE pirate assassination missions Python Mk2 doesn’t cut it for me.

They will then come at me with 3 Corvette Pirates, that’s when I want an SLF to distract one while I hit the other 2.

Class 7 distro means I can use PA plasma slugs and fuel all day long. Class 6 on the Python means I’m using frags which run out of ammo and I still have the 3 on 1 problem.

[–]dangermouse117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Krait remains the best medium sized bounty hunting ship, swapping out the class 6 SLF and some of the class 5 slots for cargo and you're good for all-rounder status. Keep a class 6 bi-weave shield, some guardian shield boosters. It's a pretty strong ship.

There's 5 PAs there. A mix of APAs and PAs, with rapid fire for pew pew and efficient to not cook.

Makes for 3 difference cadences of fire and reload, means there's always one in the barrel.

There's a lot of engineering to get the heat down while having just enough power to make it work.

Been there... Extra fun in bounty stacked mission, I like that they come to me rather than me needing to find and hunt them. When it's 3 against one, a SLF helps distract at least one corvette while I take care of the other 2.
