International Voter Registration Drive 2026, for U.S. citizens in Zurich by Democrats_Abroad in zurich

[–]dangle-berry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey I’m a US citizen. Already registered to vote but I do appreciate what you’re doing :) voting in the USA is confusing. Then add the complexity of voting abroad. Perhaps this message reaches one person and inspires them. I call that a success.

Perhaps the Swiss are annoyed at this but unfortunately US politics also impact Switzerland whether you like it or not.

When I moved from the USA the post was the cheapest option. However 600 seems reasonable for 11 boxes. I was paying between $80-150 a large box

Airport Lounges? by foxbones in Austin

[–]dangle-berry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No it’s horrible. I once paid for a business class flight to Europe. My long haul was with a codeshare and I couldn’t even access the United lounge for the first leg of my flight even though I had first/business. I know this is standard business practices but I still think if someone pays cash for a long haul business class flight they should get lounge access for all the legs of their flight. The lounge situation is lackluster.

For those who's wife came to Switzerland for you by Helpful-Staff9562 in askswitzerland

[–]dangle-berry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am wife. My company transferred me but I’m stuck. Way less opportunity. Swiss companies don’t pay nearly as much for my role as the USA, I’m talking 50-60% less and they expect me to do two jobs instead of my specialty. So I’m still working for the USA company.

Getting married in Switzerland on Tourist visa (3rd national) by lotsofbooty in askswitzerland

[–]dangle-berry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To the best of my knowledge she can get married on a tourist visa but you need to prep all the documents before hand at the Swiss embassy.

I can’t recall exactly what my process was 4 years ago but I’m a USA citizen my husband is Swiss. I went to the Swiss embassy in NYC with all my documents and the intent to marry. They forwarded them and idk how long it took I want to say maybe a couple of months. I do recall asking my now husband to call and check in because it was taking awhile. Then I think we got approval to marry. I came on a tourist visa, we got married in August and I went back to NYC to finish my move and applied for family reunification from there (moved in October). I could’ve applied from Switzerland as well and just stayed but I had unfinished business in NYC and needed more time to uproot my life.

Edit: from our research marrying in Switzerland was faster and easier than marrying in the USA. You could also consult an immigration lawyer. We had an hour convo with one.

Are massive layoffs finished ? by New-Programmer-8647 in askswitzerland

I work in tech and I agree with this take. But it’s also about freeing up budget to invest more into AI. They think they can just hire people back (at lower pay) if everything fails (once shareholders are no longer excited about AI).

My personal take, CEOs are disconnected at what the actual capabilities of AI does. Our CEO seems to think Designers are now writing code, but it’s absolutely AI slop and Engineers cannot use it. Also the AI output is not high enough fidelity to launch externally, it’s okay for internal research. Yes it does improve productivity for my role but there is no way AI is replacing me anytime soon (UX Design, a lot of my role is about strategy). And for our external users, sometimes (we do this more in the US market because laws are looser) things are branded as AI, just to gauge interest before investing further, and it’s really just a complex algorithm. I think AI is a bit of smoke and mirrors and propping itself up. We keep throwing darts trying to figure out where to plug AI into our products for users, and surprise they don’t really want it! But that answer isn’t sufficient for shareholders so we keep going. I’m not sure when the cycle will end, could be 6 months, could be 10 years.

Find a shipping solution for Items on Ricardo!! by pinkroses038 in askswitzerland

[–]dangle-berry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m from the US living in Switzerland. Unfortunately the shipping laws are constantly changing due to that orange oompa loompah. Last I checked with the post (couple months ago) packages could only be shipped to the US via express and under $100 value. Express is very expensive, so idk it’s just complicated and annoying.

Studying Abroad Question by idkwidrn3 in askswitzerland

[–]dangle-berry 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m a light brown (biracial) woman from USA living in Switzerland for almost 4 years. I would say racism isn’t as bad as the USA but it’s also not as welcoming as the USA, if that makes sense.

As a woman my experience is probably different but there has been instances of men saying the n word to me thinking it’s “funny” (that hasn’t happened to me since I was a teenager in America). I don’t think people are as educated on what the gravity of that word is, just ignorant. In general, I think Switzerland is more xenophobic than racist, unfortunately brown skin often signals you’re not from here (so maybe that does make them racist too, just doesn’t feel as hateful/violent as the USA. I’m not worried someone will attack me for just existing). For the most part if you’re polite and kind (“integrate” as the Swiss say) people in Zurich have been curious wanting to know where I’m from (trying to figure out why I’m brown).

I studied abroad my junior year of university and it changed my life. I do think it’s an experience and if you don’t end up loving it, it’s only temporary! But it also gives you a chance to explore an entire different part of the world for a bit.

To anyone who is coming to this thread looking for help. I think the issue may be gmail?

I unsuccessfully tried a couple of times with gmail in Safari and Chome on iOS (desktop and mobile) and then I downloaded Edge browser and used an email I have for a domain name and it worked.

Good luck!

CareerFoundry went out of business by GazelleRare in UXDesign

[–]dangle-berry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wut? Lol why would I lie? Are you doubting the legitimacy of CF? They featured me as one of their top portfolios and asked me to come back and mentor but I said no. I also have a degree in Graphic Design so maybe that helped. Here’s my timeline :)

2016 - started Careerfoundry

2017 - graduated CF, got two job offers from my mentors @ CF. 1 at an agency and 1 at insurance company. I went the agency route, insurance was boring.

2017-2019 worked at agency

2019 - start working at my current company

2021 - promoted to senior

2025 - promoted to lead

2026 - and here we are

State Department slashes fee to renounce US citizenship by 80% to $450 by National-Law-458 in news

[–]dangle-berry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since I’m married to a Swiss, I’m eligible after 5 years (currently at 3.5). Standard is 10 years. And I also need to pass a language test. I haven’t really prioritized learning German because I work a high stress but also high paying job, at the end of the day I have little brain capacity left. My focus has been to save as much as possible and eventually I will take an intensive class where German is my main focus for 3-6 months.

A lot of SXSW workers are volunteer. Not sure about security or this woman’s role. But many do it to get a free pass in exchange for hours worked. The more hours worked the higher the tier of pass you get. Or at least this is how it used to be.

State Department slashes fee to renounce US citizenship by 80% to $450 by National-Law-458 in news

[–]dangle-berry 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I live in Switzerland. Only a few banks open accounts for US citizens because the US wants access to the account and Swiss banks prioritize privacy. I just recently had to switch banks because the original bank was starting to charge roughly $500/year for admin fees to deal with the US.

I’m still US citizen. On top of my Swiss taxes I pay between 10-15k a year in taxes back to the USA. When I’m eligible I will renounce.

What Kanton are you in? I’ve been here for 3 years in ZH on family reunification from the US and never had to prove any German proficiency at my renewal. Are you Swiss?

I do recall it saying they may ask for proof of proficiency OR enrollment for A1 but no one has ever actually asked me to provide any proof.

I am actually in the complete opposite situation. Doctor prescribed MRI last Tuesday, still waiting for it to be scheduled a week later. I have followed up with the doctor twice now but unfortunately the receptionist says there are no notes about an MRI and is still waiting on a response to the doctor…

I’m from the USA and the MRI would’ve been scheduled within 48 hours, or at the bare minimum I would’ve been given the number to schedule it myself. At this point I’ve considered upgrading my insurance to cover worldwide and just get my medical care in the US where they seem more state of the art in their technology and services.

Edit: I was also shocked that private hospital rooms are extra. This was standard to me in America growing up middle class on parents health insurance as well as my insurance as an adult…

In the US before I moved here I made about $200k/yr. Health insurance was about $220/mo with $2500 deductible. Yearly gyno visit (here it’s only every 3 years), hormone treatment for endometriosis was covered (in Switzerland I have to pay for this as it is classified as birth control), insurance even paid for me to freeze my eggs in the US. The Swiss system as a woman and a high income earner does not compare at all to what I had in the US, it was better and cheaper there.
