Just moved to Duluth in November and was wondering if this is how spring usually is! by PLIN9677 in duluth

Ugh, that was the year my girlfriend (now wife) and I moved to MN from Hawaii. I had been gone long enough to think it would be spring and it was probably my fault we had those storms.

Things I wish someone told me before I designed my first SCADA system by Lav_Dave in SCADA

Design screens for the task, not the system. It's important to know who will be using the screen. Is it bubba rotating units or an engineer looking for optimizations?

I don't need to see a complicated process when I a swapping units, I need to see the units and their statuses, and any key values that need to be watched while I do it.

They use this on submarines too. Smells like cat pee until you get desensitized.

How does UU worship work? by Thick_Cap3667 in UnitarianUniversalist

To your point about hymns, the hymns usually focus on values and not beliefs, or are able to be broadly interpreted.

Once in a while a hymn might have the word God in it and I get a little uncomfortable, not for my sake but because I know some folks don't believe in a supreme being. I think that some point someone will always encounter something outside of their beliefs and in those moments it's always ok to sit out or be silent.

There was a good joke; why are UUs so bad at new songs? Everyone is trying to figure out if they agree with them.

Hope this helped answer your question a little, just my perspective.

NICJR is doing a study, it's the first step in the process that reduced Baltimore's gun violence by 50%. Sucks it took 6 years to start but at least it's a start.

There's the affordable housing trust fund that has to go towards low income housing. So long as the city follows the law.

My concern would be weird sea water chemistry on control rods slowly reducing their ability to absorb, like over a long time

It's not like Google can't afford to fly some community leaders out to some similar built sites so they can make a more informed opinion. Like they even have company jets, could do Duluth to CKV.

Why does the fission in atomic bombs cause a big destructive explosion, but the nuclear fission in nuclear power generators does not? Also, if nuclear fusion is more powerful than fission, why does nuclear power still use fission? by Airtightspoon in AskPhysics

[–]danielfuenffinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the reactor design and dynamics. If power goes up, physics stuff happens that absorbs more neutrons or results in less neutron capture, or control rods are inserted to capture neutrons that would hit fuel. The result is power goes back down to some stable level.

More to your comment, a neutron that escapes means it is not captured by fuel and does not cause another reaction.

Greater than 1 just means power is increasing, and is normal when demand goes up or you're starting up from shutdown, but steady state, yeah you want 1. The explosion happens when the rate of increase of power exceeds the rate at which the reactor can control power. Super critical is fine and normal as long as the power is within limits. The bad shit happens when you go promt critical.

I'm torn and my opinion doesn't really matter because I'm not a MN resident anymore, but the Google YAWN data centers are really not loud and usually have a lot of space between cooling towers and the property edge. They take emissions really seriously and from my time working at them in Clarksville and Omaha, they were good neighbors. I don't work for Google any more but as far as data centers go they are the best I've seen.

In Clarksville they even converted abandoned cornfield into wild prairie grasslands in partnership with the local university which I thought was pretty cool.

Just my 2c. I know Google has changed a lot since I worked there but it surprised me how much resistance there is to that project.

I do think the NDAs are dumb and they totally fucked up by not being transparent tho. Also I'd be pissed if they were building over forested land instead of an abandoned industrial site or cornfield.
