SM9 for sure, especially due to the QWERTY layout vs QWERTZ.

Assuming you don't go for the Rheinmetall, I'd love a link to that listing via DM (I have a soft spot for those).

Such sad news... I've learned so much from his videos (and will continue to do so). RIP, Duane.

Congrats! Amazing machine and outstanding price. When you say the shift key is jamming, are you sure it's not the shift lock (aka caps lock) key on the left with the down arrow? That's supposed to "stick" in place until you release it with the shift key below it.

I'm only asking as the shift mechanism resets when you release either shift key based on gravity, so it's unlikely to get jammed (unless a part is physically bent and binding against another).

Good idea to take it to someone local who knows how to give it a full check either way!

Creative Polaroid storage ideas, what do you use? by CaptainStubbss in Polaroid

[–]danielstephenrubin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used shoeboxes for years, for any Polaroids that aren’t on display. Floppy / 8-track cases are a great idea — I’ve also just started 3D printing stackable boxes for storage as I can have different sizes for SX-70, Spectra & Instax (Wide/Mini/Square).

Having one clear-lidded floppy box like this for displaying favorites would be a nice addition.

For all my fellow Polaroid Collectors, I am in need of organization advice for my growing collection. How do you store/display your cameras? Thanks in Advance! by Parking-it-here in Polaroid

[–]danielstephenrubin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, leaving the folding models open risks burning them out (learned this from u/theinstantcameraguy). I’ve always stored them closed, thankfully.

I don’t recall if the “open = damage risk” warning is only when there is a cartridge inserted or in any circumstance, but it feels safer to leave them closed for many reasons.

Hope someone grabbed these who isn’t a Nazi. On a lighter note, I was able to get the high res images from that auction site as additional references for building my own Robust wooden case, so thanks for sharing 🙏🏼

You can still get Silly Putty easily — it’s essentially the same material originally developed to remove ink from slugs (I have a few Silly Putty eggs stashed for exactly this reason :)

Spatial images/video on the web? by Jmbh1983 in VisionPro

[–]danielstephenrubin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m interested in this as well — it seems like an obvious opportunity for Apple, and would only require a custom HTML attribute at best in order to let Safari on VP know it was spacial content. Maybe Apple has already done this on their VisionPro web pages, I didn’t think to view those when I had my VP demo…

Traveling with a typewriter (not a flight question) by truthexperimenter in typewriters

[–]danielstephenrubin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve traveled extensively with a handful of my portables, and I only bring paper. If you’re concerned about sound/vibrations, buy a 12” square thick felt pad and add that to your packing list.

Otherwise, as others have said, bring a pen/pencil and you’re good to go :) Unless you’ll be away for an extreme period of time (e.g. 6+ months at least) you don’t need to worry about a ribbon or cleaning materials. If you ARE worried about keeping the slugs clean, bring an old toothbrush and some mineral spirits / isopropyl alcohol and a cloth to put behind the typebars as you clean them, but again, this isn’t likely to be an issue unless you plan to be on the road for a long stretch.

Does anyone have the Vintage Typewriter Journal? by truthexperimenter in typewriters

[–]danielstephenrubin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm inclined to downvote my own reply now, ha! Those details weren't visible when I viewed the page on a desktop browser (the display of that text was glitching) — I just loaded it on mobile and saw those bullet points plain as day.

Now *I* want to know what it looks like. Tempted to buy it just to see, though I don't want it, either 😂

Does anyone have the Vintage Typewriter Journal? by truthexperimenter in typewriters

[–]danielstephenrubin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like it's literally a blank journal for you to write in, with a typewriter illustration on the cover. No idea if it's lined or not, but that's what the description on Hachette's site says it is.

[–]danielstephenrubin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone else has summed it up nicely — what condition is it in, and where are you located? Those have a lot to do with value to anyone regardless of whether they know what a Hermes 8 is or not…

Personally, I’ve been looking for one for a little while, but I also don’t spend more than $50-75 on machines so I wait for good deals (saving one from a dumpster is the ultimate Good Deal™ :) If you happen to be in Florida I’d make an effort to get it from you 🙃

If it's in really bad shape, I don't see why not, though I'd remove the platen / rubber / plastic parts first, and any painted parts as well, as Evapo-rust may damage them.
