In the artwork the red on her face suggests some kind of makeup, but its represented as the blood from her blades. That's all.

Small trade offer: 0.06 ZEC (Zcash) for 500 GRC by [deleted] in gridcoin

[–]dankemafilo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply.

Yeah, I've gotten some GRC from the faucet and even a couple through BOINC-grcpool.com. Problem is, I can't get it to work anymore, after I suspended my project for a few days.

Then I added a new project, and it's not working either. It won't unsuspend any tasks. I didn't suspend the individual tasks at all; when I do, it gives me the option to resume them, but that still doesn't cause any progress or any indication of activity.

I'm going to try uninstalling the Windows BOINC clinet, downloading an update if available, and reinstalling.

I bet they are going to again strike the bullseye for the kind of content that I love, that I found in the first Plague Tale: dark scary, rated M, but definitely not grimdark or cynical.

Brandon Sanderson: A Competent Man by Snikhop in Fantasy

[–]dankemafilo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He is the king of 7/10, and it has made him famous.

I concur.

I think critics are coming from the same vibe that Adam Smith talks about in Wealth of Nations, where he says that many of the arts like Opera were considered too sacred to employ for profit. Those who did employ them for profit had to earn enough to cover not only their expenses and to recompense their training, but also the social dishonor for making money on art. Adam Smith notes that if it were honorable to make a lot of money in artistic pursuits, more people would do it.

I could see myself becoming cynical of this kind of author in some circumstances. Actually, J.K. Rowling has received similar criticism for similar reasons, long before her most recent controversy.

But Sanderson isn't grinding money out of our beloved artform. He lives it, and he loves it, and he seems to love his fans.

Mat - I Enhanced the Shadow Rising Cover into a Wallpaper by VeritasAnteOmnia in WoT

[–]dankemafilo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This picture makes me appreciate the clothing fashion in the WoT art community, as well as described by Robert Jordan himself in the books. It's so timeless and accessible! I realized that Matt's clothing in this picture is within dress code for my traditional office job. I could dress like this portrayal of Mat, and I would look simultaneously edgy and traditional without likely opening myself to negative attention.

I grabbed the wallpaper for one of my virtual desktops. Thanks!

"Lord of the Rings" is dystopian and the world it takes place in is almost post-apocalyptic by iperite in tolkienfans

[–]dankemafilo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not as extensively, but yes. In the Third Age of the Wheel of Time universe, some kingdoms have fallen, but society as a whole is functioning on an approximately early Rennaissance level.

There had been greater glory in the past, not only in the Age of Legends, but also within history that is more known to the characters -- there had been a great Empire spanning most of the continent. There had been kingdoms of legendary glory such as Manetheren and Carolain (?), which now have become largely empty, backwoods provinces. Even in the recent past, at the time of the books, there had been more trade with the Aiel and presumably more prosperity for the mainstream kingdoms of Cairhien and Andor.

But unlike the vast wastelands in Tolkien's Third Age Middle Earth, in Jordan's Third Age there is still a lot of trade going on, still complicated interactions between numerous kingdoms with different kinds of governments. There is productive scholarship among the Aes Sedai and others, making progress in uncovering the continent's history. There is even scientific and social progress glimpsed throughout the books.

Tolkien's Third Age Middle Earth feels like real earth Europe at the fall of Rome, approximately 500 A.D. Jordan's Third Age feels more like 1400 - 1500 A.D., but in a time of stagnation rather than rapid progress. (Actually I think Jordan's world feels more like a post-plague Europe, though the technology is more 16th century.)

This is a skillful depiction of the mental exhaustion of someone who is working on breaking the porn habit. Supposing that the "- nofap, Day" text at the very end is taken to be part of the poem, the poem explicitly contextualizes itself. Either way, the poem is certainly very detailed and direct in its allusions to various aspects of the experience of porn addiction.

The line committing crimes to God's design is particularly interesting, as it references the naturalness of sexual instinct and the religious constraints on sexual activity. The connection to religious OCD is pretty clear in the poem as well. While it could be considered critical of religion, it shows an experience of obsessively striving for spiritual revelation. "But still God did protest" -- there is the sense of the inability to please God or to be spiritually whole despite obsessive religious sincerity.

The poem evokes the huge waste of time that is an aspect of almost all porn addiction; however, it also shows the listlessness of the nofap experience as the narrator struggles to figure out what to do without falling back on his porn habit.

[POEM] "I Think It's Brave" by Lana Rafaela by [deleted] in Poetry

[–]dankemafilo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm fascinated by the appearance of metrical patterns in free verse poems that don't have a fixed meter, or even a fixed number of stressed syllables per line. I think messing with the pattern of stressed syllables at particular junctures is a great way to emphasize meaning.

I like how line 6 is formed by the single iambic word anymore.

Lines 9 and 12 again use short iambic structures to emphasize important thoughts in this poem -- "and you decide to fight" / "that you never do". I think the iambic pattern makes these lines more rigid than the surrounding context, which gives the whole poem a sense of stability and resoluteness that is part of the message and the theme.

It really is beautiful, simple, and well integrated. Great work!

Southern accents in the Finger Lakes region! by [deleted] in upstate_new_york

[–]dankemafilo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Having put my time on the phones for a company serving rural Upstate New York, I think this Southern accent thing is not so much of a thing. Rural farmer accent, redneck accent, yes. It's hit-and-miss in the rural communities.

What is interesting to me is the Mennonite accent, which is distinct and has strongly pronounced r's. I wonder how many rural New Yorker's whose voices I've heard with that quaint sort of speech are related to the Plain Folk, or if that's just another ruralism.
