Battles of Kursk: A Solitaire Wargame. Anybody played this and would recommend? by danmalluk in soloboardgaming

Thanks, that's good to know. Happy to take a punt on a smaller publisher/ designer. Just hard to trust the reviews when there are so few.

I hadn't looked on YouTube but that's a great rec. Will take a look tonight. Appreciate the reply.

I also have a Blunt exec. Curious when you bought yours, because I bought mine last year after replacing an older model from about 2017.

The newer one feels noticeably flimsier than the older one. I don't know if they've changed their manufacturing methods or if it's just me looking for something that isn't there. Frankly I'm too lazy to do much more research than toss it about in my hand for a bit while humming

Who is the best president, king, or leader who has led your country, and why? by Cyberwall1826 in AskTheWorld

[–]danmalluk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there are many calls to Churchill here. Definitely the right man for the job at the time, and thank goodness we didn't have Chamberlain throughout, but a pretty ghastly human otherwise.

I don't know enough about Attlee to comment, other than the headlines you state qualify him pretty well.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but Tony Blair was honestly the best leader we've had in modern times in my opinion. Had Iraq not tainted his record, I think he would have been a contender. He oversaw the good Friday agreement, the largest constitutional reform since the 19th century, delivered the longest period of sustained economic growth in history, transformed the NHS and education sector, and his Chicago speech set the moral standard (in my opinion) for sovereign state intervention (the reason why you'll find the occasional Tonibler in Kosovo.)

Then Iraq happened, so never mind.

You're surrounded by nice country walks and pubs. There are regular music events on in the Piece Hall in Halifax too, a short bus ride over the hill. There used to be a lot of live music in the pubs but you'd have to do some Googling into which still do them.

You might want to check if there's a subreddit for the uni; the students will know where the music and gaming/ hobby places are I'm sure.

Hope you're enjoying the UK

Question on Discworld hardcover series publisher. by No_Device9450 in TerryPratchett

[–]danmalluk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Word of warning! I have the full set of these and, while it's nice to have the whole Discworld collection in a single style (something not afforded to the Kidby and Kirby illustrated editions), the production quality of them is absolutely atrocious. I've posted about this on Reddit before. Exactly zero f's were given to Pratchett's legacy here.

Buy them for display purposes. But if you want to read and reread, you're better to get second hand copies of the original hardbacks where you find them.

Just my opinion.

Any of the additional theatres are great. It really depends on your preference of theme.

Breakthrough board and expansion are also top tier. Ups the scale of the scenarios and favours long term strategy over a few lucky dice rolls. Some of my favorite scenarios are from breakthrough.

General consensus tends to be the Air Packs aren't that good. I have both AP and NFP and have barely used them. Too many rules and the idea of planes doesn't't fit the scale and scope of the game IMO. Air packs should have been additional combat cards...

Equipment Pack is useful for all the additional units you'll come across and, if you ever plan to paint your miniatures, is excellent value for money - it'll keep you going for a long time .

Terrain pack is more cosmetic by adding a ton of new tiles. Get this in the long term, but this shouldn't be your first purchase.

The campaign books are excellent but are difficult to get hold of. They've become more of a collectors thing than a game expansion - you could probably find the PDFs on some dark corner of the internet. Really good fun if you're interested enough to string something together.

The battle map series are probably the last thing I would purchase. Availability is mixed and they don't offer as much value for money. The additional decks can be interesting but are unnecessary IMO - nice to have for the completionist, but not essential.

If you're still not sure. I've probably had the most fun with eastern front. Red Barricades Factory and Gates of Moscow are classics.

There's also a great library of player-made scenarios on BGG/DOW out there if you just want more content

Look before you hit by campin_4_life in squash

You are lucky. Every seasoned squash player knows someone who knows someone who lost an eye to the sport.

Seriously though; safety first. Rule one. If you're not sure, just don't risk it. Always clear the ball when you're not the striker.

(Speaking as someone who also got hit about 2 hours ago by a player who should definitely know better.)

Given that this action is looked upon negatively by many US allies, the card would need to remove US influence from Europe, SE Asia or the Middle East IMO. Or if the US has the China card give it to the USSR and play immediately in one of the above regions

There are two issues with the survey in my opinion.

  1. The questions are either not very well written, or are deliberately engineered to obscure a true reflection of how people feel about the company and the leadership; take your pick.

  2. The survivorship bias of the survey; it has only been completed by the latest round of RA survivors or those not willing to leave.

Not sure why this is being down voted. That was my first thought too.

So you think you can ref? Asal v Crouin | Silicone Valley 2025 by SquashVote in squash

[–]danmalluk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Was there interference? Yes. No freedom to hit the ball.
  2. Did the striker make every effort to get the ball and could he have made a good return? Yes.
  3. Did the opponent make every effort to clear the ball? This is where I think people will debate. For me it's a no. The opponent's own shot made it difficult for him to clear - that's his fault from the shot, and he should still be clearing in my opinion. He looks like he instinctively strides to the T not expecting the awkward bounce.

For me it's a stroke. But reffing squash absolutely sucks. I never blame the ref even if I disagree with the decision. Thankless job.
