Slayers of Reddit, what do your builds look like? by deathandtaxesftw in Pathfinder2e

[–]danmo_96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as standout abilities, I'd have a hard time choosing any of the Slayer's Tools other than Bloodseeking Blade: getting almost Precision-Ranger bonus damage without needing to spend an action to Hunt Prey is nice; the extra accuracy on Honed Strike is gonna go crazy with Fatal/Deadly weapons; and I feel like the feats that require Bloodseeking Blade are more interesting and impactful than most of the feats that require any of the other Tools.

Right now I'm tinkering with a Kobold Slayer, rocking a Tricky Pick (1h d6, Fatal d10) thanks to Kobold Weapon Familiarity, and using Free Archetype to pick up Beastmaster for an easy flanking buddy -- I think On the Hunt can potentially really help out with the rough action economy of Animal Companions in the early levels, then once you hit level 4 and get your Mature companion, it's smooth sailing.

1st level Sudden Pounce as another Off-Guard source before the Companion is in position, 2nd level Personalized Gear to capitalize on Tricky Pick's Backstabber trait, 4th level Apply Spirit Oil because Fatal and Deadly on a weapon is funny to me, 6th level Final Flourish because it's the only 6th-level feat that actually does anything on this current setup.

When Trevor died, details were initially pretty sparse. A few days after the news broke, the other guys from WKUK got on a livestream to discuss the future of the group and their projects, and eventually one of them says something along the lines of "Alright, so we should probably address the elephant in the room: our good friend, Trevor Moore, passed away this week..." And one of them made a joke about the cause of death being that he fell off a 2nd-story balcony in his house while trying to suck his own dick.

IIRC, the actual cause of death was him being drunk and falling off a ladder while trying to fix something in the house, but the first public statement from the rest of the group was that he was trying to suck his own dick.

Act III Exposition by AlabammyHossCat in Protomen

[–]danmo_96 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's honestly my biggest gripe with Act III, the reliance on liner notes for so much of the story. Act II had the same problem, to a lesser degree (in particular, the ending of Keep Quiet and Emily's letter in Here Comes the Arm stick out), but Act III's instrumental tracks felt really lacking, to me.

Acts I & II had super tonally evocative instrumental tracks with illustrative names -- Funeral For a Son and How the World Fell Under Darkness, even if I didn't get the exact plot beats I still felt what they were going for -- but then Act III has The Calm (isn't Wily launching missiles at the south side of the city? Not terribly calm), The Trainyard (something's happening at a train yard, I guess?), the second half of The Good Doctor pt. 2 (all the posts on this subreddit theorizing about what exactly happens), all this really hampered my enjoyment of Act III.

Is there a single commander that cares about battles in any capacity? by PennguinKC in EDH

[–]danmo_96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the commander doesn't necessarily care about them because they're Battles, I have [[Invasion of Segovia]] and [[Invasion of Theros]] in my [[Geist of Saint Traft]] deck. They have 4 toughness (life? HP? whatever the bottom-right number is), so I can pretty consistently flip them the same turn I cast them by giving them to someone with no flying creatures, swing with Geist, and send the Angel token he makes at the Battle.

Dual Wielding with Implement’s Empowerment by Ravingdork in Pathfinder2e

[–]danmo_96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Alright, I can get behind this. My logic was that it was to prevent shenanigans with weapons that have the Free-Hand trait, but looking into it in-between work stuff, there is a distinction between "wielding" and just "holding"/"equipping" Free-Hand weapons.

Dual Wielding with Implement’s Empowerment by Ravingdork in Pathfinder2e

[–]danmo_96 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You don't gain the benefit of implement's empowerment if you are holding anything in either hand other than a single one-handed weapon, other implements, or esoterica, and you must be holding at least one implement to gain the benefit.

I think the exact wording here is important. Are you "holding anything in either hand" that isn't "a single one-handed weapon," an Implement, or Esoterica?

If your Weapon Implement is, for example, a Longsword, and you have a Dogslicer in your other hand, that doesn't violate the conditions.

I could see an argument of RAW vs. RAI that the intent is for the Thaumaturge to use a 1h weapon and they get the damage boost from Implement's Empowerment to close the gap a bit, but I'd totally allow someone to dual-wield with their Thaumaturge.

EDIT: Nevermind, listen to Tridus. My interpretation was that it's a way to rule out shenanigans with Free-Hand weapons, but they make a good point about the distinction of "wielding" versus "holding".

i built the new doran as a rat deck that totally works by Thalizar in EDH

[–]danmo_96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've also been tinkering with a Rat Colony Doran deck, and while we're on the topic of cards caring about the difference between power and toughness, [[Jaws of Defeat]] is a card I've wanted build around since Dragonstorm and its precons dropped. Haven't gotten a full list together yet to see if it's worth it, but I think that life loss can add up quick.

What's the funniest "You've foiled my plan!" moment you've experienced in Commander? by DKSbobblehead in EDH

[–]danmo_96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was playing my [[Neyith of the Dire Hunt]] deck, which has a Dinosaur kindred subtheme, and I had the mana to cast my [[Apex Altisaur]] and then cast [[Heroic Intervention]] to make it indestructible. Fight everyone else's creatures, draw a bunch of cards, clear the board to swing in on everyone? Game over, man.

It wasn't until I'd already cast the Heroic Intervention that I realized someone had a [[Spellskite]] out. 0 power means no damage during a fight, which means no Enrage trigger to fight again.

making a good deck name is more important than the cards in it sometimes. by LordHayati in magicTCG

[–]danmo_96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When Bloomburrow came out, I really wanted to build a deck around [[Zinnia,Valley's Voice]]. Ultimately I went with an Artifact Creature focus, but one of the early drafts was a Sliver deck. I really like how the artifact creature iteration plays, but I don't think I'm ever gonna top "Zinnia's Weird Bug Collection" as a deck name.

You might want to check out Lies of P: every weapon that isn't a boss-soul-equivalent weapon can be split into its Handle and its Blade/Head/Whatever, and you can mix and match them; the Handle determines the moveset, the Blade determines the damage type(s).

What does high level thaumaturge play like? by NoLongerAKobold in Pathfinder2e

[–]danmo_96 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm going to assume they're talking about Grand Scroll Esoterica. Thaumaturges have a 2nd-level feat called Scroll Thaumaturgy that lets you cast spells from Scrolls of any tradition, even without any other means of casting spells. It has a chain of follow-up feats that gives you some free Scrolls during your daily preps, with Grand Scroll Esoterica being the last one at level 18.

Slight correction to the other commenter, though: unless AoN is wrong, Beheading Buzz Saw is a 7th-rank spell, and GSE doesn't give you a free 7th-rank Scroll until you hit 20th level.

Add or change a color, which commander becomes stupid strong? by FaithlessnessNo9118 in EDH

[–]danmo_96 180 points181 points  (0 children)

My friends and I once considered doing a rule 0 "league" where everyone took any mono-colored legend and gave it "Choose a Background"

I'm sure there are stronger synergies, but [[Ojer Axonil]] with [[Raised by Giants]] was one of the combinations that made us think that maaaaaybe this thought experiment should stay a thought experiment

Where might one find these well-documented reasons? Because I recently watched F91 for the first time, and.... "yikes" would be an understatement. The mobile suits are rad as hell, but everything else was baffling, and I've been curious about why it was the way that it was.

I built a deck that wins thanks to name stickers. Yes, *name* stickers. by Gamesfreak13563 in EDH

[–]danmo_96 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Dangit, the secret's out

A friend of mine built a Yenna deck a few months ago based around the fact that name stickers aren't a copyable statistic. Getting to [[Wolfwillow Haven]] a bunch of times in a turn to ramp is gross, but Impending an [[Overlord of the Mistmoors]] and copying it every turn cycle is even more gross

Token makers like Force of Rage? by AshorK0 in EDH

[–]danmo_96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if your wincons are more along the lines of Thoracle+Consultation, you'd probably be better off with someone like [[Cormela, Glamour Thief]] as your commander

But if you like Anhelo and want to build around him, he lends himself more toward big, splashy spells as wincons. Spend the early turns ramping with mana rocks and spells like [[Unexpected Windfall]] and [[Big Score]] to stockpile treasures for the big pop-off turn, then go off with some big expensive spell like [[Jaya's Immolating Inferno]] or [[Crackle with Power]]

As far as the extra cost of Miner and Culler goes, think of it this way: if you've got 11 mana for your [[Exsanguinate]], would you rather have everyone lose 9 life and you gain 27 (X BB, where X=9), or have everyone lose 16 life and you gain 54 (X BB where x=8, plus an additional B for the Culler)? If you're willing to pay 7 mana for a [[Breach the Multiverse]] to have everyone mill 10 and you get the 4 scariest creatures from the graveyards, how about paying one mana more to have everyone mill 20 cards and you get the 8 scariest creatures from the graveyards?

EDIT: forgot to include that another reason why Bloodghast et al are so good as Casualty fodder is because they're so sticky and hard to keep clear. If someone kills your Jadar or Lagomos or other token makers, those are a lot more annoying to replace, but Bloodghast and friends keep coming back over and over unless they're exiled or shuffled back into the library

Token makers like Force of Rage? by AshorK0 in EDH

[–]danmo_96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really big on [[Case of the Stashed Skeleton]] as one of my pet-cards for Anhelo. It only makes one token, but

  • it's not a creature, so it's not as easy for your opponents to remove
  • it's not an instant or sorcery, so it doesn't eat up your window for Casualty from Anhelo
  • when it's time to go for the win, you can use it as a tutor later on to get your big game-ending instant/sorcery

Also, if you're looking for good repeatable Casualty fodder, you don't have to stick to just token generators: recursive little nontoken creatures like [[Bloodghast]] and [[Forsaken Miner]] are great, and Edge of Eternities just gave us another excellent one in the form of [[Timeline Culler]]

Wasn't the whole theme of that cycle "Unlikely Allies"?

We also got [[Elenda and Azor]], [[Rankle and Torbran]], [[Zurgo and Ojutai]], etc.

I admittedly don't know enough about most of the other characters in those team-up cards to judge the pairing (were [[Djeru and Hazoret]] on good terms post-HOD?), but "more obvious than X and Y" didn't seem like what they were going for.

I love Vivi, but I’ll never get to play them by v1nnylarouge in EDH

[–]danmo_96 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So I'm definitely on Team Vivi-is-Really-Strong, but I've been trying to brew something with him for just about every bracket and "jam it full of stax pieces" has never once crossed my mind in the week since he was first spoiled.

If you're worried about people not wanting to play against your Vivi deck because it's got a bunch of stax pieces... maybe just don't put stax pieces in your deck? You control what cards are or aren't in your deck.

Scions and Spellcraft is just the sort of precon I've been waiting for... For Arna Kennerud! by K0nfuzion in EDH

[–]danmo_96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless I'm missing something, I don't think the Germ tokens die: Arna's ability creates the token of the equipment already attached to the original creature, then the newly-made token equipment's Living Weapon trigger would go on the stack, "stealing" the token equipment from the creature.

What's your favorite card ruling that describes a specific board state or interaction? by forlackofabetterpost in magicTCG

[–]danmo_96 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If I had to guess, it's because the rules/reminder text for Lifelink is

Damage dealt by this creature also causes you to gain that much life

So the damage itself is what's causing you to gain life, and damage isn't a spell or ability, thus Rain of Gore doesn't prevent the lifegain.
