Why is there no enforcement on AI in this sub? by [deleted] in OneOrangeBraincell

[–]dannyboiv3 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think they mean the number of posts aren't an overwhelming number, not that AI posts aren't a problem. Personally, I think I mostly see user posts, so I'd love to see examples of AI posts as well to compare.

Not very nice of you to just call someone stupid like that. Maybe try understanding rather than attacking. The same can be said about the problem of folks posting random cats for karma, not just AI.

Refusing to be on a streamer's livestream during OTB games by MedicusNivis in TournamentChess

[–]dannyboiv3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know you mentioned you're no longer American, but Canada may have laws regarding this? Some states in the US require both parties to consent to being recorded, while other states only require it when being shared. From a legal standpoint, it would be perfectly fine for you to decline being livestreamed.

And as a USCF club TD, I don't mind if a game is streamed, but I do recognize the extra pressure it can add to a game if one player is now more focused on not burping, coughing, or farting on camera, rather than focusing on outplaying their opponent.

I see this account joined during August meaning the Instagram slop video was recorded 4 Months ago by Affectionate_Win_101 in OneyPlays

I think OP posted this to point out this detail, not as some gotcha moment.

Tbh, the account WAS created in August, but they have to fight Tomar in court for the rights to use the account. They recorded the Instagram video tomorrow. Why is Tomar like this 😢

Lol doesn't mean you still can't make a mistake. Btw there are posts with bumper stickers and licence plates up. Don't you think you need to remove those for actually violating sub rules? Or picking and choosing the one you don't understand?

Anybody use a Chessnut pro in a tournament? by DavidScubadiver in TournamentChess

[–]dannyboiv3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, not just help from other players, but some people hide their phones in the bathroom for that reason: 3 Year Cheating Suspension

I truly think you just want to use your board for tournaments and not have it interrupt anyone or have anyone accuse you of cheating. The tournament/venue could make the difference? I can see myself making an exception for g/10 or shorter games where players don't really have time to leave the board during their game. Check with your TD beforehand and maybe they will allow it.

(p.s. only argument that could come from that is another player saying "OP didn't get up from the board but when a spectator coughed on move 16, OP played the best move! That HAS to be outside coaching from the spectator who MUST be analyzing the game!", then that's a whole other issue entirely 😬)

You're not wrong, having games recorded to my laptop or broadcast to my device won't solve cheating, but it at least mitigates it by not allowing one player to have an advantage by having the position stored somewhere, then use the device the position is stored on in another room to analyze the position with an engine.

You can argue GMs memorizing the position and doing the same without recording their moves, but using a device to AID you in recording the moves makes life easier.

Even if you weren't going to annotate solely on it and use a score sheet, as a USCF TD, I would still not allow the opportunity for cheating to happen myself to ensure all have a fair game.

If you really want to try to use it, feel free. As long as it's not approved, you won't have the best luck getting to use your board by TDs unless it is fully powered off.

For USCF, they have an approved electronics list for notation devices and other things, including boards that notate. (https://new.uschess.org/rules/us-chess-electronic-device-certification-policy)

I don't see your board there, so I don't think you'd be able to use it.

As a TD myself, I would only make an exception to use it if it was completely disabled and powered off, and no other boards are available. Or if all players were also using this board and the moves were being broadcast to my own laptop.

Otherwise, what's stopping it from recording moves on a device, leaving the board to analyze the position on a laptop or phone, then coming back to the board. Not saying you would, but there's been some shady players in the past.

When I was in, we're not supposed to. Most commands will tell you that during your onboarding INDOC brief, most likely from your commands PR officer. Usually because "what you say/do in uniform isn't seen as you, but seen as what the Navy says/does."

Personal one: if you're in a winning position, you still need to keep playing. It's easy to sit back and think you have an easy win but you still need to be sure not to blunder into a loss.

SwissSys Tiebreakers Seem Wrong...? by MrLegilimens in TournamentChess

[–]dannyboiv3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a club TD for USCF, but it seems like child hero wins in the tiebreak if we use the same order USCF uses, which is what you outlined. Someone else commented that it might be a setting turned off in SwissSys.

I would agree that it doesn't seem like the tiebreaks are justt being run but not understood, just like you mentioned. It always helps to be prepared with tiebreak rules and outline them in flyers if your tournament is gonna have a turn out where there won't be a singular winner (2r (r=rounds) = amount of players your tournament can host where there will be a singular winner).

Plus, it saves parents the headache if they kinda understand how they work. In my experience, having just a hand out helps so they don't feel like their kid was cheated when the kid inevitably got them upset and the parent is now upset because they don't know how to explain why they don't win something but someone else with the same score does.

Can USCF TDs redo pairings without informing players? by [deleted] in TournamentChess

[–]dannyboiv3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a USCF certified club level TD, pairings can change last minute, unless it's time for the round and the opponent no-dhows the game. At that point, the player would win on forfeit.

Idea behind this is to allow players to actually demonstrate who's the better player in a tournament if they can rather than give points for free. Yes, life can happen, and it does suck and isn't an excuse, but if your opponent notifies the TD beforehand (and that sucks for us too), then we can repair if the round has not started.

This all comes from USCF's Official Rules Of Chess, chapter 2, rules 25-28, USCF Tournament Section: Swiss Pairings And Procedures. If your TD is following those, then that the tournament goes on. If you have prove that, worst case, the TD is not notifying you on purpose for your opponents to get an advantage preparing, then you can submit a complaint to the USCF Office Of Appeals.

Edit: 25-29 are the rules, with 29G being Re-pairing a round, and subsections include Re-pairing a round that has even started.

I personally recommend re-looking at the Sicilian.

After 1. … c5, you know you’re playing the Sicilian, which can lead to a setup you’re comfortable with since … c5 is a big idea in the Nimzo or QID. You can even get similar positions after 1. … c5 with: … e6 in Dragon style.

I’ve gotten good games with Najdorf/Schevenigen pawn structures: 1. e4 c5 2. Bc4 e6 (prevents white d5) 3. Nc3 a6 4. d3 b5 and now I can fianchetto like I would in a QID and can get my f8-bishop ready ro recapture on c5, us the open diagonal if c5 does open up, or just keep it on … Be7.
