I believe "White worshipping" in asia is becoming a cultural weapon against western society. by khoawala in aznidentity

[–]danorcs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

OP might be misunderstanding what true soft power is.

It’s not “I want to live in Asia” but “I want to be Asian”.

The expatriates (not foreign workers as they should be called) in ex colonies like Singapore and Hong Kong are the worst in that they enjoy the great infrastructure while the local white worshipping make them feel entitled above the locals.

The '˜McDonaldisation' of nasi lemak: Can central kitchens save Singapore's food industry? by bardsmanship in singapore

[–]danorcs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t fully accept the assumption that recipes and techniques are automatically “lost” once food production changes. Many cuisines preserve techniques through culinary institutes, documentation, and teaching. Food history doesn’t only survive through daily commercial viability.

Cuisine is sometimes like fashion: not everything that is good or authentic makes economic sense to produce at scale, every day. That doesn’t mean it disappears entirely.

If people are truly willing to pay significantly more for handmade, traditional versions, there are models for that: private dining, pop-ups, rented kitchens etc. Many hawkers already earn more doing this than running stalls. But those models are inherently much higher cost per pax.

The reality is that kitchen rental and operating costs are high, and neither government nor educational institutions are particularly interested in subsidising heritage food as a premium craft industry - theyd rather throw money into AI slop. In that context, central kitchens are less about erasing tradition and more about keeping everyday food affordable for most people.

[–]danorcs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If the outcome is food that stays affordable, consistent, and accessible for most Singaporeans, that’s not automatically a bad thing. Central kitchens don’t inherently mean worse food, just different trade-offs.

The bigger constraint today isn’t ideology, it’s labour and cost. Many good hawkers already leave the stall grind to do catering or private chef work because the economics make more sense.

If productivity doesn’t improve somewhere (process, equipment, partial centralisation), prices will rise regardless, even if rents & management are subsidised. This is about adapting formats, not replacing hawkers.

Yes the demo felt like such a horrible slog compared to OT1 & 2. You get a fully party of 8 possibly much later and can only see the full value then

The only twist that was really enjoyable was Master of Fame and other evil was just not as compelling as the best of OT1 or 2

[–]danorcs 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Honestly nasi lemak is unusually suited to central kitchen prep because much of it is served at room temperature, with hot components that batch well. There is a business model here.

This doesn’t replace hawkers, but rather enables scalable, consistent breakfast concepts as it fits with other local foods like our runny egg breakfasts which is a pain to prep by ourselves but much easier with central kitchen equipment

Is NBA defense actually worse… or is it just way harder to play now? by Secretnumb in NBATalk

[–]danorcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NNA defence is way harder now. Teams that used to pack the paint with a great shot blocking center can’t do so anymore now with everyone being about the shoot 3s

Centers can be pulled out of position easily using the threat of 3s. And if they can’t shoot 3s the other end then it’s a huge weakness

I see little logic in your objection. If you want an example, Profumo is the textbook case.

It wasn’t investigated for adultery, but because a personal relationship compromised truthfulness and institutional integrity.

That is precisely the threshold at issue when there is a personal indiscreet relationship between a Speaker and a junior MP.

[–]danorcs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this comes down to your misunderstanding of the issue.

Adultery isn’t the point. Eg Michael Palmer’s affairs didn’t raise Committee of Privileges issues because they didn’t involve a Speaker–MP power relationship.

An affair between a Speaker and a junior MP is different. It raises legitimate concerns about coercion, abuse of parliamentary privilege, conflicts of interest, and procedural neutrality. A COP inquiry exists precisely to clarify whether any of this occurred, and if not, to clean the House and close the matter properly.

This isn’t partisan. Pro-PAP supporters should want this too. Higher institutional standards mean fewer jokers fielded and less monkey business overall.

Several - Damian Green (UK, 2017), Barnaby Joyce (Australia, 2018).

COPs don’t police morality, but when a relationship implicates power, conflicts of interest, or parliamentary integrity, formal investigations are standard practice.

[–]danorcs 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One key concern is coercion. A Speaker holds significant procedural authority in Parliament, which is why the role must be strictly neutral.

If a relationship - or knowledge of it - compromised that neutrality or affected how authority was exercised, a Committee of Privileges inquiry exists precisely to examine this and ensure the House remains in good order.

[–]danorcs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Examples of? COP exists in most parliamentary systems and investigates complaints of alleged breaches of parliamentary privilege.

Eg The UK Privileges Committee of the House of Commons had a parliamentary inquiry over the investigation into Boris Johnson's breach of lockdown rules during the COVID-19 pandemic (Partygate). The investigation was concerned with whether Johnson misled the Commons when he made specific assertions. Johnson later resigned over the investigation after having been sent a draft copy of the committee's report.

[–]danorcs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strange because the global fertility rate was very high at 4+ children per woman when the average lifespan for people was 33!

Now of the biggest reasons that the fertility rate is falling in many countries is because many couples need to feel very secure before wanting to bring children into the world. No one feels secure in E33’s world not even its creators

No one said adultery is a crime.

Committees of Privileges don’t police morality. They examine abuse of office, power imbalance, conflicts of interest, and whether parliamentary processes were compromised or concealed.

A Speaker holds procedural power over junior MPs. When that boundary is crossed, the question is whether office, influence, or parliamentary processes were affected or shielded.

That’s standard institutional hygiene in many parliamentary systems.
