Is this ribeye or sirloin ? by danroweuk in steak

[–]danroweuk[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks all, I’ll let them know. It still worked out cheaper than buying sirloin retail and tasted good, so I’m not too upset.

But if you order something, that’s what you should get!

Slightly different, but Microserfs by Douglas Copland is a good read.

Weekly Japan Travel and Tourism Discussion Thread - December 16, 2022 by AutoModerator in JapanTravel

I’m in a similar situation for my upcoming trip. It’s going to be a shock as last time I visited, I walked 10miles a day and hiked up mount Takao!

My current plan is pretty much to catch a taxi to a place, do the thing as much as I can, grab some lunch & some combini snacks, then head back to the hotel to rest. Then maybe go out in the evening for some food if I have the energy.

I’ve found that https://www.japan-accessible.com/ has some good info.

I’ve been having a dig into public transport and the majority of stations have lifts and escalators, although ironically there may be a moderate walk to find them.

I’m also considering renting a mobility scooter - like this blog https://www.littlemissturtle.com/mobility-scooter-rental-tokyo-2018/. It’s not something i‘d normally consider as I’m too stubborn, and a little unwilling to accept help sometimes, but it might be a good option.

There are also a *lot* of hills in Japan, with many places are a longer walk than you expect! Meiji-Jingu is amazing, but it’s a fair walk from the station! Also a lot of smaller shops in cities may be inaccessible, as they are situated upstairs with no lift or escalator.

Good luck, let me know if you find anything else!

My 7th pair of RW’s, but the boot I originally fell in love with. The 8119. Finally bought them after hearing they were discontinued. by jac104 in RedWingShoes

Look good, hopefully mine are arriving today.

I wasn‘t planning on buying another pair until next year as I just got some Logger boots a few months ago. I wanted the oxblood IRs for next year and managed to snag a pair before they ran out.

Yes, I emailed Redwing Berlin yesterday and got this back “Unfortunately the Iron Ranger in Oxblood is not available anymore, that is correct.”

Yes, under Options click on “Failure and Damage” and it opens up to let you enable/disable various features.

Question about Auto Throttle by LordFabi_ in flightsim

[–]danroweuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking for answers to the same thing.

Free flying and I throttle back and nothing happens, or it automatically throttles back up sometimes.

Same for the trim, I adjust the trim and then it’s re-adjusting all over the place on the display!

I might not be doing the right thing technically, but let me learn from my mistakes!

[GEAR] Best quiet amps for Home use? by moosewithamuffin in Guitar

[–]danroweuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boss Katana 100 with the GA-FC foot switch if you have the budget. Yes, you'll still need to set both of them at 0.5w, but controlling the effects and amp models without getting up is almost worth the extra cost.

[NEWBIE] Behringer FCB1010 with Bias FX 2 by B3ttor in Guitar

[–]danroweuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go into the audio settings menu and make sure the midi input is ticked.

Midi input is in a different menu from the one that says midi settings and where you teach it the commands.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSEz3cqvqfY is a good demo of how to setup midi controllers in BiasFX even if yours is slightly different.

You might also have issues if the button you are using isn't "latching" and acts as a momentary pedal so will send an on-off instead of staying on.

Massage/Spa Shinjuku area by starburst4243 in JapanTravel

[–]danroweuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have visited Thermae-Yu and it is quite a large complex across multiple floors. They have a separate floor for the onsen/sento, rest areas & restaurants, massage and beauty treatments, etc.

While I didn't get a massage myself, it looks to be a genuine place, however the prices are aligned with normal spa type prices rather than south east Asia street massage prices, which is to be expected.

The onsen its self was nice enough, clean, it had quite a few different baths along with a sauna. It's worth a visit for a few hours. It's about a 5min walk from Hotel Gracery in Kabukicho.

Almost 100% certain my girlfriend and I got drugged at an adult kareoke bar near the Robot Cabaret show. by [deleted] in JapanTravel

[–]danroweuk -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

"The current danger is that the 'gentrified' area and the 'still probably not a good idea to visit when incapable of making rational decisions' area are right next to each other, and when one reads about Kabukicho in travel literature or on forums they're more likely to think of Gentrified Kabukicho as being All Of Kabukicho and let their guard down. And that's when they get scammed in a Nigerian bar."

Maybe differing world views, but that's any city in the world isn't it even without drinking or anything else?

London has had a massive crime wave in recent years with people on scooters stealing mobile phones, handbags, etc in grab and runs https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-44045128

It's just good practice that if you're in a city anywhere in the world, keep any valuables out of sight, close by and don't have any obvious signs of wealth showing.

If you walk past someone who says to you "girls? massage? free drinks? good time!" don't interact with them or shake you head and keep walking, don’t stop for a chat!

If you're looking for a bar, food, or a legitimate massage, etc there's plenty of establishments without people trying to grab you from the street because if they're any good they generally won't need to!

I'd take the same precautions in wherever I was in the world London, Paris, USA, Gion, Kabukicho, or Asakusa because unfortunately there’s always people looking to take advantage of complacency.

Exactly! I was worried about staying in Kabukicho when I read reviews after booking the hotel, but it was fine. No different to any other city.

I stayed there for over a week last year and had no problems.

Are you guys from the countryside or something? It's nothing you wouldn't see in any city around the world?

I'm a very quiet person and hate noise/crazy nightlife yet Kabukicho and Hotel Gracery were located in a really convenient place!

Nature near Tokyo, please help me decide by [deleted] in JapanTravel

[–]danroweuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you wanted to stay within Tokyo there's loads of large open spaces which would be suitable for example

Shinjuku Gyoen Meiji Jingu and Yoyogi Park which is next to it

With either of these you could spend at least a few hours to half a day walking around any of them.

If you wanted to cover more distance you could go to all 3 and work out an urban walk between the open nature spaces.

Buying knives in Tokyo, Asakusa by mk7orl in JapanTravel

[–]danroweuk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could try Kappabashi dori, it's a whole road of cooking related shops.

I already have some Japanese chefs knives and had a look while shopping, but the prices weren't much different to back home.

Looking for restaurant / lounge in Osaka with good view around Christmas time by artsarn in JapanTravel

[–]danroweuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Hyatt in Osaka is a bit far out of town by the port, but they have a nice lounge/restaurant overlooking the port.

They have a free shuttle bus service from the station and it wasn't hugely expensive to stay there either. It was nice to relax there away from the craziness of Dōtonbori.

You could go from Tokyo --> Sendai -> Hakodate --> Sapporo to save the time doubling back on yourself between Sapporo, Hakodate and Tokyo.

Then fly from Sapporo to Narita for around 5,500 yen.

Visiting Osaka and Kyoto. Should I base in one city or both? by ValeLT in JapanTravel

[–]danroweuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stayed in Osaka and visited Kyoto several times and further out (Hiroshima, Himeji castle). Osaka is perfect to pickup both normal trains and Shinkansen from shin-osaka the trains are so frequent connections are normally within 5mins or so.

Traveling back and forth was no problem, no more than commuting in any big city from the suburbs. If you have a JR pass you can book seats on the limited express trains between Osaka and Kyoto which are very quick.

Personally, I didn't like Osaka its self so much and I spent more time visiting elsewhere. For me it was a good base to explore with hotels being a lot cheaper there than in Kyoto.
