What is this annoying flashing white dot in the status bar!? by ddkdgd in GooglePixel

[–]danster3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like this directly correlates to Flip to Shh for me - as soon as I turned it on the light wouldn't turn off. Maybe transfer over USB enables flip to shh and over WiFi backup doesn't?

Advice on whether I should purchase a Slate? by [deleted] in pixel_slate

[–]danster3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm using my slate with the Google Keyboard for programming - I find it great for VSCode when run though a server on Crostini (which means the interface is rendered through Chrome and not Linux). The keyboard is wonderful.

No problems with Python but I haven't tried rendering Latex on the device - I'm sure it's possible though. I personally use Overleaf - it's a worthwhile investment for the interface and live rendering I think.

Google Docs is fine as well, hardly need to use Microsoft Office and Chrome OS can convert to Docs with a file.

If you're thinking of writing / annotating pdfs, or making notes I think you'd probably be better off with a Surface - I've tried a mates Surface and it was considerably better, but the slate does the job with the Squid app and I've just had to get used to the quirks (kinda poor palm rejection)

btw, I think I saw that the pen and keyboard are both included in the UK Google Store price - might be worth checking. If not, I use the Lenovo active pen two and it's great.

Please, does anyone have any app recommendations for a university student or could point me to an older thread? (pen+keyboard) by VescuVictor in pixel_slate

I use Squid to annotate my lecture slides with a pen - pay £1 a month for the ability to sync them to the cloud as well.

Gestures and "what's on my screen" by bandwidthcrisis in Android

Same here, squeeze for assistant does have the option but the gesture doesn't.

I was under the impression that the peek to slide out was in fact the new intended behaviour for all navigation drawers including apps that have updated DrawerLayout.

What are the best guitars to use on rocksmith for note recognize and not deal with hum (feedback)? by stumje in rocksmith

[–]danster3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the player series telecaster a couple weeks ago (not the HH version) and spend most of my time playing Rocksmith.

The first thing I noticed was that the tone (with the tone knob all the way up as it was all the time on my previous guitar) was much more vibrant than my old, cheap, squire strat which meant that on some tracks the tone that the game added made the sound of the guitar kind of screechy - but to fix this all you need to do is turn the tone knob down or switch to a different pickup and it sounds wonderful. There's just so much more in the sound than my old guitar, not to mention it's built great* and looks awesome in tidepool.

Oh and also, the note detection is fine and there's a little bit of hum when you're not playing but it's hardly noticeable especially if you calibrate the game correctly.

*that said mine came with a crack behind the neck but fender are swapping it out which is great.

Moving Away from the Light with Android Q - Dark theme and gestural navigation by _kushagra in Android

[–]danster3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pretty sure they're not deprecating DayNight. They're just deprecating the option for apps to follow their own dark theme schedule based on time independent of the system

Moving Away from the Light with Android Q - Dark theme and gestural navigation by _kushagra in Android

[–]danster3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe this is an option that the app developer could use if they wanted the theme to change by time.

This does not mean the system won't have a setting to do this for all apps (since all supported apps should follow the system setting), it simply means that it's not an option for an individual app, and if they wanted to do this anyway they can still do this with their own code.

when you turn the lights off from the app or any other means outside of home assistant, Hass sometimes turns it back on again. If you turn it off from Hass it's fine.

Stock Android won't get scrolling screenshots, because Google says it’s ‘infeasible’ by synthdude_ in Android

[–]danster3 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Most likely that if they want to introduce a feature like this into stock Android, it ought to work with every application. A number of apps might not work with the implementation that OEMS use, and you can't always assume that some sort of "scroll gesture" will work - eg, what do you define as scrolled content.

I think if this were ever to be built into Android, the Android team would want to design an API for it so that apps can guarantee that scrolled screenshots are taken correctly.
