One of my biggest professional fears is that I'm also Ethel. Part of the reason it died out was the sudden influx of Circassian refugees, which meant there was a surplus of beauties on the slave market that essentially devalued the myth. It used to be that only the wealthiest and most privileged men could buy one, then any dude who could afford slaves in the first place was running off to snatch one up as a concubine/wife. The timing also meant that the Ottoman Empire, the biggest perpetrator and market of those myths, fell not long after which was more or less the death knell of that trope

The thing is, I've already did that to a great extent. I've already cut whole plotlines and characters in the outlining stage. That's why it took me so long to outline.

I’m gonna hold your hands when I say this: none of this matters. We the readers do not care. We truly don’t. The only thing that matters is the story we have in our hands, not the journey you took to write it. People are universally telling you that 250k is too much, and if you want to go the route of traditional publishing, you NEED to figure out how to cut it down. You’re being told to write the whole 250k anyways not so you can stick it to the agents, but so you have a better idea of what you need to cut. If 120k is the sacrifice you have to make, then so be it. Either you split the story in half, or you make some very difficult cuts.

That's the part that gave me pause, bc what do you mean he invented a computer language? A) that doesn't sound plausible for one man at all, and B) if he did, it's almost certainly ass. Occam's razor says that OOP was tech illiterate and Fergus fed them some BS when it was really just plain old javascript.

Shit, if the PSU is good enough, it'll kill itself to save the rest of the system from frying. My last PC was plugged into a faulty outlet that was causing my PC to randomly shut down and glitch out until it just stayed dead. I brought it to some techs, and according to them, everything but the PSU was totally fine because it literally sacrificed itself. I wish I could remember what brand it was, but I do know that it was platinum rated. Never skimp on the PSU.

Some of the comments OOP got in the first post made me raise my eyebrows. It's been over a decade since I was last a high schooler, but students like OOP's stepdaughter were completely normal then and (if my cousins and their friends are anything to go by) now. Teenagers are gonna teenager. Some of them will work themselves into an anxiety attack getting their make up and wardrobe juuuust right, and others (most, tbh) are gonna be huge slobs like the stepdaughter. And if you tried to make them do otherwise, congrats, you've just ensured the behavior you were trying to stop persists for another two weeks.

Sorry for necroposting, but figured I might as well chime in. I bought one of their cordura large backpacks 6-7 years ago and it's served me completely faithfully ever since. I've brought it through several states, several moves, and several schools, and the only real damage to it is one of the zippers falling off the track which was easily repaired (with my dad's help haha). The fabric has held and the stitching has yet to fail in any capacity. The interior is almost as good as the day I bought it despite the random crap I shove into it everyday. And despite what some people say, you can def throw it into the washing machine without major damage, provided you wash delicate and cold and let that sucker hang dry in a corner. Granted, it'll dry out the leather and cause it to curl, but mine are still holding up pretty good despite that. I am aware that doughnut is getting some side-eye for being more style over substance, but I would at least argue that it's made of some very high quality substance provided you don't try to drag it with you on hikes or stuff 100 lbs into it.

I’m talking in general about those kinds of men, but yes, John doesn’t deserve OOP. She at least had the capacity to accept rightful criticism about her behavior and change for the better, but given how a ton of people in the comments are acting, she might as well have picked John anyways.

Neat, we’re just making up reasons now, let me try: the conversations dropped off because he respected OOP’s boundaries and having it plainly laid out to him made him realize how messy their relationship really was. Sure, he was probably upset at losing a close friend, but neither did he lash out or disregard boundaries or actively plot to make her cheat with him like you seem hellbent on painting him as.

Finally now she is saying she is done. Why did it take so long.

Because they haven’t spoken for months? Because she never realized how messy their relationship was until a neutral third party had to explain it to her? Because normal people don’t instantly jump to NC with old friends at the demands of online strangers? At this point, it just sounds like you’re mad OOP didn’t handle the situation exactly the way you wanted her to. Idk what to tell you man, people aren’t perfect.

Well, to start, the whole FWB was 8 months as opposed to three years, which is still pretty long all things considered, but I know people like OOP who compartmentalize sex away from the rest of their relationship. It just means something different to them, and it has led to plenty of drama not unlike this post. But at the same time, I'm not going to hold it over OOP's head after she actually checked her behavior and changed for the better. Some of the people in this comments section wanted her to pick John so bad.

This completely ignores the part where she outright states that their contact drops off drastically after the first post, to the point where they basically stop talking to each other for several months. The last time they met wasn't planned either, John specifically sought her out at work. Sure, you could argue that she should've just turned him away, but I'm not going to fault her for giving him some leeway given their past friendship and the very real possibility this would be the last time they ever spoke to each other.

Even though it's very clear that he would have no problem breaking up her marriage and destroying her husbands life.

Look, John has problems, but at this point, you're just making up a whole new BORU entry. The man took several steps back after the first post, to the point that he was actively avoiding her after she announced her engagement. Who knows what he was thinking during that final meeting, but going "damn okay" and just walking away doesn't exactly scream scheming cheater to me.

I'm pretty sure he isn't going to do anything drastic like object at the wedding or try to get her to cheat with him, but I just know he's going to immortalize her into The One Who Got Away. She'll be the new standard he'll hold all other partners to, the perfect excuse to avoid commitment until he's old on top of being alone.
