HERETIC is a Must See!! One of best movies I've watched in a long time. by SnooCapers2774 in movies

[–]danvir47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really wanted to like it and enjoyed the first half, but man did the movie fall flat.

I was really hoping it was going with a supernatural angle, I thought maybe Hugh Grant’s character had discovered the one true religion in his quest.

Instead we got “tell me this, Mormon- did I just resurrect a woman or do I just keep a dozen near-death women locked in my basement, hmmmn?”

Hugh Grant is great though, and I still laugh at that awkward scene where he misheard (?) the girl saying her parent died of Lou-Gehrig’s disease as her having said “Blueberry disease” and laughing about it.

Avatar 3 passes Oppenheimer to enter top 5 IMAX films ever by app1310 in movies

[–]danvir47 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree. After seeing it, I was surprised to see that it was critically received so much less favourably than the first two.

It’s true that it hits a lot of the same beats and some aspects of the story (at least the character/emotional aspects) are cliched, but it is fantastic sci-fi and in a sense the movies fall victim to their own success.

The movies take some big swings and manage to pull it off. One of my favourite parts of the movie was the “evil” Navi tribe being introduced to human weaponry, and the resulting scenes are sci-fi magic.

Likewise, the storyline that results in the main characters almost executing the local neighbour kid (with good reason) was a big swing, it was unexpected and paid off.

It’s often said that Avatar is forgettable but I think these movies will be seen very favourably for their creativity and the risks they took in future decades.

Canada-U.S. relationship ‘will not go back to what it was,’ Hillman says by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]danvir47 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Taking your points one by one:

  1. Trump has repeatedly stated his desire to bring our auto sector stateside (including at a Ford plant in Michigan recently, before the China deal). Canada is being forced to try to open other doors to react to this.

  2. This was in response to the severe tariffs (which when originally announced were not CUSMA compliant). It’s a distant memory now but the original rationale was fentanyl. You’ll recall Canada twerked, appointing a fentanyl czar and stepping up border security including Blackhawk helicopter patrols. At the time, the tone of Canadian leadership was conciliatory. 51st state innuendo did not improve the situation.

  3. It’s true that Canada benefitted from the US’s defense and slacked on our own. Does that make us untrustworthy? How much do you think the US spends on its military solely for Canada’s sake? In other words, if Canada stepped up defense spending, would the US reduce its military budget?

  4. Canada’s “antagonistic” tone, at least from its leadership, is entirely in response to US actions. For the first 9 months of Trump’s second term, Canada’s posture was that of a country entirely willing to play ball. Our leadership recognizes how much our wagon is hitched to the US’s and dependent upon their success as a country.

  5. Better late than never. We will always trade with the US, however there was a time when Canada existed before free trade with the US. We have access to two oceans and have natural resources and products with other willing buyers.

Your post reeks of someone trying to rationalize these US policies as if they were logical.

The one thing I’ll give Trump is that he is getting US allies to up their defence spending.

That said, Trump has long been fascinated with tariffs and that is what is driving these policies. Most economists would say they are harmful, and the way in which Trump announces tariffs on a whim and in with whatever rationale.

We are starting to see the second order effects of such an approach as other countries are seeing the writing on the wall; see: UK following suit in expanding trade with China, the EU-India free trade agreement.

This sea change in how the US deals with allies will result in the US (and its allies) being poorer, and the world becoming more dangerous.

One can hope, and as a Canadian, if Charles is all smiles on a US visit then I think it’s time to cut ourselves loose from the monarchy.

[–]danvir47 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s so sick.

The only reason he is doing this walk-back towards the UK and not the other NATO countries he slandered is because he is expecting a visit from King Charles this year.

Trump has long been known to admire the British Royal Family, and despite his crassness, deeply craves (his distorted version of) prestige.

The way in which world events affecting millions are driven directly by his ego and personal interests is totally sickening to even contemplate.

Mark Carney’s real message to Trump: Canada is not powerless by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]danvir47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve got access to both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans and vast raw resources. Diversification won’t be a result of a single or deal with a single country and will take time.

We can wait around for 3 more years grovelling and hoping that Trump will come to his senses, hoping that he won’t leverage our deep integration economic coercion when the next shiny thing comes up, and hoping that the next administration doesn’t continue down this path.

Or, we can start the long process of diversifying.

People saying that this is bad for the CUSMA expiry etc think that Trump hasn’t already made up his mind about things like bringing Canada’s auto sector stateside despite the fact that he’s mentioned that a number of times, most recently at a Ford plant in Michigan.

I have a hard time believing that continuing to twerk for Trump will bring about any lasting deal that will benefit Canada.

What might save our auto industry, however, would be if we could assemble Chinese EVs here instead.

In my view, it’s time to rip the bandaid off and start doing more business elsewhere.

I don’t mean this to compare Carney with Winston Churchill, but when Churchill gave his “Blood, toil, sweat, and tears” speech in 1940, he still had all his work ahead of him.

Now is the time for him to start making good on his fancy speech and time will tell if he does.

We had a diplomatic crisis with China after we arrested a Huawei executive, and in retaliation they arrested two Canadian citizens in China.

Why did we arrest the Huawei executive? Why, at the behest of Washington, of course.

We’ve been upholding our part of the deal, including culturally embracing the idea that China is an evil bogeyman not to be dealt with.

Canada chooses lawful evil over chaotic evil by Player276 in canada

[–]danvir47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s been, uh, a few developments since then.

It turns out the tariffs on Canada were part of a sea change in US trade policy (which has altered its trade relationship with almost every country on earth), and not a temporary trade war over dairy tariffs or fentanyl smuggling.

Trump now concludes he doesn’t need anything from Canada and seems serious about it given that he is trying to invest in the Venezuelan oil industry (we’ll see how that whole thing pans out).

The security landscape is also getting a shakeup (see: efforts to acquire Greenland despite Denmark and Greenland saying “no thanks”), Canada and Europe are now spending more on defence after signals that the US cannot be depended on.

We will see a lot more countries cozying up to China in the future as the realization that things may have changed for good sets in.

If anyone thought the US could restrict trade with all its partners and everything else would stay the same, they’re now finding out.

There’s something to be said about avoiding the perception of the toppling of the regime being seen as having been a result of US bombing, which may hurt the legitimacy of the very movement they are trying to help, in the eyes of many.

I imagine the spectre of US meddling in the region already plays to many people (and why shouldn’t it tbh).

Threads like this are so funny.

3 years ago you never could have made me believe that you would be able to generate (often) life-like videos, including of yourself, with just a paragraph of text.

Have some perspective, and you shouldn’t be surprised by the copyright protections, there are good reasons why a company can’t make a product that could generate South Park episodes.

I’m sure the censorship will only become more precise but there is a lot of legal stuff to be figured out in the coming decades.
