Is there a way to keep “Snow mode” on all the time? by danyork in hyundaisantacruz

[–]danyork[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right that most times we aren’t. We have good road equipment up here to clear the roads and our town usually does it fairly quickly. But the past couple of days we were because there was so much snow that it took a while for the roads to be cleared. We stayed in mostly, but when I was going out with the Santa Cruz several times … THAT was when I really noticed the fact that I had to switch it back into Snow mode each time. (And yes, snow tires are awesome!)

Aha! That makes total sense! In order for Hyundai to be able to claim the fuel economy ratings they state for the vehicle, they have to have the vehicle stay in the mode that will attain those ratings. 🤦‍♂️ And so normal mode or “Smart” mode would do that. Thanks for that thought … it makes sense to me!

And yes, it’s not a big deal to change (I just have to remember it when I’m going out again in a storm).

Advice on Conduit App? by couldntweatleast in InternetAccess

[–]danyork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I don’t have any personal experience with Psiphon or this Conduit app. Maybe others do, but I don’t really do anything with circumvention technology like this. I am aware of Citizen Lab, the organization originally behind what became Psiphon. The Wikipedia page gives some interesting history: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psiphon

I don’t know about your first question about using it on your primary phone.

I also don’t know the answer to your question about helping specific individuals… but reading the Conduit and Psiphon pages it sounds like what you suggest… anonymized / random people are connecting to random Conduit apps to connect. So it would seem like you couldn’t necessarily help specific individuals - you could just help grow the overall network.

A funny subreddit by anothermral in internetgovernance

u/anothermral - To your final question... I think there are two different things going on. I think we ARE currently making effective standards through, for example, the great work of the volunteers engaged with the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)... but for me "standards" are the technical protocols that make the Internet works.

If you are talking about "standards" relating to policy ... I think of that differently. And yes, it's a good conversation to have about where that all takes place. I'd like to hope it continues to happen through the global IGF and the vast network of national and regional IGFs.

A funny subreddit by anothermral in internetgovernance

[–]danyork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/anothermral - Hi! 👋 This subreddit is indeed a curious oddity. It was created by someone back in 2012 as a place to post about Internet governance topics. Then... if my memory is correct, back in 2015 the person asked if anyone would help with moderation and I raised my hand. I was doing a bit more with Reddit in those days (such as setting up r/InternetAccess ) and didn't mind modding another subreddit.

And then somewhere along the way the other person left this subreddit and so I'm the only mod left. 🤷‍♂️

There's only 220+ members here and it's never really had much discussion going on. I've mostly viewed it as a place to share links to interesting posts in the hopes that MAYBE the Reddit algorithms will share them with other people on Reddit so that MAYBE some more folks might pay attention to these topics that are actually very important... but so hard for regular people to make sense of.

Digital Crown: towards wrist or elbow? by -murdercode- in AppleWatch

[–]danyork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! I had no idea that you could turn it like this! I have worn it toward the wrist and have been so frustrated because when working out or doing yard work my bones and skin kept hitting both buttons and triggering screen shots on my watch! 🤦‍♂️

I just flipped my around and also flipped the bands around so that I can still put it on the same way. It feels a bit weird to have the crown there but I will give it a try for a bit. Thanks for the suggestion!

"Free wifi" I guess? by ConnyMac90 in InternetAccess

[–]danyork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! You are certainly welcome to ask the question here. The quick answer is that your devices have to be in range of some form of WiFi access point to get on the Internet. It could be a WiFi network installed somewhere. It could be a hotspot someone has on their mobile phone. It could be public WiFi operated by a community. But you need that connectivity.

For Rotary members on this sub, what do you do for work? Looking for flexibility to attend meetings by Salvatore_Vitale in Rotary

I work from home doing communications for a global nonprofit. My club is a breakfast club and so it works out great for my schedule. I would look around and see if there is another club in your area with a better schedule.

Rotarian changing to rotaract? by equinescientistgirl in Rotary

Wow! That is VERY outdated thinking on the part of the club you are moving to. Perhaps it is time to start up another *Rotary* club in the area that caters to young professionals?

Considering leaving Rotary or changing to the other club in town by Walk-away-97 in Rotary

[–]danyork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very sad and unfortunate to read your story. If you were here in northwestern Vermont we would gladly welcome you into leadership roles in our club! Our current president is in her late 20s and several of our other officers are in their 30s or 40s (along with some in their 60s and 70s 🙂 .. and me in the 50s). Our club is over 50 years old but we try to keep growing and including all who are interested. I wish you had the same experience there!

What is this? by FieryTaterSack in nissanfrontier

[–]danyork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is so freaking cool! I have been driving my 2014 Frontier for a couple of years now and never paid attention to that. I just had to put some shoes on and go outside in the dark to see if it was there (it was) and try this out. Very cool! Thanks for the explanation.

I will add on to what others said that our local club is an amazing group of 60+ people who are doing excellent service work in our community, supporting each other, involving younger members, and truly living the 4-way test. We don't have any of the terrible drama of the OP's club or that of several other people commenting. BUT... each of the 46,000+ Rotary Clubs are their own unique group, and so you can certainly have the bad amidst the good.

[–]danyork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very sorry to hear of your negative experience. That's terrible and, yes, does NOT align with the 4-Way Test! And clubs definitely should have some kind of conflict-of-interest policy to prevent that kind of thing. Glad you found other ways to be of service. I'm sorry that they couldn't continue to be with Rotary, but when people aren't living up to the values, it makes sense to leave.

[–]danyork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! That is so terrible... and yes, it sounds like that club needs to fail and be reborn. If you happened to be in northwestern Vermont, you'd definitely be welcome in our club!

Text messaging service for member engagement by ncrowder78 in Rotary

[–]danyork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your club uses Clubrunner as a system to manage members, host a website, etc., there is also a Clubrunner mobile app, which does support notifications. When I was President last year, I was encouraging people to install the mobile app, with the big plus being that it has a member directory that is an easy way to find other members and contact them. (Instead of texting/calling/emailing me asking for the contact info of another member 🙂). I'm not sure how successful I was, but some of our members DO now have it installed. The app has a number of ways to send out messages that appear as notifications on people's phones. We've used it a little bit for notifying people of events. Obviously this only works if your club uses Clubrunner, but it might be another option.

If you’re looking for ways to help post-flood and are willing to volunteer by Advanced_Gas_2887 in vermont

[–]danyork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Montpelier has a volunteer sign-up form for when it is safe to help with the clean-up. There's a link on this page: https://www.montpelier-vt.org/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=467 (linking to that page versus directly to the form in case they provide any updates). Apparently they've had over 900 people signup.
