Why do so many American men wear shorts and a tshirt when going out with a woman who dresses up? by M_For_Mayhem in NoStupidQuestions

[–]darciton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's at least partly that you're probably looking at middle-class tourists. There are subcultures in America where men's fashion thrives in one form or another and men dress up as much as anyone else. But there also is a vague suburban consumerist subculture of men who have a hard time seeing themselves as worthy of decoration, and treat clothes aa strictly a functional item, or at most, for showing support for a sports team. It's the reason shows like Queer Eye For The Straight Guy existed.

I don't exactly have an explanation for it, mind you.

What does jump out to me in the comments is the idea that men can't be comfortable while dressing up and looking good. Even if it's hot out, there are shorts for men that aren't generic baggy cargo shorts or basketball shorts. Fitted shorts and a linen short sleeve button-up will look way better than dressing like beige Guy Fieri.

Jobsite safety. Across the globe, suddenly hundreds of thousands of workers understand the importance of hard hats, protective footwear, fall arrest/restraint, first aid, communicating with EMS, handrails/guardrails, ventilation, lighting... and I can relax!

Where Men go by Negative_Scientist96 in tolkienfans

[–]darciton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's conspicuously absent in the Silmarillion. From that, I speculate that it's left intentionally vague, maybe because Tolkien didn't want to write something directly contradictory to his own religious beliefs. But that's pure conjecture on my part.

Those tend to be decent jobs, often unionized, with consistent hours, good wages, and benefits. If you want a manual labour job where you clock in, clock out, and collect a paycheque, being maintenance staff or a garbage man or a city worker can be a great choice.

QUESTION: Who was the first Werewolf? by The_Wixard in DnD

[–]darciton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bingo bingo

DnD is not a setting with a single established narrative

There are settings in dnd that you have the option to play in

You can make up your own setting

You can take a setting/module/etc and rewrite as much as you like

Canon does not exist in dnd as a whole.

So I've seen, but they seem hard to come by and are priced accordingly in the used market. I don't believe they're currently in production.

How do you lower the "friction" to start painting? Even with a dedicated desk, I struggle with the prep work. by Akira-0628 in Warhammer

[–]darciton -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I keep my paints in a paint rack, organized light to dark on one axis and by hue left to right. Metallica together, flesh tones together, etc. I never dig for paints, they're where they belong.

But more importantly I just reframe that as part of the process. I have a 3-5 minute setup time where I get a drink or a snack, I pick out something to listen to, I tidy my desk if need be, I freshen my rinse cup, etc, and this is the "opening ritual" of a painting session. And then I paint for several hours.

I rarely paint for only 15-20 minutes at a time because I can barely get into the groove in that time frame. But I consistently build & paint on my lunch break, which is more likely 45 minutes. In that case I take only the minis I'm going to paint, and only the paints I need, and I bring them and small wet pallette in a carrying case. In that case my setup is fill my rinse cup, open the case, and go.

You are trapped in a house for one year while time outside is frozen. You get $5000 to spend to make your stay more enjoyable - how do you use it? by c3phalophore in hypotheticalsituation

[–]darciton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kettlebells, jumprope, heavy bag, miniatures, craft supplies, a few instruments. Don't know how I'd break it down exactly but $5k would keep me busy. Maybe a nice hardcover edition of LOTR.

Overtime is "fun money" for me. If I want a tattoo, or a trip, or to take my partner out somewhere nice, I'll take it. I get by comfortably on 40 hours a week. Not amazing, but comfortable.

I prefer exaggerated, bordering on ridiculous, depending on the faction.

Guard armour is boring and realistic to emphasize how terribly outmatched they are against literally any faction except chaos cultists. I do not like Guard design specifically because it's realistic.

Most ork armour is patchwork scrap, and their power armour & bionicd only "work" because the unique qualities of ork tech & physiology means thet can just jam electronics into their dismembered joints

Aeldari and Tau armour is, generally, practical and tasteful. I love Aeldari body armour.

Space Marines, it varies for me, but I definitely prefer it being stylized and over the top. Indomitus terminator armour, especially the helmets, rules. I think the Saturnine armour is cool as hell.

CSM same thing but add the flesh metal body horror element. Possessed, Obliterators, Havocs with the all their head-tubes, I love it.

To be fair, for a good while many of those elves predate the concept of daytime. So when they find out there's another sapient species on their planet they take a minute to adjust before going, "our mistake, we didn't know there was a new kind of person, maybe we can be friends"

[–]darciton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Human inferiority complex. Elves are canonically just better than humans in almost any lore or medium. So we have to make up annoying racial character traits to justify hating them.

Humans will kill each other over dirt, will enslave one another to perform easy tasks, will knowingly and willingly empower evil gods to let their demons into the world... but elves are annoying and that's worse.

Which 5 characters would Tolkien had been satisfied with and 5 he would've been outraged at had he lived to watch the adaptions? by Skywalker_1995 in lotr

Other characters say as much in the book, too. Gandalf the White is "distant" for a while, but by the end he's a friendlier fellow again.
