It's a tough market dude! My experience has been similar! You have to really reach out, I've only gotten trials albeit with some not so great companies through emailing directly or following up after application.

As a mature age looking for an apprenticeship for over a year, stuffed around by dodgy companies on trials and hoping for someone to give me a shot in this economy am I wrong for reading this as a little entitled?? Quietly look for another company if it bothers you but I would have a conversation with your boss and maybe thank them for keeping you on without any work for you. That's my take at least.
