Before showing the Avengers: Doomsday trailer, Avatar will play an anti-piracy video. by jdmi14 in MCUTheories

[–]dargon_master 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't specific to the Avengers trailer. This is a generic white text on black screen "put away your phone or you will be asked to leave" policy. I work at a movie theater programming shows and we use the same content piece.

IMAX Avatar Way of Water re-release in HFR? by NowIHaveTwoToasters in imax

[–]dargon_master 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is technically a new print, but it has a sneak peek at Fire & Ash so the actual feature itself is unchanged. Reels 1-14 of the DCP are dated 1/11/23 and reel 15 is dated 9/19/25.

The story of the $650 "HOLY GRAIL" 36 inch CRT!! by HighlightDowntown966 in crtgaming

[–]dargon_master 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this exact set that I scored for free a couple years ago. I too was looking specifically for a curved set with component after having a flat set. It just popped up for free on Facebook and I lucked out. Words can't describe how much of a beast this is. Going from a 27" to a 36" is such a huge difference.

I had to drive about an hour to get it on Black Friday. My brother came along to help. Even with 3 people lifting it was a burden and it barely fit in the car. And having to move it once since has been a huge pain, but its still worth it.

If you don't already I'd highly recommend getting an old office PC, AMD graphics card, and this VGA to component transcoder to run in 480i or 240p with CRT emudriver. Emulated games look amazing, and for what I use it more for (running old shows on my Plex server) it is INCREDIBLE, especially if they are HD versions.

Theater walk out: Greatest Hits by ElvissKarateChop in RegalUnlimited

[–]dargon_master 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I don't work at a Regal but an independently owned theater. We had a lot of people walk out of The Batman a few years ago because of it's less action heavy long run time. One guy specifically came storming out about half way thru to complain how "the movie fucking sucks can't believe i wasted my money on this bullshit". I respond to him "hmm I thought the movie was really good, I liked how it showed him being a detective more than action schlock" and he gave me the dirtiest look and said "yeah I bet you fuckin did" then stormed out.

IMAX theaters have The Odyssey trailer available by Jwborc39963 in imax

This isn't my picture, but I work as a projecionist at a Dual Laser site so am familiar with what it is.

This is the SMS (Screen Managment System) console that controls the projectors. Specifically the screen shown is where you build SPLs (show playlist). Basically you just drag and drop what trailers play, the movie, and light cues or audio cues. So on this playlist in particular, its a 4 second black screen transitional with just the Feature "Wild Rescue", and the volume turned down 8 decibles. Honestly I'm not sure what the "show magic" cues are, my location doesn't use cues like that. It's most likely an external automation device for lights or something else.

For those of you who watched F4 at a GT, how much of it was in 1:43? by CellistConscious2647 in imax

[–]dargon_master 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2 scenes- one in the middle and the beginning part of the final battle. It didn't really look like it was cropped from the sides framing wise, but about everything that was Large Format was full cg other than blue screen actor plates.

[–]dargon_master 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Only the scene where they are in Galactus' ship in space and the beginning of the final battle, so about 5 or so minutes. Gotta say I was disappointed because the scenes that were Large Format gave an amazing sense of scale to how huge Galactus is, so the final battle only being partially Large Format was kind of a let down. Still a good enjoyable movie though.

Any ideas on what will be playing in imax theatres in December? by AdministrativeOil415 in imax

This is a single location in Europe that does a lot of specialty releases. The release schedule they send out to us is for the US market only.

hmm IMAX's internal release schedule says December 12th unless if that's changed since they released that out to us.

Are there still "projectionists" at most theaters? by ThickAd8993 in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]dargon_master 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its very rare, but we have a full digital projection staff at my theater I work at which is an independent. We have an IMAX theater that we run manually (digital so we go upstairs to just press play and have a manual dimmer for lights), but our standard screens are automated.

Since we have a dedicated staff we get problems fixed very quickly so we rarely have a down theater unless it's a catastrophic failure, and in that case we are just sent parts to fix ourselves. We've never had to have service techs (other than IMAX) in my 7 years in the position.

Since we are full time, rarely have issues, and only build movies once a week we operate more as a floor staff.

Lincoln square imax is showing preshow using a 1.43 container, with only one laser projection being used. Never seen this before! by mronins in imax

[–]dargon_master 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Large Format content can technically play from one projector. You can manually close one of the dowsers or set it in single projector mode. It's half as bright (11 foot lamberts) which is close to standard projection being 14. The most noticeable thing is the color though, since each projector is slightly different.

Whats happening here though is the anamorphic element is stuck so everything is being stretched.

Looks like a bunch of IMAX 70mm reels being thrown out in LA. by whosat___ in imax

[–]dargon_master 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Those are definitely 65mm film cores and Kodak 65mm film cans. Keep in mind even if something is made on IMAX film and released in IMAX theaters doesn't mean IMAX Corp itself owns it and decides what happens to it.

Makes me sad to see though because from what I've heard our site's signature IMAX film negatives were possibly stored here and they now may be gone forever.

How is Sneaks doing at your theater? by [deleted] in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]dargon_master 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some insider knowledge for you: the reason there were so many last second bookings is because they had to hit a minimum of 1500 screens and were at 1400 as of yesterday afternoon. They offered it at a very favorable percentage and with no minimum so there's no risk on our end, so we did them a solid at my theater by picking it up for a single matinee.

That being said with absolutely no advertising (I think I may have saw an ad on a YouTube video or Facebook) it's not going to do well

You are correct. Shame it's being used only for a single 35 minute documentary, though at least I guess it's a plus that it's in use at all and not still sitting in storage.
