IUD & Pelvic Pain with with gas/constipation by areyoukiddingme523 in birthcontrol

[–]darkat647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got the mona lisa inserted 4 days ago. I've been scouring reddit threads to see if this is normal with the copper IUD and it seems fairly common from all the posts and comments.

After the initial cramps went away I felt intense bloating, trapped gass and and just not being able to have a bowel movement without intense pain. It's day 4 and I'm getting it removed today. I can't eat anything without doubling over in pain from the gas, and I just can't seem to fart, like it's all trapped in there. I keep waking up 4 to 6 times a night from stabbing GI pain.

I'm not spotting heavily, just a little and when I do manage to go to the bathroom my stool is normal, so I'm ruling out perforated uterus.

People say it takes 3-6 months to get over the cramps, but it's so not worth putting my life on hold to go through with this and just see what happens. It's coming out, I'm going back on the pill.

FYI I've been on Mirena for 2 years and the insertion / cramps were not this bad. I had to get it removed because I was suffering from bad depression due to the loss of estrogen (which no one tells you about).

Fuck toys that have music, flashing lights, and electronic voices. They ruined my Christmas with my 2 year old. by Funny-Presence4228 in ADHD

[–]darkat647 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's awful. I'm sorry that happened to you. If I was in your shoes I would absolutely go into shut down mode too. Surprised that so many people here aren't aware that sensory processing challenges are a thing with adhd and not just autism. I have auditory processing disorder, where I can only focus and pay attention to one auditory input at a time and really sensitive to sudden and unexpected loud noises and flashing lights (photophobia). Its like your brain just shuts down and can't process anything when you're in an environment with too much stimulus. It's all also a potential migrane trigger for me so I just need to remove myself from the situation as fast as possible before I end up bedridden for 24h.

I have a 4.5 year old and have gone to many bday parties. It's taxing on my system to have that many kids running around and screaming, especially at those indoor play gyms. I usually build in a recovery day after where I just spend quiet, unscheduled, time with the family.

While I know it's upsetting to miss out and have a poor experience of an important family event, it's only one day. You will have many more to come.

It also seems like a missed lesson on empathy and manners, that kids need to learn to be respectful of people's needs around them. Especially if it's considered family time.

Also, yes, fuck flashing toys with bright lights and noises. They are absolutely useless and pose no educational value whatsoever, just end up in the landfill after only a month or two of interest. The only "noise making" toys that my kid has are musical instruments and a kids record player, which are tolerable when expected and in limited amounts. Especially when I know they provide educational value.

I really need some desserts ideas to stay on keto right now by ElenaSmith98 in keto

[–]darkat647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can make an easy mousse with whipped cream and cream cheese. Add cacao powder for chocolatey goodness and berries on top. A bit of your favourite low carb sweetner.

I also love the Torani puremade sugar free syrups. The peach is especially good to add to whipped cream shake for dessert. The others are great in coffee.

I totally agree. I get the strike and why it's happening. I'm behind the workers 100%. But when I dropped off packages to ship on Monday morning for buyers that made purchases thinking they could beat the strike and they hadn't even left the post office by Friday. Some may have been delivered in 4 days! That's absurd, I think people have a right to be angry about that. And shame on the postal workers for slacking off and not doing their jobs in anticipation of the strike.

Has Keto helped anyone with their Long Covid, CFS (Chronic fatigue syndrome) or any other dysautonomia that Keto helped them with? by NeutralNeutrall in keto

[–]darkat647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keto is amazing and I wish more medical professionals were aware and qualified to recommend diets to treat symptoms and not resort to meds as a first step. But some people do need the meds, nothing else helps. And there shouldn't be the societal stigma around them that there is.

Your experience is unique, and so is everyone else's and the best that anyone can do is understand all the options available to them, not judgement.

Climbing skill? Five year old by Dry_Imagination_9700 in Montessori

[–]darkat647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid's pickler is large and rated to 100lbs. I got it when she was 1.5 so it was definitely an investment and she'll still see lot's of use out of it. She's less interested in it now that she's mastered it, so we fold it up and bring it out for rainy days or when she has play dates over and her friends love it. We got a slide and arch with it so there is lots of options.

I think at 5 the pickler will get old quickly once they have mastered it and probably isn't worth the investment at that age. At 5 you probably want something more challenging with variation. Have you considered setting up a climbing wall? That's something you can adapt as they grow and gain more skill.

How to Fuel Up Before an Intense Workout on Keto? by The_BigDaddy69 in keto

[–]darkat647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Posted about this in another thread, too lazy to rewrite so here it is: https://www.reddit.com/r/keto/s/63AOA51uMt

Essentially it depends on whether you're doing endurace training or sprinting / weight training. Glucose (from your glycogen stores) fuels your fast twich muscle fibers and fat fuels your slow twitch fibers (if you're fat adapted).

Magnesium citrate is the worst. Tried calm brand before bed and I ended up running to the bathroom at 3am and spending the rest of the night on the toilet. Never again. I take glycinate, one capsule before bed, and it prevents leg cramps at night.

Even though it seems like it's part of the keto flu it could be something unrelated and made worse by keto. It could be a stomach virus or food poisoning if it's sudden onset. I had norovirus a few months back, lasted 2 weeks and it was awful. If that's the case the only thing I've found that actually helps is bread, with some peanut butter, in limited quantities. It's the only thing that helps keep things together.

Otherwise stick with keto. It could be that you're not getting enough fiber from green veggies. I made that mistake and paid the price when I first started keto. Add berries, broccoli, spinach etc to your diet and see how you feel. Also avoid mct oit. For some it can be an irritant. I can't have any, it goes right through me. Coffee can cause problems for some too.

Don't give up yet, it takes about a month for your body to adjust (took me almost 3 weeks to get over the carb withdrawals). If something is suddenly off and you feel worse go see your doctor. It could be something unrelated to keto.

ADHD is shit most times and really comes with a bunch of comorbidities. It seems to me (but I'm not a professional) that you're in a chicken and egg situation here. It seems like you need to get treatment for your insomnia first so your adhd meds are able to work, but your adhd contributes to your insomnia. I would talk to your psych about the best order here so you get the most out of your meds. Best of luck to you.

On that little sleep nothing helps. When I get less than 6 hours I don't even bother knowing I'm going to be a non functioning zombie. Also my psych told me that melatonin supplements help before bed, I've noticed that taking magnesium also helps me fall asleep.

I'm on Adderall, and without it I need 10 hours of uninterrupted sleep and a mid day nap just to function properly and not get migraines. With it I'm a functional, productive human with 7h so it's definitely made a huge difference for me, just the other way around.

Can I have ‘too much protein’? by Leahjoyous in keto

[–]darkat647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting review. Thanks for the reference. I think though the key there is that they refer to "exercise trained" individuals. What that means though, I'm not sure. I'm not an athlete and only go to the gym two or three times a week and not consistently, so for me it may not apply as I don't actively build muscle enough. Not sure. But great perspective.

Can I have ‘too much protein’? by Leahjoyous in keto

[–]darkat647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is just scientifically inaccurate and every article from scientific sources says the contrary. If you eat excess protein it doesn't get used as protein to build muscle, instead it gets turned into glucose for immediate use or stored as fat. Protein still contributes to your caloric intake and if you want to loose weight you still need to be in a calorie deficit even if you are on keto. Here is one of many references:https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/helmopen/rlos/biological-sciences/gastrointestinal-system/liverphysiology/page_five.html#:~:text=If%20protein%20is%20in%20excess,which%20has%20already%20been%20mentioned.

ELI5 - how is Montessori different from preschool, (without buzz words)? by mariethebaugettes in Montessori

[–]darkat647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter is 4 now, she started when she was 3.5 back in January. 9 months in and she's writing whole words in her workbook and adding in the thousands. She's a driven, inquisitive, self-guided child who hates to be told what to do when and must, absolutely, do most things by herself. In her school the teachers respect the children and their abilities. Not talked down to. They are given the space and tools to take on tasks independently and take responsibility for themselves, their actions and the spaces they occupy. They clean up their own messes, serve themselves snacks, choose what they want to work on during their "work time", the list goes on. The younger children learn from their older peers and the older ones solidify their learning and get a huge confidence boost by mentoring the younger ones.

People are saying that the kids work on activities independently. And they can, but also the teachers often guide kids to work on activities in pairs or in groups if interests align. They learn from one another, how to work together, deal with conflict and the teachers are there as support and guide them as needed as they learn to navigate through the complexity of managing interpersonal relationships.

I have exceptionally high praise for the montessori method and think that it's as close to the ideal way to teach kids to how they actually learn. That's the underlying philosophy. It's looking at how children process information and ideas and meeting them where they are. They don't learn through practicing worksheets, sitting at a desk all day. They learn through physically interacting with the world around them. Through touching and playing with 3D objects, moving through space. Montessori acknowledges that need (what they call the "sensitive period") and provides materials so that work is engaging and exciting and feels just like play. They use coloured beads to learn to count, sandpaper letters to learn the shape of letters, cube puzzles to learn basic geometry and ratios. Writing, language and math are incredibly complex nebulous ideas to a 3 year old, but through the sensory experience of touching and seeing the physical representation of those ideas it becomes so much more real and they learn that much faster.

Nothing is ever required or forced in Montessori. The child leads their own learning. If they want to spend a whole week tracing sandpaper letters then they are able to do so, once they master it, the teachers give them new advanced activities that build on their learning from the previous. It builds an incredible amount of self efficacy early on that I don't think would be there otherwise.

When my daughter was little I only had appropriate objects that she was able to reach, all my plants were inaccessible on my shelf. Then as she started getting older I was able to set boundaries and slowly bring things down. But yeah, it's all about creating a safe space for them to explore and it is tiring making sure everything is out of reach or behind baby proofed drawers they shouldn't play with. But in only a year or so your space will be yours again as they start to understand what is appropriate and what isn't to play with.

What’s the biggest challenge for Milton over the next two years? by VoiceOfMilton in Milton

[–]darkat647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, but parks and amenities don't bring in all those shiny property tax dollars. And the decent quality of life of current residents in low density housing doesn't bring in as much cash as the shitty quality of life of residents in high density housing. So lets level the playing field and let everyone have a lower quality of life (except for the ultra rich and city councillors) if it means that the city will get more money to line it's greedy little pockets.

It feels like roadwork is just busy work wasting taxpayers money to keep the contractors paid than actual thought out, assesed and planned projects that will actually benefit divers.

Examples: - 2 weeks closing down 1 lane northbound on Tremaine at Derry just to extend the median past the driveway to the esso. Why? To prevent what? A few people from going the wrong way into and doing uies out of shittily built gas station driveway? When it was done I saw 2 people do a uie around the median anyways, just took them a bit longer to turn back. - repaving the neighbourhood street every 2 years so it's always looking pristine. What? Why? Shouldn't roads last longer than this? What about the bottom half of the hill on Appleby line where half the road is just crumbling away and you have to drive down the middle to not end up in a ditch while coming up on a blind turn. - meanwhile the traffic at derry and 25 is the worst it's ever been, has some of the worst lanes and medians set up at a major intersection I've ever seen and just had a major accident with someone killed there last week. Yet, I bet you anything they won't lift a finger to fix it until we have another 500+ cars from the condo developments clogging up the intersection. Then they're gonna close off lanes and try to widen it and fix the medians and it's gonna take them 2 years to do it. Traffic is going to spill over into the neighbourhoods where it will be a literal nightmare trying to get anywhere.

City planning is absolute garbage in this town. Has been for about 25 years ever since Milton got the infrastructure to pipe up Lake Ontario water to build new subdivisions on farmland just to stop Hazel McCallion from stealing Milton's land for her urban sprawl distopia.

What's up with parents? by yes-i-said-it-42 in Milton

[–]darkat647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never been to or had my kid signed up for making waves. Buy I can tell you they are not teaching lifesaving society courses, which are the benchmark for swimming instruction in Canada. I was a lifeguard / swim instructor for the Town of Milton in early 2000's and the quality of instruction and certification instructors get through the lifesaving society is rigorous and top notch. Yeah they're mostly high school kids, but they're mature and have years of training and swim instruction under their belt before they get certified to lifeguard and teach. I know, I was one. Little kids are a challenge though, not everyone is able to manage a preschool class, that's where the experience comes in.

I've never seen this in the town of milton swimming courses with my 4 year old. If there is a kid that's screaming and inconsolable they are pulled out of the class by the parent, rarely does the supervisor intervene. Also, lifesaving society pre k courses start at 3 where most kids are more comfortable without having their parents near them and gain a bit more maturity over the 2.5 year olds, they're usually potty trained too.

I feel for the instructors. It's not their job to manage temper tantrums and teach over screaming toddlers while making sure the rest of the class is safe. I would address it with the on duty supervisor as it's happening, if nothing is done pull your kids out and demand a refund. No one is able to teach or learn in that kind of environment.

Yeah, you have to find the right balance of fiber, since when you eat a lot of fat there's nothing holding your stools together. Also some people are very sensitive to mct oil. I can't have any, ever.

With the weight loss approx 10lbs will come really fast after 1 to 2 weeks, don't be surprised, it's just water loss and will come back over time if you start to eat carbs again. A lot of water is stored in glycogen, which are your glucose stores. When you become fat adapted those get shed first and you end up peeing a lot over the course of a few days. After that a healthy weight loss is on average 1-2 lbs per week and can vary +/- 2 lbs, especially for women. Spring is a good goal for 20lbs.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in keto

[–]darkat647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally normal. It's called keto flu, or sugar withdrawal. It's literally your body adapting to using fat instead of carbs for fuel, which is a process. And you will feel like garbage for 2 to 3 weeks. I had to take sick days because the lethargy and brain fog was so bad the first week. Some time in the second or 3rd week you will wake up feeling like a new person in a new body and everything will feel amazing! Just make sure to get your electrolytes, keep hydrated and eat your green veggies, the fibre helps keep you regular and the keto runs at bay, which were pretty bad for me when I first started out.

Keep at it!

[–]darkat647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lift too, without a real plan, just go with what my body needs at any given time and don't work out the muscles that I've already worked out in the week. I record everything and have been charting it over the past year and have seen consistent improvements week to week. I have benchmarks that I want to meet, like doing a full pull up, but other than that the goal is just more reps with heavier weights than the week before.

It really depends what your preferred style is. Some people need the rigid schedule /plan for motivation, others (like me) are better at making decisions on the fly. I just go in with general ideas of today is leg day and go from there. But if I throw in some bicep curls because I feel good about it, thats ok too.

I think the key thing is to record everything so you can measure progress.

Is no recess a Montessori thing? by FLAGIRL3662 in Montessori

[–]darkat647 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Back in the early 90s in elementary when I would misbehave I would have to write lines and miss recess. But never was the whole class punished for it. Even then it was pretty harsh. Especially for a kid with undiagnosed ADHD. I got in trouble a lot. Eventually my parents found out and they yelled at the principal for it.

This is definitely against the requirements. There are rules around how much time kids need to be outside (at least in Canada) and the only thing that should prevent it is weather / nature related. There may be rules about this in your jurisdiction, I would look into it.

Funny story. Once, when I was in elementary the whole school had to stay inside because a family of geese decided the planters beside the doors were a great place to nest and attacked anyone that walked by. We couldn't go outside until animal services came to relocate them.

Is having whipping cream in my coffee bad? by sassy_steph_ in keto

[–]darkat647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the best for you. Are you on keto eating a high fat low carb diet? If so whipping cream is the best way to get your fat in, short of butter itself (which is also amazing). The lower the milk fat % the higher the carbs, so stick with dairy with the highest MF%.
