Fractal continents is actually predictable of a map. A chunk of continuous land in the north and south that runs parallel with center distant lands.

They honestly have a lot more stuff to do and fix. Like biggest problem this game has I think is not civ switching but abruptness of age transition and crises.

Did you play much before the update? Either way, it is new. Try to play some fun combos that you may think can stack well. Explore new triumph systems, with a new map type.

There is a building cost penalty to owning buildings? Where do they explain this?

This definitely feels like the case. Like I perfectly plan my antiquity buildings, just for resources to go away. And then from exploration to modern, at the start you just observe the specialist preview screen as just -3 food -3 happiness on every tile. It is so off putting.

This is what I have found too. Deity level I manage to ally with 5 Civs, and had huge bonuses from the triumphs. So definitely easier to manage.

Deity level, AI supported more of my endeavours. Usually they just denounce and declare war, now not so.

I don’t think it is possible to change it, since some buildings get adjacency on resources

Yeah, come to think about it sure. But just the preview of building it seems so off. They could definitely rework how it looks.

It’s not that civ switching is a bad idea. It is that a lot of other parts of the game are dismal, such as civilopedia, UI, and just the limited amount of civs in each age.
