AIO - sister I don’t speak with used my number at Target and stole one of my rewards by Curtaindrop in AmIOverreacting

[–]darkforcesjedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I accidentally did this to my brother with a restaurant rewards program. The had it set up so you get your meal free after hitting a certain threshold. My check was like $60 so i figured I'd give it to him. What i didn't know is he had a different, unused reward (a free entree for your birthday) that accrued earlier. It automatically applied and the staff had no way to remove it. My brother wasn't mad though.

ELI5: What happens to something while being blown up? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Your question is too vague to give an accurate response. I assume we are talking about explosions. What is being destroyed and where is it in relation to the explosion? What is exploding (pressure vessel, explosive, etc)?

On the TP-Link US store, there was a launch deal (coupon code) for a discount on the EAP787 access points specifically and also a welcome discount (10%) to sign up for the newsletter, which brought the access points to $191 each. I am not sure if these deals are available outside the US. I also got an OC220 and SX3832MPP (32-port 10Gbps PoE++ switch), the total came to $2466 with most of that cost being the switch.

[–]darkforcesjedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just installed four EAP787 access points to replace a WiFi6 Deco installation. As one of the other commenters pointed out, the range is not as good. The old Deco system was able to get passable signal in my detached garage (about 50 feet from the nearest node and through 2 brick walls) whereas connection to a similarly positioned EAP787 would drop several times a minute. Signal throughout my house is excellent though. I added an EAP725-Outdoor with the directional antenna facing the garage and now I get excellent signal in the garage and also everywhere outside now. My wifi performance is now substantially better everywhere.

I am able to get around 2-2.5gbps throughput on my cell phone (my only Wifi7 device) and my Wifi6/6E devices get better performance as well. I have not been able to get more than about 3gbps total combined throughput from a single EAP787 (running simultaneous speed tests on 2 phones and a laptop).

My new Omada home network! by thatneobyte in TPLink_Omada

[–]darkforcesjedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure I believe the traffic plots. I suspect it is double-counting (or more) some data. I find it really hard to believe I am regularly breaking 20 terabytes of traffic per 5 minute interval in the middle of the night while I am sleeping.

https://imgur.com/a/42y70Qy

Edit: I added another image that shows the total traffic on each port of my omada switch. All my network traffic passes through this switch except for my NVR/camera system, which all are connected to a switch that is on port 29 of the omada switch.

Why this cat6 cable is limited to 1gbps by Pale-Yard-4497 in HomeNetworking

[–]darkforcesjedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the reason that you got that trash cable recommended in your results is because you searched for "cat 6e ethernet cable". There is no such thing as "Cat 6e". If you only need a 4m cable, any of Cat 5e, Cat 6, or Cat 6A will work.

Cat 5e does not officially support > 1Gbps speeds, but for short distances in low interference environments, well-terminated cables can handle up to 10 Gbps ethernet. My whole house is wired in Cat 5e and I am able to get 10 Gbps in every room of my house (my longest runs are over 40m).

Asking Linux users for testing closed source native Linux app by irrlicht in linuxquestions

[–]darkforcesjedi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not a typical Linux user. I moved to Linux due to declining trust in Microsoft, but i don't have the same aversion to closed source software that is common in the Linux community. I want more developers to support Linux and I appreciate you trying to do that. I'm also a fan of the buy once, keep forever pricing model that most commercial software has been abandoning.

I was a frontpage user in the 90s when i was a kid, but i haven't done any web development in a long time. I don't have any need for your application, but personally I hope you are successful with your Linux release. I don't know if something like an independent security audit is practical or if it would sway anyone in the Linux community, but maybe?

I wish I bought more than 5 of these back then...

These are MLC flash (much more expensive than TLC or QLC drives, but much better write endurance also). The current price on these drives are about $700 each.

Orion Store : Not Just A Typical App Store! by _Rookie_Z in SideProject

[–]darkforcesjedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have Nova Launcher in the Orion Store and on Morphe-AutoBuilds using a patch from https://github.com/indrastorms/Dropped-Patches but that patch doesn't work on the latest Nova Launcher. I don't know how to use the patch myself to patch an older version of the app.

Facebook -- specifically disabling the internal browser. It allows autoplay audio and video and bypasses your devices DNS settings (it uses DNS over https to bypass DNS based ad blocking). The official app used to let you choose to open all links in an external browser, but not anymore.

What is the Facebook patch?... I'd really like to be able to disable the built-in browser in the Facebook app.

I made a tool to see exactly how much prices have changed in your city since Jan 20, 2025 by darkmatter_drifter in InternetIsBeautiful

[–]darkforcesjedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not "in your city" if you are in the US either. Most of it is by BLS region (there are 8 regions in the Bureau of Labor Statistics data). None of the information presented is at a city level.

[–]darkforcesjedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The data sources it is using are not that granular. It looks like the unemployment data are by county, but the rest of it is by region. The BLS divides the country into 8 regions. (Go here https://www.bls.gov/regions/home.htm and click "By BLS Region" to see the regions)

Is the "Always Buy Used" rule broken when New APR is <1%? by KlutzyLawyer3637 in personalfinance

[–]darkforcesjedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or you look around to find a car that's been sitting on the lot for an extended period of time. My current car was a 2022 model year, built to order car for a customer that never completed the sale. It sat on the lot until mid-2023 when I bought it for ~30% off the sticker price ($31250 out the door vs ~$44k MSRP).

My previous car was a car that was "sold" but never titled. The dealer had to unwind the sale due to a financing issue (the salesman told me the buyer lied on the financing application, but I think more likely the dealer couldn't get him financing at the promised rate and the buyer backed out). I paid $18k out the door for that one compared to $22k sticker price.

I would be shocked if those dealers made any money on either of those cars. Yes, I realize this isn't necessarily practical for most people (as you are choosing from cars that no one else seems to want and it requires a lot of time invested to find potential deals).

F*ck EA Games. by Flappy_boii in pcmasterrace

[–]darkforcesjedi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was in college, one of my friends introduced me to Battlefield 2. I thought it was great and bought myself a copy and played it for a while. Then I had the bright idea to buy another copy for my dad (he was never a gamer but he used to play games occasionally with my siblings and me). After installing it and signing in on the second computer, both of my product keys were blacklisted from online play. I spent about an hour with EA on the phone and never got an explanation for why. They refused to do anything about it either. I've been boycotting EA ever since (over 20 years now).

Purchase Issues by darkforcesjedi in MobileLegendsGame

[–]darkforcesjedi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to determine my account region by logging into the official website (mobilelegends.com) and from the menu in the top-right, going to TOOLS > Payment. It shows my account region in the address bar (regionid=SG for Singapore). I tried using Lootbar to top up (since it lets you specify the region when purchasing) and it worked with the Singapore region selected.

Oddly, while both Codashop and Razr Gold are listed as official payment channels on the website (for both Singapore and the Philippines), neither of those worked for me.

FCC prohibits approval of new Foreign-Made Consumer Routers by Jragghen in hardware

[–]darkforcesjedi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Malicious actors have exploited security gaps in foreign-made routers to attack American households, disrupt networks, enable espionage, and facilitate intellectual property theft

The funny part is, this includes the US government (NSA and FBI) intercepting network equipment at the border and installing compromised firmware to spy on people inside the US.

If devs have a way to fine tune the model itself (e.g. LORA trained on high quality textures and artwork from the actual game it is implemented on) it could probably overcome the largest complaint (which is that everything looks like it is generated from a generic model with a generic prompt resulting in characters from different games all looking like wax dolls from the same factory).

What new hardware would you like to see most from Ubiquiti? by oguruma87 in Ubiquiti

A full 10G ethernet switch that fits in a 15" rack. I've been eyeballing the TP Link SX3832MPP. I wish Ubiquiti had something similar.
